Big highs and big lows.

Riding the roller-coaster Wednesday night, the Coupeville High School JV volleyball squad was ultimately edged in a thriller at Darrington.

The 15-25, 25-22, 25-15 non-conference loss busted a two-match win streak for the young Wolves, dropping them to 2-3.

They return to action immediately, as Chimacum comes to Whidbey for a match Thursday afternoon, with the JV tipping first at 4:30 PM.

Despite putting up strong stats as a team (12 service aces and 15 kills), Coupeville had a bit too many dips to put the match away.

“When we were hot, we were hot, but when we got cold … something to learn from,” said Wolf JV coach Heidi Wyman.

Ashley Menges paced the Wolves with 12 assists, while Maggie Crimmins racked up four kills at the net.

“As Maggie gets more confident, she is really starting to shine,” Wyman said.

One area where the Wolves were dead-on was at the service stripe, where almost every player powered through with impressive touch.

Allison (Wenzel), Kameryn (St Onge), Maddy (Hilkey), Ashley, Kenzi (LaRue) and Sarah (Wright) each had one perfect serving game,” Wyman said. “Kameryn actually had two.”

Speed kills.

Playing quickly and efficiently, the Coupeville High School JV volleyball squad whipped visiting Orcas Island so fast Friday night they still had time to be fans.

Playing in one gym while the Wolf varsity played in another, the young guns dismantled the Vikings 25-8, 25-16, 25-22, then jumped across the hall to scream and holler.

“They finished Orcas quick enough to cheer on the varsity!,” said Wolf JV coach Heidi Wyman. “It’s great to be part of a team and a town that supports each other so well.

“These young ladies are loud on the bench, pick each other up when they get down, and celebrate each other’s successes selflessly,” she added. “It’s scary when you get that kind of chemistry. It’s gonna be an awesome season!”

The win, coming after a 10-day layoff, was the second straight for the JV squad, lifting them to 2-2 on the still-young season.

They did it with a mix of precision serving (25 aces) and big hitting (15 kills).

“Offensively aggressive all night!,” said a proud coach.

Freshman phenom Maddy Hilkey captured player of the game honors with 14 serving aces and four kills.

“She passes any ball that comes her way with grace and accuracy,” Wyman said.

Also soaring high were the deadly duo of Kameryn St Onge, who rattled home six kills, and Nicole Lester, who led the Wolves with an 89% success rate at the service stripe.

Kameryn is deadly whenever she gets a chance to attack the ball,” Wyman said. “Having a left-handed setter that can sky the way she does is just awesome to watch.

Nicole is so great,” she added. “When the team needs someone to put a serve in, she finds a way to make it happen.”

Maddy Hilkey

No volleyball can escape Maddy Hilkey’s reach.

“I am very proud of how this team is working together, supporting each other and progressing!”

Two matches into her new role as Coupeville High School JV volleyball coach, Heidi Wyman is all aglow with the possibilities.

“They are a fantastic group of girls with a ton of heart and a blast to coach!,” she said after riding the ferry back from Friday Harbor Thursday night.

Playing second on the night, the JV squad waged an epic war with their hosts, dropping the first two sets by a sliver at 25-19 and 32-30, before roaring back to shred the Wolverines 25-7 in the final set of the evening.

“They did amazing!,” said Wyman, who hailed Kameryn St Onge for a “breakout performance” in which she “dominated both at the net and serving.”

St Onge ripped off six straight successful serves during the third set, including two aces.

Two of her teammates earned praise, as well, with Sarah Wright “a beast behind the service line,” en route to launching nine service aces in one set and Maddy Hilkey logging the first “perfect 3.0” passing set of the season for the JV.

Bandaged hand or not, Lauren Grove (John Fisken photos)

Bear Grylls would love Lauren Grove.

Just like the “Man vs. Wild” star, the Coupeville High School sophomore is a gritty survivalist who never shies from a challenge.

Despite battling an injured thumb that she aggravated again early in Tuesday night’s match at Klahowya, Grove stayed on the floor and rallied her Wolf JV squad time and again against the more experienced Eagles.

With several varsity players dotting their roster, to cover for ineligible JV players, the hosts eventually squeaked out a 25-20, 25-13, 25-11 win.

But it wasn’t because Grove took any plays off.

“I wrapped it (the thumb) more than normal, but she still struggled through the night,” said CHS coach Amy King. “She, of course, still moved well and talked on the floor and bench the entire night, still proving to be a leader for the team.”

Both teams started the match slowly, with trouble behind the service stripe haunting Coupeville early.

Down 22-9, the Wolves could have let the last few points slip away and moved on to the second set, but, instead, got chippy, charging back and almost claiming victory.

Katrina McGranahan started the comeback by spraying aces to every part of the court, before Maggie Crimmins continued the resurgence at the service stripe, using her “close to the net bullet shot” serves to pepper Klahowya.

With the dandy duo keeping the Eagles jumpy, Kameryn St Onge claimed the net as her own.

Jumping out of her shoes, the Wolf freshman laid down a string of precision tips and blistering kills as Coupeville capped a 10-1 rally, pulling within 23-19.

Things stalled out a bit after that, however, and Klahowya began to take advantage of its height — especially the height that came in the form of varsity players.

“We found ourselves across from a pretty tall front row player who worked with their setter to hit short set after short set after short set, which we just couldn’t defend even 90% of the time,” King said.

Still, the hustle and grit of her players impressed the Wolf coach.

“Along with our starting group, we also got solid playing from Kenzie (Valko), Kayla Rose, Abby (Parker), Claire (Mietus), Maggie, Sophia (Hassapis),” King said. “I love watching the way these girls have improved since that first week of the season, performing skills that they did not have back then.”

McGranahan paced the Woves, hitting on nine serves with two aces, while Payton Aparicio (8/1) and Crimmins (6/2) were also effective.

St Onge delivered a team-high four kills, McGranahan filled the stat sheet up (nine hits, two kills and a block) and Hope Lodell popped up everywhere, chipping in with two hits and three kills.

The match ended the only way it could — with a bang.

Rising off the floor in unison, Wolf teammates Katrina McGranahan and Lauren Grove teamed up to emphatically stuff a would-be spike from Bellevue Christian, sending the ball skidding off the floor and their teammates jumping into each others arms.

The 25-15, 25-22, 15-13 win Tuesday over the visiting Vikings lifted the Coupeville High School JV spikers to 2-2 and left coach Amy King sporting a smile.

And why not? Her squad played inspired ball for much of the match, controlling play and pulling off several superb plays.

While the joint stuff at the end rattled the building, the final point of the first set was probably even more beautiful.

Allison Wenzel, sliding across the floor, sliced a service return that skidded across the net, tiptoed through three Vikings and caught the very last flake of paint on the sideline for a winner that got the biggest roar of the night from the crowd.

It capped a first set that started as a runaway (the Wolves jumped out to an 18-4 lead behind precision serving from Payton Aparicio and McGranahan and back-to-back gorgeous, point-winning tips off the fingertips of Kameryn St Onge), turned a bit sticky, then got back on track.

Holding things together was Grove, who calmly directed traffic, at least when she was on her feet.

Willing to sacrifice her body for the good of the team, she frequently risked life and limb chasing balls, usually saving even the ones dead set on getting away.

The next two sets played out remarkably similar for the Wolves.

They jumped on Bellevue quickly, let up a bit, then put the other foot down. Hard.

The second set opened with Maggie Crimmins dropping in a string of winners on serve, before McGranahan unleashed a spike that seemed to be flying out of bounds, only to catch the very back corner of the court at the last second.

As the linesman jumped and waved like a madman, unable to fully believe the miracle he had witnessed, the last ounce of strength crumbled  from the Vikings.

Bellevue briefly rallied, but Aparicio was lights-out at the service stripe, denying that dream.

From there, Coupeville cruised home with the win, getting several big-time plays in the final set.

Grove won a frantic tip-fest at the net in which both sides ricocheted the ball back-and-forth for several moments before the Wolf sophomore deposited a winner just out of reach of her counterparts.

St Onge, becoming ever more confident with her power game as the season rolls on, once again hit on back-to-back winners, Hope Lodell was everywhere at once, slicin’ ‘n dicin’ as only “The Surgeon” can, and all that was left for Bellevue’s JV to do was decide what snacks they would buy at the concession stand post-match.

Cause, otherwise, they were done.
