Cold bats, hot bats

It was a Jekyll and Hyde kind of day.

Playing a Saturday afternoon doubleheader under sunny prairie skies, the Coupeville High School baseball team emerged with a split against visiting Forks, with the Wolves saving all their offense for the nightcap.

From being no-hit in an 8-0 loss to the Spartans, CHS bounced back to rip eight base knocks in the finale en route to a more-satisfying 12-4 win.

With the split against a non-conference rival, the Wolves get to 6-8 on the season and have won six of their last eight after opening the season on a six-game losing skid.

How the day played out:

 

Game #1:

Wolf pitchers Coop Cooper (9) and Carson Grove (5) combined to tally 14 strikeouts in the opener, but Coupeville only got three runners on base, making life difficult.

Jayden Little walked, while Camden Glover and Trent Thule each reached on an error, but all three happened in different innings, and the mini rallies went nowhere.

Meanwhile, Forks took advantage of four CHS errors, plating three runners in the first, two more in the fifth, and a final three-run burst in the seventh.

Game #2:

A completely different experience, as Coupeville, playing as the road team in this one, jumped on the Spartans from the first pitch.

Landon Roberts eked out a leadoff walk, then came around to score on an RBI double off the bat of Grove, and suddenly the offense was clicking in a completely different manner.

The Wolves poured it on in the top of the first, sending six runners across the plate, with Glover, Thule, and Leo Rodriguez picking up RBIs before Roberts closed things with a sharply hit two-run single.

With Glover bringing the heat on the mound, racking up 10 K’s across four innings of work, Coupeville never gave the lead back and continued to add to its advantage.

Two runs in the third, then three more in the fourth — with Roberts stroking his second two-run hit of the game — and a final run on a Glover RBI double in the seventh padded the lead and brought a smile to Wolf coach Steve Hilborn’s face.

Grove and Roberts also did time on the hill, with the former whiffing a batter in a short appearance, while the latter struck out seven across 2.2 innings of relief work.

 

Up next:

Coupeville has three games on the schedule next week, starting with a two-game series with Northwest 2B/1B League rival Orcas Island.

The Wolves host the Vikings Tuesday, before island-hopping Thursday.

CHS wraps up the week with a non-conference rumble Saturday at South Whidbey.

Wolves walk on by Braves

They’ve walked their way right into a winning streak.

Picking up 18 free passes Tuesday including six thanks to players being plunked, the Coupeville High School baseball squad blew open a close game at La Conner late, rolling to a 14-3 victory.

The win, the third-straight for the suddenly streaking Wolves, lifts them to 3-2 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 3-6 overall.

The two squads get right back at it Thursday, with the Braves visiting Cow Town for a rematch. Which should be just about enough time for Coupeville’s bruises to start healing.

Steve Hilborn’s crew of diamond dogs showed no fear of the incoming baseball, with four different batters wearing the ball.

Jesus Madrigal, Coop Cooper, and Leo Rodriguez all got drilled by wayward La Conner pitches, while baseball magnet Riley Lawless caught horsehide against flesh three times.

While that may seem extreme, the sophomore slugger was hit four times in one game earlier this season, proving he’s tough, resilient, or needs to learn to dodge better. Or a little bit of all three.

Lawless got on base the hard way twice in one inning Tuesday, as the Wolves used a 10-walk, one-hit, eight-run sixth inning to crack things open.

Coupeville entered the frame clinging to just a 3-2 lead, before the merry parade of walks allowed them to pad the lead all the way out to 11-2.

Tack on three more tallies in the seventh, with Camden Glover smoking a two-run double and Trent Thule eking out a based-loaded walk, and the game was on ice.

Early on, the Wolves stranded runners on base in each of the first four innings.

CHS got a run-scoring double from Glover in the third to claim a 1-0 lead, before La Conner snuck ahead 2-1 in the bottom half of the inning.

Coupeville got back in the lead thanks to a handful of — what else — walks, plus some smart baserunning, and a pair of passed balls by La Conner in the fifth.

Meanwhile, a trio of Wolf pitchers combined to limit the Braves to just a single hit, with Cooper, Glover, and Carson Grove combining to whiff 16 hitters across seven innings.

All in all, the visitors were the stronger team Tuesday, with Coupeville winning the hit battle 6-1, while committing a season-low one error, while the Braves botched four plays.

Landon Roberts and the Wolves have won three straight.

Rough inning sinks hardball squad

The learning processd continues.

A rebuilding Coupeville High School baseball squad fell 10-0 Tuesday to visiting Friday Harbor, the third time in four games the Wolves have been blanked.

The loss, coming in the conference opener for both teams, drops CHS to 0-1 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 0-4 overall.

The Wolves will get an almost immediate chance for redemption, however, as they bounce between islands Thursday, landing on Friday Harbor for a rematch with the Wolverines.

Tuesday’s game was close until the top of the fourth inning.

The visitors scraped out two runs in the second inning to claim the lead, but Coupeville had chances to get something going offensively.

The Wolves loaded the bases in the bottom of the first thanks to walks to Landon Roberts, Trent Thule, and Camden Glover, but had two runners snuffed out coming home.

Jesus Madrigal smacked a leadoff single to left in the second for his first varsity base knock, while Leo Rodriguez walked. But again, Friday Harbor escaped relatively unscathed.

Things took a brutal turn for Coupeville in the top of the fourth, as the hometown hardball heroes committed three errors, helping fuel an eight-run explosion for their rivals.

That left CHS trailing 10-0, and with just a pair of walks to its credit after that, the game was mercy ruled after five innings.

Pitchers Landon Roberts and Camden Glover did combine for 12 strikeouts on the afternoon, with Roberts picking up eight of those K’s.

It was the third time this season the Wolf hurlers have notched double-digit whiff totals.

Glover, who started behind the plate for the Wolves before coming on to pitch in relief, also gunned down a would-be base stealer with a superb throw to Thule at second.

Borderites power past Wolves

They left their offense at home.

Unable to generate much of an attack Saturday, the Coupeville High School baseball squad was blanked 12-0 by host Blaine, leaving the young Wolves winless on the season.

The non-conference defeat, which came against an always strong 1A hardball program, drops CHS to 0-3 on the campaign.

Up next is a return home, with the first Northwest 2B/1B League game of the season on the docket.

The Wolves host Friday Harbor Tuesday, before island-hopping for a rematch with the Wolverines two days later.

Coupeville will then close a busy week with a non-conference home game Saturday, Mar. 29 against Island rival South Whidbey.

Saturday’s game was originally set to be the season opener but was rained out.

This time around, the liquid sunshine remained at bay, but the host Borderites stayed hot all afternoon.

Blaine pushed one run across in the first, four more in the second, then tossed a five-spot on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third.

Two more runs in the fourth set the final margin, with the game mercy ruled after five frames.

Coupeville only put three baserunners aboard in this one, with the lone hit being a two-out single from Camden Glover in the top of the first inning.

Other than that, the only brief fire ignited by the Wolves came in the fourth, when Glover and Coop Cooper drew back-to-back one-out walks.

Unfortunately for CHS, the next batter popped up into a double play, with the Blaine catcher snagging the airborne ball for out #2, then nailing a straying runner at second for out #3.

Senior Landon Roberts and freshman Carson Grove teamed up on the mound for the Wolves, with Roberts picking up two strikeouts.

While they were outhit 10-1 on the day, one bright spot for Coupeville’s hardball warriors came on defense, where the visitors committed their fewest errors of the still-young season.
