Trent Diamanti (top) and Mike Duke have a story to tell.

This is NOT a story about a landmark moment in Coupeville High School basketball history.

No, it’s better than that.

This is one of those side stories about shenanigans and kismet, a tale told by those involved, and told in their own words.

It’s winter, sometime during the 2004-2005 boys’ hoops season, and our heroes are Mike Duke and Trent Diamanti, who have both gone on to become coaches and semi-responsible adults.

Featuring a wordless cameo from longtime Coupeville hoops coach Randy King, who will undoubtedly believe I made the whole thing up.

The locale? South Whidbey High School.

The time? After a game between the Wolves and Falcons.

And scene.

Trent Diamanti:

Well, we had an away game in South Whidbey and at some point, Mike and I went to wander around and talk – it really was that innocent.

And we lost track of time and ended up in a courtyard and suddenly realized it was past the time when the buses would be leaving.

Mike Duke:

Locked in a court with some sort of event going on in the South Whidbey commons.

It took way too long to realize we were locked outside and right when we did … off in the distance we see the bus leaving campus.

This was all obviously before fancy phones and text messaging available to everyone.

I believe it was the South Whidbey JV coach that gave us a ride to the Greenbank store.

Where we were going to call one of our parents to come get us, but the girls’ team was coming back from a game at King’s or something on the ferry side and we got a ride home with them.

Trent Diamanti:

Mr. King — bless his heart — either didn’t do a head count or forgot the number it was supposed to be.

I had a cell phone but no service.

There was some event going on in the high school and we started BANGING on the door for this old guy to let us in and he sauntered over as casual as could be.

Mike Duke:

If we are throwing people under the bus, I believe it was Blake Day who told coach that we went home with Trent’s dad.

Trent Diamanti:

Really took his time. So when he finally opened the door we sprinted past and saw the buses had left.

Mike Duke:

Sauntered is the perfect word. He reacted as though we were the first zombies in a George Romero movie.

Trent Diamanti:

So, the JV coach gave us a ride and somehow, we caught up with the girl’s bus.

Turned out the boy’s bus figured out we weren’t there and didn’t catch a ride about halfway.

I think the girl’s bus driver radioed the boy’s one to let them know they had us.

The funny part was we were afraid of being in trouble (at least I was, partly cause this was such a typical Trent thing, to lose track of time and get lost) but it was Mr. King who was super embarrassed.

Mike Duke:

The girl’s bus has no idea. They just stopped at the store to do the like south side kiddo drop off that they did for players that lived in that area.

Trent Diamanti:

Yeah, it was super lucky.

Mike Duke:

Oh yeah FOR SURE thought we were going to have to run all the suicides. 😆

Trent Diamanti:

I still don’t get service on my phone at South Whidbey High School…

Turns out it’s VERY IMPORTANT for coaches/teachers to keep track of all the kids under their charge. Something Coach Duke has NO IDEA ABOUT.  😆

Mike Duke:

It’s not that difficult.

I don’t like to brag or toot my own horn, but I’ve coached now 12 seasons of soccer between boys and girls at the varsity level … and I AINT NEVER LOST A KID hahaha 😆

Trent Diamanti:

I’ve lost kids but they weren’t my offspring, so it wasn’t a big deal … joking!

Mike Duke:

Hahaha

And this postscript, from the CHS girls’ basketball coach at the time.

Greg Oldham:

In my recollection, Coach King left at least one player behind every season.

“If they live, they live.”

Modern-day Duke with soccer players from Rogers High School.

Mike Duke is kind of a big deal.

During his time in Cow Town, the 2006 Coupeville High School grad was a five-sport athlete, one of the ringleaders of the loudest student section in the land, and a future star of podcasts and TV commercials.

And now he’s getting mad props for his work as a soccer coach.

Duke currently patrols the pitch sidelines in Spokane, coaching the girls soccer squad at Rogers High School.

The Pirates play in the 2A classification of the Greater Spokane League, and Duke was recently honored as the Coach of the Year.

He was joined in being honored by two of his players, with defender JoeAnna Avila tabbed as a First-Team All-Conference pick.

Goalkeeper Lylliana Wise was named to the league’s Second-Team.

After finishing his own successful run as a high school booter, Duke moved into coaching, and has worked with both boys and girls teams.

He’s also coached unified basketball and soccer teams.

During his Coupeville days, Duke played basketball, football, baseball, and soccer, then did one season of track as a senior, just “for funsies.”

He and platonic life mate Will Butela, who are both in the Coupeville Sports Hall o’ Fame, went from headlining in the CHS stands at games to operating a podcast as The Fun Brothers.

The duo has also appeared in several commercials, including a long-running Major League Baseball promotion.

Duke, up to shenanigans with fellow CHS alumni Will Butela.

“I claim this soccer pitch as my own!”

One of Coupeville’s best and brightest is hitting the big time in Spokane.

Mike Duke, a 2006 CHS grad who played five sports for the Wolves and helped turn the student section into the loudest in the land for several years, has been tabbed as the new girls soccer head coach for Rogers High School.

The Pirates are a 3A team which plays its games out of the 3A/4A Greater Spokane League, a top-level conference which includes big-timers like Central Valley, Shadle Park, Mead, and Gonzaga Prep.

While it’s his first varsity head coaching gig, Duke is no stranger to imparting wisdom or to the Pirates players he inherits.

He’s spent the past two seasons as a varsity assistant with the Rogers girls squad, while also being the boys JV head coach.

Along with his jump to the top of the girls soccer program, Duke is also moving up a rung with the boys, and will be a varsity assistant this season.

Toss in his role as co-coach with the school’s unified basketball and soccer teams, time spent with special needs athletes, and working as a para educator in the behavior intervention program, and the former Wolf ace knows his current school inside out.

Duke is taking online classes and working towards getting his teaching degree, with the goal of working full-time at the Spokane school.

Part of the reason for accepting the new soccer jobs is a desire to make an impact in both education and sports.

“I really didn’t want to have these girls have to go through another coaching regime change,” he said. “If they had hired another person it would have been the third total overhaul in the past four years. Which is just crazy to think about.

“So establishing some structure as well as providing these girls with the reassurance that someone taking this job cares about them and building this program (is big),” Duke added.

“Which at this school (very diverse, very low income) is something these kids don’t get a lot of at home.”

Back in his high school days, Duke bounced from sport to sport, and found success at every stop.

After opening with a season of high school football, he departed the gridiron.

Despite being the rare freshman to get an interception in a varsity game, being moved from his middle school slots on the offensive line and at linebacker to playing wide receiver and defensive back just “didn’t agree with me.”

Duke played four seasons of basketball and two seasons of baseball, before hopping over to join the school’s inaugural boys soccer team as a junior.

While on the pitch, he was a team captain, garnered First-Team All-League honors and led the conference in goals both years.

And, just to shake things up, he also ran track during his senior year, “for funsies.”

Both during their time at CHS, and afterwards, Duke and platonic life mate Will Butela set a standard yet to matched for creating fun, whether on the soccer pitch or bouncing in the stands at Wolf volleyball games.

Since graduation, the duo has appeared in several commercials together, at one point being the face(s) of a long-running Major League Baseball promotion, while also operating a podcast as The Fun Brothers.

Starting families, and the fact they no longer live in the same town, has made it a bit tougher to create good-natured havoc, but both vow not to let the good times totally die out.

“My goal is that it (the new job) will affect it in a positive way. More content,” Duke said. “We have been on a bit of a hiatus since my fellow fun brother has a family of five and I just had a son about 10 months ago, so it’s hard to find time (and space).

“But we will ride again, I can promise that.”

You know, I’ve seen Will Butela drink his body weight in frozen coffee, in 12 seconds flat.

So, basically, if nothing else, our time together at Videoville let me fully realize he would be a star — or end up on the FBI’s Most Wanted list. One of the two.

Mr. Butela and fellow Coupeville High School grad/shenanigans-causer Mike Duke continue to carve out their niche in the world of sports entertainment.

If you haven’t listened to all 41 of their Fun Brothers podcasts, well, your world is a dank, gray Hellscape, now isn’t it?

Here’s the latest episode:

Will Butela (left) and Mike Duke? Legendary.

Will Butela (left) and Mike Duke? Legendary.

“Am I having a sports stroke right now?”

“Is he still not killing people?!?!”

“We left early one time, because they did not deserve us!”

“They should have refunded your beer, because no amount of beer was going to make that game entertaining.”

Will Butela and Mike Duke were supremely entertaining back in their “old school” Coupeville High School days, and nothing has changed.

When the dazzling duo are not making national commercials, they are crazy busy pumping out some of the best podcasts in the biz.

Yes, it’s basically the two of them sitting around yammering — bouncing from DuckTales to Dan Marino to Making a Murderer to beer in the first two or three minutes alone in their latest masterpiece — but that’s gold, Jerry, gold.

Episode #22 just went up today, which means you may need to take the rest of the week off from work and devote yourself to catching up.

Your boss will understand.
