The kid who once thrilled Coupeville football fans is about to become a man who gets paid for doing what he loves.

Former Wolf legend Mitch Pelroy, a two-way star during his time in Cow Town, has been notified he will be drafted by the Rivals Professional Football League Dec. 2.

The eight-team league, based in Florida and Michigan, plays an eight-game schedule, and is a great way for players to pile up high-quality game film and attract notice from the marquee leagues — the NFL, CFL and AFL.

Pelroy, who was an All-Cascade Conference player at Coupeville, finished a stellar run at Montana Western last season, where he was a defensive back and kick returner.

After a red-shirt season, he played in 36 games across four seasons for the Bulldogs, piling up 1,122 yards returning punts and kickoffs.

Pelroy also had 55 tackles, 14 assists, two sacks, four tackles for a loss and broke up six passes while playing in the Montana Western secondary.

To prepare for the RPL combine, he trained four times a week in Bozeman with former New England Patriots linebacker Dane Fletcher.

Once at the combine, Pelroy competed in the 40 yard dash, broad jump, vertical jump, shuttle run and L-cone speed and agility drill.

He impressed the scouts and coaches on hand, earning his ticket to the draft, where he’s guaranteed of being selected.

Once he finds out his team, Pelroy will be given a performance-based incentive contract, with the possibility of guaranteed money from signing or roster bonuses.

“Getting paid to play football has been a dream since I could walk,” he wrote on Facebook. “Only time and hard work will tell.”

During his time at CHS, Pelroy was an All-Conference football player on both sides of the ball, while also playing basketball and running track for the Wolves.

He went to the state track meet in five different events and held the school record in the 200 at graduation.

Wolves. Wolves everywhere.

Saturday is a day generally devoted to college football and Coupeville High School alumni made their impact felt on the holiest of days.

Five former CHS stars are currently on college football rosters, with Nick Streubel (Central Washington) Joel Walstad (Midland), Mitch Pelroy (Montana Western), Jake Tumblin (Simon Fraser) and Josh Bayne (Simon Fraser) all following their dreams of gridiron glory.

Tumblin and Bayne made their college debuts Saturday, as both played in a 31-14 loss at Western Oregon.

“They both saw time on special teams. Both on kick-off and Josh on punt return. Jake saw snaps in the second quarter,” said Chris Tumblin.

Meanwhile, several states over, Pelroy, the elder statesman of the bunch, sparkled in Dillon as he and his Bulldog teammates rallied to beat the College of Idaho 24-20.

The speedy junior affected play in several ways, recovering a fumble and getting in on three tackles on defense and returning a pair of kickoffs.

He took one back 20 yards and the other 10.

Montana Western won the game when freshman quarterback J.D. Ferris hit tight end Matt Lickfold with a five-yard touchdown toss with just 18.9 seconds to play, capping an 80-yard drive while racing the clock.

The Bulldogs (2-0) have won six straight, keeping a streak alive that began late last season.

Still can’t catch Mitch Pelroy.

The former Coupeville High School football sensation kicked off a new season of college ball Saturday the same way he ended the last one — two or three steps ahead of his would-be tacklers.

Pelroy, now a junior at Montana Western, sparkled on both sides of the ball as the Bulldogs decimated host Rocky Mountain 49-6.

It was the fifth straight win for Pelroy and Co., who closed out 2014 with a four-game winning streak.

The former Wolf handled both of Montana Western’s kickoff returns, rolling up 44 yards in the return game, while also chipping in with a tackle and two assists from his defensive back position.

The ‘Dog defense was stellar all afternoon, forcing eight turnovers.

A.J. Wilson, in particular, had the kind of afternoon defensive grunts can usually only dream about. He scored three times, bringing back two fumbles and an interception for touchdowns.

Freshman quarterback J.D. Ferris added a pair of touchdown strikes as Montana Western easily captured the Frontier Conference win.

The Bulldogs, and their speedy former Wolf, return to Dillon, Montana for their home opener next Saturday (Sept. 12), when they’ll play host to the College of Idaho.

Three tackles sparked a third straight win.

Sparked by the defensive performance of Coupeville High School grad Mitch Pelroy (two solo tackles and an assist), Montana Western roared back to upend College of Idaho 30-27 Saturday in NAIA football action.

The victory lifted the Bulldogs to 5-5 overall, 5-4 in Frontier League play and avenged an earlier season loss to the Yotes, who also have a Wolf alum on their roster.

Former CHS lineman Anthony Maggio is redshirting during his freshman year.

Playing on Senior Day, Montana Western grabbed the lead with two minutes to play.

Bulldog quarterback Tyler Hulse drove his squad down the field, setting up sophomore Sam Rutherford, who slammed in for the go-ahead touchdown on a nine-yard run.

Montana Western then sealed the victory when Jesse McCloud picked off a last-second Yote pass.

Pelroy has been a force on both sides of the ball as the Bulldogs have bounced back after a rough start.

He has eighteen tackles (14 solo, four assists) from his position in the defensive backfield and is the team’s top kickoff (15 returns for 356 yards) and punt returner (4-56).

Montana Western closes the regular season Nov. 8 with a road game at Montana State-Northern. The first time around the Bulldogs demolished the Polar Bears 50-30.
