Katy and Lyle Wells have been busy bees lately.

With three children, all whom play for different diamond squads, the family has been bouncing all over the place.

Now, with the two oldest kids having wrapped their seasons this week, things may slow down a bit.

Maybe.

With Oak Harbor’s Babe Ruth baseball squad and North Whidbey Little League’s Majors softball team being eliminated one game shy of a state tourney berth, Ulrik and Izzy Wells will be spectators when lil’ sis Savina takes the diamond next week.

The youngest Wells is a key player on Central Whidbey Little League’s Minors softball squad, the Yellow Jackets, which opens its best-of-three District 11 championship tilt July 5.

Sedro-Woolley is the foe and the games (Tuesday, Wednesday and possibly Thursday) will be played at Rhododendron Park in Coupeville.

The Yellow Jackets, who went 13-1, are the only one of Central’s three softball squads which were able to advance to All-Stars as a team.

The 13-3 Venom (Juniors) and 15-0-1 Crush (Majors) didn’t have enough players sticking around to go on as complete teams.

So, Izzy Wells and Crush teammate Abby Mulholland jumped over to North Whidbey to keep playing, and the Purple Thunder took Sedro to a full three games in their tourney.

After falling 9-5 in the opener, North Whidbey won the middle game 8-3, then was nipped 7-4 in the finale.

Wells gunned down eight batters from the pitcher’s circle in the championship game.

The Babe Ruth squad, which features three Coupeville players — Daniel Olson, Gavin Knoblich and Ulrik Wells — split a pair of games in a round-robin tourney, but was eliminated from advancing to state by run differential.

Oak Harbor beat Sedro 6-5, then fell hard to Friday Harbor, losing 13-3.

Sedro bopped Friday Harbor 12-6 in the other game, leaving all three teams with 1-1 records.

Sedro advanced to state based on giving up the fewest runs, as they surrendered 12 to Friday Harbor’s 15 and Oak Harbor’s 18.

Knoblich ripped a double and a single in the finale, while Olson had a pair of singles. Both he and Wells knocked in runs, as well.

Hunter Smith swung a big bat Tuesday.

Pounding a three-run triple, then coming around to score when the ensuing throw went wild, the Coupeville Middle School baseball star sparked his Oak Harbor Babe Ruth squad to an 8-2 win in their district playoff opener.

Powered by Smith and CMS schoolmates Joey Lippo and Gabe Eck, the ‘Cats had little trouble polishing off Burlington.

Now comes the big challenge, as Oak Harbor advances to play top-seeded Friday Harbor Wednesday.

Win the “Battle of the Harbors” and Ferndale awaits on Thursday.

Against Burlington, the ‘Cats benefited from Smith’s huge swing and from a stellar start on the mound from Chris Trisler.

Lippo cracked Oak Harbor’s first hit, one of two he collected in the game, while Eck snared several key catches in right.

Sparked by strong defensive play from its Coupeville contingent, the Oak Harbor Babe Ruth baseball squad rolled to its sixth straight win Thursday.

The Wildcats earned a sweep in their two-game series against Anacortes, bouncing their foes 7-3.

James Besaw and Andre Eaton combined on the mound for the win and greatly benefited from the slick glove work shown behind them.

Oak Harbor turned two double plays — the first going from Thomas Anderson to Wolf Joey Lippo to Kamren Mebane, while the second was kicked off by Wolf shortstop Hunter Smith snagging a line drive.

Josh Margraff capped the web gems by pulling off a spectacular sliding catch in right field to close the fifth.

Besaw, who was making his first start, went the first two innings, then turned the ball over to Eaton. Coupeville’s Jake Pease caught both of them, anchoring the team from behind the plate.

The hired guns are having a noticable impact.

Powered by five Coupeville Middle School players who travel up to the big city for games, the Oak Harbor Babe Ruth baseball squad continues to scorch opponents this spring.

The latest foe to face the fury of the Wolf-assisted Wildcats was Anacortes, which got itself blitzed 18-1.

Coupeville hurlers Joey Lippo and Jake Pease combined with Oak Harbor’s Thomas Anderson to scatter just three hits, while the ‘Cat offense went bonkers, hitting around in three of the five innings played.

Oak Harbor has three games left to play before opening the district playoffs against Burlington.

They beat that squad 7-6 in their only meeting of the season, though coaches on both sides played it fairly close to the vest, since they already knew about the looming postseason match-up.

Lippo and Pease are joined on the ‘Cat team by fellow CMS athletes Gabe Eck, Hunter Smith and Ty Eck.

Five men strong and kickin’ booty.

Fueled by their Coupeville Middle School players, who can now be hailed as the Fab Five, the Oak Harbor Babe Ruth baseball squad is on a hot streak as the playoffs near.

The Wildcats, who feature CMS stars Joey Lippo, Hunter Smith, Ty Eck, Gabe Eck and newcomer Jake Pease, have won four straight and qualified for the district playoffs.

After slipping past Anacortes 9-7, the ‘Cats pounded Concrete 14-3 and 12-1. Oak Harbor then edged Burlington 7-6 to keep the streak alive.

While most of the roster is Oak Town-based, the Coupeville five are making an impact.

Lippo is a fixture behind the plate and he and Smith are swinging hot bats.

Meanwhile, the speed demon Eck bothers chip in wherever they play, with Ty seeing mound duty against Burlington while Gabe patrolled center field.
