Wolf buzzsaws shred Vikings

Fire up the zone and shut down their rivals.

Playing inspired defense Friday, the Coupeville High School JV girls’ basketball team bolted out to a 20-point first-quarter lead and ran away with a 58-12 win over visiting Orcas Island.

The victory lifts Scout Smith’s squad to 1-0 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 2-2 overall.

The Wolves, who have been bearing down in practice, have seen immediate results.

“The girls played a great game and their effort and commitment in practice is having a direct impact on our games,” Smith said.

The JV has been working on implementing a zone press, and that, combined with a willingness to get out and run on offense sparked CHS to a 21-1 lead after one quarter of play.

Tack on another large surge in the second frame, and the halftime advantage was a tasty 38-6.

“The girls executed beautifully,” Smith said. “I have to credit our team with the great work they do on running our fast break.

“I constantly reiterate that our fast break is our primary offense, and they have completely bought in. Every time we rebound, we have eyes up, and runners getting down court.

“It has a massive impact.”

Seven of nine Wolves scored against Orcas, with fab frosh Adeline Maynes outscoring the Vikings by herself as she racked up a game-high 18 points.

But it wasn’t just buckets for the high-energy hoops star.

“Addie clearly had a great night scoring wise,” Smith said.

“But what might go unnoticed on the scoresheet is the work she puts in at the top of our press to cause turnovers and quick buckets.”

Smith also praised Lexis Drake — “I have to give props to hers for her good shooting night. As soon as she gets the ball she is always looking to shoot and score” — and Haylee Armstrong.

“Haylee also continues to play a big role for us offensively and defensively. She has great vision and an exceptional read of the game.

“Her ability to drive and finish with both her left and right hand makes her a dynamic player and an offensive threat,” Smith added.

Armstrong banked in 11 to support Maynes, while Capri Anter (8), Drake (7), Sydney Van Dyke (6), Ava Lucero (6), and Chelsi Stevens (2) scored, and Jeanna Nitta and Amelia Crowder helped spark the withering defense.

Anderson explodes, Wolves win thriller

“The boys played with so much heart all night.”

Kicking off Northwest 2B/1B League play with a bang Friday, the Coupeville High School varsity boys’ basketball squad survived a wild one, holding off visiting Orcas Island 72-67 in two overtimes to take an early advantage in the conference standings.

The win lifts the Wolves, who host non-league foe Morton-White Pass Saturday, to 2-3 overall, 1-0 in NWL play, and earns the stamp of approval from CHS hoops guru Brad Sherman.

“It was a great game,” he said, then headed off to bed to dream about more wins.

Friday’s rumble featured Wolf junior Chase Anderson banking in a career-high 42 points — just six off of Jeff Stone’s school-record 48, which has stood since 1970 — and nerve-wracking plays from both teams down the stretch.

Coupeville shot out to a 16-10 lead after one quarter, only to see Orcas trim the deficit back down to 29-26 at the half.

Up 49-45 after three, the Wolves still had a 58-55 lead up until Joe Stephens drilled his fourth, and final, three-ball with just 10 seconds left in regulation.

With the ball in its hands, Coupeville got multiple shots up in the frantic final seconds, but none would drop.

Enter the refs, who whistled Orcas for a foul, sending the Wolves to the line with 0:00 on the clock, holding two opportunities to win the game.

The first freebie hit the front of the rim, the second slid off the side, and fans got extra action, whether they wanted it or not.

In the first overtime, the call went the other way, but the result was eerily similar.

With the game knotted at 63, Orcas was handed two charity shots with seven seconds on the clock and promptly clanked both.

It was fitting, as the Vikings, who netted eight of nine free throws in regulation, were just 3-9 across the two extra periods. In contrast, Coupeville was 8-16 in regulation but rebounded to go 8-10 at the line in overtime.

While a wild Wolf shot at the buzzer failed to break the tie in the first overtime, the second extra four-minute stretch decisively belonged to the hometown hoops heroes.

Anderson and Hunter Bronec netted huge buckets in the second overtime, while Hurlee Bronec iced the win with precision free throw shooting in the final moments.

Jack Porter finished with nine points, while both Battlin’ Bronec Brothers netted six.

Landon Roberts knocked down five, Camden Glover banked in four, and Johnny Porter, Easton Green, and Malachi Somes all saw floor time in the thriller.

For Anderson, it was a career-making night.

Scoring four points in the first, 12 in the second, 16 in a torrid third, four in the fourth, and six more in overtime, he joins a very short list of Wolves to crack 40 in a varsity game, players such as Jeff Stone, Allen Black, and Logan Downes.

In one night, Anderson jumps from 312 career points to 354, moving from #96 to #77 on the school’s career scoring chart, which has been compiled across 108 seasons.

Among the all-timers he passes are Nick Streubel, David Ford, Bob Rea, Utz Conard, Robin Larson, and Aaron Trumbull.

Big battle, bigger win

“It was a battle!”

Facing a strong Orcas Island squad Friday night, the Coupeville High School varsity girls’ basketball team found itself trailing by six points heading into the fourth quarter.

But then, in a move which brought a smile to the face of coach Megan Richter, the Wolves dug deep and rode the cheers of their home fans to a stirring come-from-behind win.

Closing on a 16-7 run, with four different players sharing scoring honors, Coupeville pulled out a 41-38 victory to draw first blood in Northwest 2B/1B League play.

Now 3-2 overall heading into another home game Saturday — a non-conference tilt with Morton-White Pass — the Wolves are starting to jel.

“I’m super proud of these girls and how they stayed in the game and fought until the end,” Richter said.

“Danica (Strong) came up with some big rebounds and put her free throws in when the pressure was on. Our defense was tight, and we worked really well together.

“Things are starting to really come together for us!!”

Strong netted five of her seven points in the white-hot spotlight of the fourth quarter — with all of those late-game tallies coming at the free throw line — while Lyla Stuurmans, Mia Farris, and Katie Marti all chipped in to fuel the frantic finale.

It was an uphill battle for Coupeville, which fell behind 13-6 after one quarter and 22-14 at the half.

The Wolves started to chip away at the deficit with a modest 11-9 surge in the third quarter, then turned things up several notches down the stretch.

Marti, who passed her cousin, Breeanna Messner, to claim 49th on the career scoring chart, paced CHS with 12 points, while Strong (7), Jada Heaton (6), Lyla Stuurmans (6), Farris (6), Madison McMillan (2), and Teagan Calkins (2) also scored.

Fab frosh Tenley Stuurmans brought some defensive heat to her time on the floor, while Haylee Armstrong and Capri Anter were fervent in their vocal support from their perches on the bench.

Houston, we have another win

Davin Houston is heating up.

The free-wheeling Coupeville High School sophomore, a fan favorite who always stops to scrimmage after games with elementary school hoops stars, went off for a second straight game Friday night.

By the time Daniel and Alia’s youngest was done, Houston had torched visiting Orcas Island for a season-high 20 points, sparking the Wolf JV boys’ basketball team to a come-from-behind 53-41 win.

The victory, coming in the Northwest 2B/1B League opener, lifts CHS to 2-2 on the season.

And the Wolves will try and keep the good times flowing when they turn right back around Saturday afternoon and host non-conference foe Morton-White Pass.

They’ll take the court led by Houston, who has rattled the rims for 37 points across the last two games, and Mahkai Myles, who singed the nets for a season-best 12 points Friday in support of his running mate.

Orcas came out strongly, jumping ahead 16-9 after one quarter of play, but the Wolves had an immediate response.

With Houston and Myles combining for 14 points in the second frame, CHS went on an 18-4 tear to claim the lead for good.

From there, the Wolves led 35-32 through three, then closed with a vengeance, bombing the Vikings 18-9 in the final period.

Easton Green (6), Malachi Somes (5), Liam Blas (4), Sage Arends (2), Carson Grove (2), and Riley Lawless (2) scored in support of Coupeville’s big two, while Kyle McCrimmon and Nathan Coxsey also saw floor time for coaches Craig Anderson and Jon Roberts.

Coupeville league mate wins state soccer title

The Northwest 2B/1B League is back in charge.

Coupeville’s conference re-staked its claim to having the top collection of boys’ soccer teams across the two classifications Saturday afternoon, with Orcas Island toppling Lopez Island 2-0 in Federal Way to win a state title.

It’s the third time in the last four seasons that a NWL squad has captured the crown, with Friday Harbor winning in 2022 and Orcas in 2021.

Upper Columbia Academy, which is playing Providence Classical Christian in the 3rd/4th place game Saturday night, won the title in 2023, momentarily breaking the run.

With Orcas, Lopez, and PCC bringing home trophies, that gives the NWL 11 of the 16 awards handed out in 1B/2B across the past four seasons.

The last time Coupeville’s conference didn’t produce at least half of the final four teams was 2020 … when the pandemic erased all state tournaments.

All four of the NWL teams to make the playoffs survived through bi-district play to make it to state, with Friday Harbor, which edged out CHS and Mount Vernon Christian for the final postseason slot, also advancing.

Those Wolverines were knocked out in the state quarterfinals by Upper Columbia Academy (1-0), while Orcas, Lopez, and PCC all won their big dance openers.

Lopez took out the defending champs 2-1 in the semifinals, winning in a shootout, while Orcas drilled PCC 4-1 in the other matchup.

That set up a third showdown between the Vikings and Lobos.

The teams split their first two meetings, with both coming out on top to a 1-0 tune.

Coupeville, which went 6-8-1 overall, 4-4 in league action, lost 3-1 to Lopez and 5-0 to Orcas this season.
