They’re a solid #2.

In the season-and-a-half since rejoining the Northwest 2B/1B League, the Coupeville High School varsity volleyball team has played 16 matches against conference foes, going 12-4.

That’s 12-0 vs. the combined forces of Friday Harbor, Concrete, Darrington, Mount Vernon Christian, and Orcas Island.

And, after a road loss Wednesday, 0-4 against two-time defending state champs La Conner, which hasn’t lost a league tilt in a decade-plus, or dropped a set in any kind of match since Covid first arrived.

The Braves, anchored by junior Ellie Marble — well on her way to a third-straight league MVP season — are big hitters, dynamic passers, and high IQ athletes.

Hence Wednesday’s 25-12, 25-11, 25-18 win, which lifts La Conner to 7-0 in league play, 8-0 overall.

Coupeville, which is off until a trip to Orcas Oct. 12, is 6-1 in NWL competition, 6-3 overall.

While the Wolves are chasing the Braves — just like every other 2B program in the state — they are putting up a strong fight.

There were moments in Wednesday’s match when young Wolves like freshman Savina Wells cracked off some lightning bolts which hit and exploded with fury.

Also, a lot of hustle, as Alita Blouin, Maddie Georges, and Co. hit the floor in pursuit of incoming balls, kept plays alive, and refused to go quietly.

But, ultimately, La Conner’s impressive net game proved hard to handle, giving Braves fans much to enjoy.

Still, even in defeat, Coupeville coach Cory Whitmore found positives.

“It was a bit rough at times, but La Conner is as-advertised, and at least had to earn their points,” he said. “When given the chance, we had few attack errors and service errors, which is more progress.

“The third set was stronger being that there were more rallies and defensive chases,” Whitmore added. “I thought that when given the chance, we executed our game-plan pretty well.

“We just have to tighten that up to play the long-game with them, set-to-set and generate our own offense and chaos-creating plays. Throughout the match, I was pleased to see our cohesion remain strong and energy remain consistent.”

Wednesday stats:

Alita Blouin — 7 digs, 1 ace
Maddie Georges — 1 kill, 8 digs, 8 assists
Taygin Jump — 1 dig
Ryanne Knoblich — 3 digs
Jill Prince — 2 kills, 1 block assist
Olivia Schaffeld
— 1 kill, 2 digs, 1 block assist, 1 ace
Lyla Stuurmans
— 1 kill, 4 digs
Lucy Tenore
— 2 kills, 1 block assist, 1 ace
Savina Wells
— 4 kills, 1 block assist

Ryanne Knoblich chipped in with tons o’ hustle.

They exited with a roar.

Handing the previously-undefeated Skagit Bats travel team its first loss of the summer, the Coupeville High School softball squad earned a doubleheader split Wednesday night.

Following up a 5-4 win in the opener with a narrow 6-3 loss to a well-rested Burlington squad in the nightcap, the Wolves finished their off-season run with a strong 6-3 record.

Coupeville nailed down the victory when Gwen Gustafson lifted a sac fly to the heavens in the bottom of the seventh inning, sending Savina Wells scooting for home with the deciding run.

The Bats have spent the summer blowing people out, but Coupeville came close to toppling them the first time around, falling 13-10.

Take that narrow earlier defeat, then flip the script with Wednesday’s win, and CHS coach Kevin McGranahan came away pleased, noting it as “a great measure of development.”

After a tense opening game in the July heat, the 2B Wolves hung tough with 2A Burlington, before running out of gas at the end.

“We were hot and exhausted, and Burlington was fresh with only one game,” McGranahan said. “We lost, but definitely could beat them if fresh.”

With a full roster for summer ball, the Wolves can only benefit from the additional playing time.

“This was a great summer and the team gelled very well,” McGranahan said. “We will be ahead of the game come season start.

“I am so proud of all the girls that practiced and played through the summer; their commitment and work ethic will pay off.”

McGranahan also praised the player’s families, and his coaching staff, which includes Ron Wright, Lark Gustafson, Katrina McGranahan, and Aaron Lucero.

“I want to make sure and thank all the parents; without their support this doesn’t work,” he said. “We had packed stands every Wednesday evening.

“This coaching staff is amazing; these girls are in good hands.”

While he won’t work with his players as a group again until next spring, Kevin McGranahan hopes each diamond warrior takes the initiative to keep improving.

“Well, about six months off now, and the team needs to work on their own through fall and winter to maintain where we are,” he said. “Well done, ladies! See you in about six months.”

After a tough loss, the Whidbey Island All-Star juniors softball squad is ready to sprint back into action at the state tourney. (Photo by JohnsPhotos.net)

They can still win a title.

Saturday’s opener at the state tourney in Vancouver didn’t end the way the Whidbey Island All-Star juniors softball squad wanted, as it lost a late lead and fell 12-11 to Camas.

But the big dance is a double-elimination tourney, and with short memories and blazing bats, the Inferno can fight their way back.

The road to redemption begins Sunday afternoon, when Whidbey plays a loser-out game against South Hill Little League of Puyallup.

Win there, and the Inferno return to action Monday.

Keep coming out on top and they could play all the way through July 15.

It won’t be an easy path at this point, with Whidbey needing six straight wins across five days to claim a state title.

But, if the Inferno come out like they did for the first four-and-a-half innings Saturday, it’s not an impossible dream.

Facing the tourney hosts, Whidbey jumped on Camas early, building a 4-0 lead after an inning and a half, eventually stretching the lead all the way out to 10-4 headed into the bottom of the fifth.

Haylee Burleigh got things started early, whacking a triple to right in the top of the first, before scooting home on an RBI single off the bat of Savina Wells.

Madison McMillan followed Wells to the plate, bopping a run-scoring double to center, and the Inferno were heating up.

A double from Loto Tupu and a single to short from Adyson Morales set the table in the second, with Payton Ludemann bringing both of her teammates around to score on a shot to right.

Up 4-0 and cruising, Whidbey hit a brief bump in the bottom of the second, however, allowing Camas to crawl back in the game and tie things up.

But, as quickly as the hosts showed a bit of life, the Inferno returned to issuing a beat-down.

Three runs in the third, and another three-spot in the fourth, while Wells was firing BB’s from the pitcher’s circle, put Whidbey in a pleasant position.

The Inferno were getting contributions from everyone on the roster — 11 of 13 players collected a hit in the opener — and many of the base-knocks were of the extra-base variety.

Coupeville’s Katie Marti crunched an RBI double in the third, while Oak Harbor’s Layla Suto and Tupu crashed back-to-back one-out three-baggers in the fourth.

And there could have been more.

Up 10-4, the Inferno stranded Tupu at third, starting their only dry stretch of the afternoon — a run of nine straight batters who went down from the end of the fourth inning through the start of the seventh.

Given a reprieve, Camas dug deep and scratched out five runs in the bottom of the fifth to get all the way back to 10-9.

The fatal blow was a bases-loaded triple from Papermaker slugger Kallie True, but the Inferno  promptly picked her off third to end the inning and strand the tying run.

Camas had found its groove, unfortunately, and pushed two more runs across in the bottom of the sixth to claim the lead for the first time all day.

Though trailing 11-10, Whidbey came up huge on defense for a second-straight inning, with McMillan pulling off an unassisted double play on a liner to third to end the bleeding.

Down to their final two outs, the Inferno proved plucky and then some.

Bringing an end to her team’s run of nine straight outs, Tupu whacked a one-out single, with Taylor Brotemarkle following with a hit of her own.

Getting crafty, Whidbey used a bunt to bring the tying run home, with Morales artfully using her bat to drop the ball with perfection.

A Ludemann single loaded the bags, but this time it was Camas which escaped, as it pulled off its own double play on a liner, with the ball flying to first base this time around.

The Inferno came a single out from sending the game to extra innings, only to see the Papermakers drop in the game-breaking hit in the bottom of the seventh.

True singled, stole second, went to third on a fielder’s choice, then came home with the winning run on a walk-off RBI single from Ainsley Schweitzer.

Whidbey’s hit parade was led by Tupu, who collected three base-knocks, including a double and triple.

Burleigh, Wells, McMillan, and Brotemarkle each had two hits, while Teagan Calkins, Suto, Morales, Marti, Ludemann, and Lilly Norman netted one apiece.

Jada Heaton and Mia Farris rounded out the active roster, with Heaton collecting Whidbey’s lone walk on the afternoon – courtesy of getting hit by a pitch.

Wells went the distance for the Inferno, whiffing five, with 80 of her 127 pitches being strikes.

One of 47 runs scored by the Inferno.

Vancouver, here they come.

Delivering a blistering offensive attack under a blazing sun Saturday, the Whidbey Island Inferno All-Stars juniors softball team cruised to a pair of victories, claiming a District 11 title.

Dismantling the Skagit County All-Stars 20-0 and 27-1 at Coupeville’s Rhododendron Park, the Inferno claimed their district’s berth to the state tournament, which begins July 10.

The Whidbey Island All-Stars, who carry a 14-player roster which boasts seven players each from Coupeville and Oak Harbor, proved to be a well-balanced, and extremely-deadly squad.

“Girls were awesome today!,” said Whidbey coach Fred Farris. “Everyone contributed and both (pitching) batteries were awesome! Great defense all the way around.”

How Saturday played out:

Game 1:

Playing as the road team, even though it hosted the district tourney, Whidbey Island essentially put the game away with a six-run top of the first.

From there, the Inferno slowly built the lead out to 8-0, then opened a can of whup-ass in the top of the fourth, raining down 12 runs and bringing the mercy rule into effect.

Whidbey opened things up with a five-hit explosion in the first, with three of those base-knocks being of the extra-base variety.

Doubles from Haylee Burleigh and Loto Tupu were big, while Coupeville’s Savina Wells rocked the joint with an RBI triple to center field.

New teammate Layla Suto went her one base better in the second inning, blasting an inside-the-park solo home run, before Wells came around to mash both a double and another triple in the fourth inning.

Madison McMillan added a two-bagger as Whidbey finished with seven extra-base hits among 15 base-knocks in the opener.

While the bats were electric, the Inferno was also lights-out on defense, while Wells offered the visitors little to hit while wheeling and dealing from the pitcher’s circle.

The incoming Coupeville High School freshman whiffed five across four innings of work, scattering five hits and never putting herself in danger.

Game 2:

There was no 12-run explosion in the nightcap, just the steady drip-drip-drip of runs splashing across the scoreboard.

Seven Inferno players tapped home in the first, with another five coming across in the second.

Tack on eight in the third and a final seven in the fourth, and the electronic numbers kept hoppin’.

Whidbey whacked six extra-base hits in game two, with McMillan crunching a triple, and Payton Ludemann rifling a pair of doubles.

Taylor Brotemarkle, Wells, and Tupu also collected two-baggers as part of an 18-hit rain of terror.

Ramona Ryder moved in to the circle to pitch the closer, limiting Skagit County to just a single hit, while piling up five K’s.

While offense largely carried the game, defense had its moments as well, with Burleigh and Mia Farris teaming up for an inning-ending double play on a pop-up to second base.

District tourney stats:

Taylor Brotemarkle (2 runs, 3 hits, 1 RBI)
Haylee Burleigh (3 runs, 1 hit, 1 RBI, 2 walks)
Teagan Calkins (4 runs, 2 hits, 4 walks)
Mia Farris (6 runs, 2 hits, 1 RBI, 3 walks)
Jada Heaton (1 run)
Payton Ludemann (2 runs, 2 hits, 1 RBI, 1 walk)
Katie Marti (1 run, 1 walk)
Madison McMillan (6 runs, 3 hits, 5 RBI, 2 walks)
Lilly Norman (1 run, 1 hit, 1 RBI, 1 walk)
Ramona Ryder (3 runs, 3 hits, 2 RBI)
Layla Suto (7 runs, 4 hits, 2 RBI, 3 walks)
Loto Tupu (4 runs, 5 hits, 3 RBI)

One island, ready to thump on everyone else.

North and Central Whidbey are teaming up for the next round of little league Juniors softball competition.

With seven players from each league, the Whidbey Island Inferno All-Stars are a well-balanced squad, with hopes of making it all the way to the state tourney.

“This is a really solid team with strong pitching, hitting, and depth at each defensive position,” said coach Fred Farris. “It is going to be a lot of fun watching these girls compete this post season.

“Special shout out to North Whidbey manager Shelly Ryder and Central Whidbey coaches Shawn Calkins, Bella Blazek, and Philip Brotemarkle for all their time and efforts for helping get this team ready for the post season.”

The Inferno host a combined South Skagit/Sedro-Woolley/Burlington team in a best-of-three showdown this weekend, with the winner advancing to the big dance.

All games are at Rhododendron Park in Coupeville, with Game 1 at 11 AM Saturday, June 26, and Game 2 at 3 PM the same day. The concession stand will be open.

If a winner-take-all Game 3 is necessary, it will be June 27.

The District 11 champ travels to Vancouver for the state tourney, which kicks off July 10.
