Katie Smith is prairie royalty.
Part of the Sherman clan, the Coupeville High School grad, who celebrates her 20th birthday today, has roots that run deep in this town.
Before she headed off to U-Dub, she was a standout athlete at every sport she tried. Softball, volleyball, basketball, track — you name it, she kicked your butt at it.
Little sister of one-time college hoops star Kassie (Lawson) O’Neil and big sis to current Wolf baseball stud Kurtis Smith, Katie kept the athletic flame of excellence burning for her family.
But there was more, much more.
She was, and is, class personified. Every day in every way.
I am deeply impressed with how she carried herself, and without going into the particulars, how she handled bad times as well as good times.
She took responsibility for her actions, she never wavered in standing up for what was right, and she was a shining star for the Wolves.
Katie may not be playing ball any more, but she remains that person who everyone should be proud to have had come out of Coupeville.
If you want to know what excellence looks like, what commitment and class sounds like, go no further. Katie Smith is all that and much, much more.
Happy birthday, Miss Smith. I hope you have a day worthy of you.
