The end of the road comes for all athletes.

For former Coupeville High School softball stars Madeline Roberts and Hailey Hammer, this past weekend marked the end of different stages of their college careers.

Roberts, who was on crutches at the end after suffering an injury, marked the end of her two-year run as a Dolphin with Sophomore Night festivities at Shoreline Community College.

Meanwhile, Hammer, a freshman, saw the regular season roll to a close at Everett Community College.

Shoreline is 16-16 overall, 10-10 in league play, while Everett is 16-20, 9-11.

The two teams advance to play in the postseason, though Roberts will likely be out due to a possible ACL injury.

Both Wolf grads put in strong work during their respective seasons, as the duo comprised 50% of Coupeville’s college diamond dandies.

Ben Etzell, a sophomore at Saint John’s University and Monica Vidoni, a freshman at Rainy River Community College, both played in Minnesota this season.

Vidoni’s season is done, while Etzell and the Johnnies baseball squad are off to the NCAA D-3 playoffs later this week.

Hammer is hitting .283 with 17 hits, including a home run and a pair of doubles.

She’s racked up seven RBI, scored nine runs, walked six times and seen action in 24 games.

Roberts has appeared in 21 games, compiling nine hits (including a double), five walks, four steals and three RBI.

Connected by a day, connected by their energy, connected by their spirit.

Madeline Roberts and Kenzi LaRue, who share a birthday today, have both worn the red and black for Coupeville High School, and done it with style and conviction.

Though they didn’t play together, being four years apart and partial to different sports, their paths are not that different.

Both are part of a bold, vibrant group of young women who would make the pioneers of Title IX proud.

The days when female sports teams had a “Lady” slapped on their uniforms are (mostly) gone.

There are no Lady Wolves at Coupeville. Just Wolves.

Boys. Girls. Both are athletes. Both put in just as much hard work, sweat and effort. Both deserve equal coverage for equal play.

For Roberts and LaRue, I doubt either one ever had to think about that. And that’s exactly how it should be.

Maddy strode the softball diamond like a boss, confident in herself and her skills.

A slap-hittin’ sensation, she rode her talents and drive to earn a college softball scholarship, then shocked the world by also playing basketball once she got to Shoreline Community College.

Part of a huge, athletically-inclined family, Roberts was born to be a star and has lived up to that heritage.

LaRue, lil’ sis to former Wolf football star Caleb Valko, is just beginning to seize her moment.

As a freshman last year she played volleyball and tennis and her ease with both games grew as the seasons progressed.

Never shy, she embraced her teammates and the spotlight, and the future is a bright one for the bubbly Kenzi.

As both enjoy their cake day, a quick happy birthday and this thought:

You both are strong, talented young women. Be proud of yourselves, every day, and never stop reaching for more.

Madeline Roberts is fillin’ up the stat sheet.

The former Coupeville High School softball star is deep into her freshman year at Shoreline Community College, and among the team leaders in several categories.

Through 22 games (the school’s web site hasn’t added stats for Sunday’s games, which is where these photos came from), Mad Dog is hitting .254 with a home run and 10 RBI.

Roberts has tallied 17 hits, 17 runs, walked seven times and stolen eight bases.

Plus, she’s enough of a camera magnet to get John Fisken to travel down to Shoreline to snap these pics.

So she’s doing alright.

Slap hitter?

She’ll slap it over the fence, thanks.

Former CHS softball star Madeline Roberts continued her strong freshman season at Shoreline Community College, crushing a ball for a home run this weekend.

And it wasn’t an inside-the-park job, but a moon shot over the center field wall.

“Definitely over the fence!,” said a jubilant Roberts.

The speedy lead-off hitter, who also played basketball in the winter for the Dolphins, is currently among the team leaders in most offensive categories.

Her eight RBI puts her in a tie for second on the squad, while her five stolen bases also lands her at #2 on the stat sheet.

Roberts is first on the team in being hit by pitches (twice), third in runs (eight) and has collected 10 hits and six walks so far this year.

Madeline Roberts is days away from officially becoming a two-sport college athlete.

The Shoreline Community College freshman, who’s about to wrap up an unexpected basketball season (her first in four years) kicks off her main sport in less than a week.

Roberts is on scholarship as a softball player and she and her Dolphin teammates open play March 4.

The school posted the top photo, showcasing this year’s team, on its Facebook page this afternoon, and we’re passing it on to Wolf Nation.

Mad Dog fever continues to rage across the land.
