Want to be in charge? Make the final call? Wear a snazzy uniform?

All of that (and more) can be yours if you step up and help local baseball and softball players by volunteering as an umpire with Central Whidbey Little League.

CWLL, which closes player registration Feb. 28, has two umpires in place for this spring, but needs more to be able to pull off the season.

James Meek, Umpire in Charge for the league, has issued the following statement:

Hello Central Whidbey Community!

I hope this letter finds you well.

I am reaching out on behalf of Central Whidbey Little League to seek assistance with our umpiring needs for the upcoming season.

Our league provides a positive and structured environment where young athletes can develop their skills, sportsmanship, and love for the game.

However, to ensure a successful season, we rely on dedicated volunteers and community members to help officiate our games.

We need umpires to support our teams and keep our games running smoothly.

Whether you are an experienced umpire or someone willing to learn, we welcome all levels of involvement.

Training and resources can be provided for those new to the role, and any time you can contribute would be greatly appreciated.

We currently have two committed umpires. However, we have softball, and minor and major league baseball needing umpires.

Your support would significantly impact our players, coaches, and the overall experience of our league.

If you or someone you know is interested in assisting with umpiring, please contact me at (360) 320-3717 or through Facebook Messenger.

We truly appreciate your consideration and any help you can offer.

Thank you for your time and support keeping youth baseball and softball a thriving part of our community.

We look forward to hearing from you soon.

Best regards,

James Meek

Darren Crownover, American Badass, closes out his law enforcement career with a dramatic animal rescue. (Photo property Island County Sheriff’s Department)

Out of the patrol car and on the school bus.

Capping a stellar career in law enforcement, Darren Crownover made his final “out of service” call Monday.

A Lieutenant with the Island County Sheriff’s Department, he and wife Kelly (a longtime 9-1-1 operator) had a huge positive impact on Whidbey Island and its occupants over the years.

They also were my traveling companions during daughter Veronica’s senior season of softball at Coupeville High School — a year that ended with a run to the state tourney.

Now, with Darren following Kelly into “retirement,” the couple are off to Texas, where Darren will be driving a school bus while (possibly) humming “bad boys, bad boys, whatcha gonna do when they come for you?”

I wish all the best to the entire Crownover family (which also includes son Nickolas) and not just because they bought me my weight in M & M’s.

Though that certainly didn’t hurt!!

Wednesday was for the fan club.

Coupeville High School senior Madison McMillan signed her letter of intent to play softball for Edmonds College, in an event which gave her many supporters a chance to hail their favorite slugger.

Family, friends, coaches, teammates and classmates, all on hand to celebrate a major milestone for an amazing young woman.

One of Coupeville’s brightest athletic stars has landed her next gig.

While Madison McMillan still has two more seasons of high school sports to finish, with basketball underway and softball beckoning in the spring, the CHS senior has signed a letter of intent to play college ball afterwards.

The power-hitting third baseman is slated to join the softball program at Edmonds College, with the Tritons making the announcement on their Instagram page.

Madison McMillan, granddaughter of Gordon McMillan and Nancy Conard, is a standout student and athlete who also happens to be a remarkable young woman in all aspects.

As part of a tight-knit group of female athletes who have played together since elementary school, she is one of the foremost faces of the CHS Class of 2025.

McMillan has had a major impact on the volleyball court, as a hoops star, and as a diamond dandy, with her playing both high school and travel ball in the latter pursuit.

She and her fellow seniors sparked the Wolf volleyball program to its best season in school history this fall.

With McMillan and company working as a unit, CHS was undefeated until the final day of the season, went 18-2, won league and bi-district titles, and captured 4th place at the 2B state tourney.

While the Wolf warrior sparkles in every one of her pursuits, softball is the sport where she has arguably had the biggest impact.

Whether drilling home runs over the fence, turning on the wheels to get an extra base in crunch time, or whipping a frozen rope across the field to nail a runner, McMillan is, as they said in O Brother, Where Art Thou, “bonafide.”

Edmonds hit a grand slam with this signing.

A class act.

Aaron Lucero is your new CHS head softball coach. (Photos by JohnsPhotos.net)

The new leader is a familiar face.

Coupeville High School assistant softball coach Aaron Lucero is moving up to claim the top spot with the Wolf diamond program.

He replaces Kevin McGranahan, who stepped down after a nine-year run when he and wife Justine moved off-Island earlier this year.

Lucero’s hire was announced Thursday by CHS Athletic Director Brad Sherman and will be official once approved by the school board.

Lucero chats with Chelsi Stevens during a game last spring.

Since he and wife Jess moved their five children to Coupeville from the sports hot bed of St. Louis, Aaron Lucero has been a key member of the local coaching community.

He worked alongside McGranahan with the Wolf softball program, while also helping lead very-successful Central Whidbey Little League diamond squads.

The owner/financial advisor at Terra Firma Wealth Management, Lucero has also worked extensively with the Coupeville Booster Club and the Community Foundation for Coupeville Public Schools.

He will be stepping into a prime position, with the CHS softball squad capable of returning every player from last year’s team, including daughter Ava, from a team which went 14-5.
