She’s getting some big props.

Coupeville grad Sarah Wright was honored Monday by the Southern Athletic Association, tabbed as the SAA Softball Player of the Week.

The former Wolf, now a junior at Sewanee: The University of the South, had a huge day Sunday, ripping holes in the encroaching fog with lasers off her bats.

Wright bashed a double, came around to score, then hammered a game-tying three-run homerun as the Tigers stunned highly ranked Birmingham-Southern College.

Sewanee, which trailed 5-1 entering its final at-bat, rallied to win 6-5.

Wright, a prairie supernova, was a four-sport star, Valedictorian, and Homecoming Queen during her days at Coupeville High School.

She also sparked a full-on riot by an unruly group of hungry seagulls when she went running through an Eastern Washington parking lot waving tasty sandwiches in both hands while killing time at the state softball tourney during her high school senior season.

Legendary.

Wright was one of 264 Tigers across 21 SAA-sponsored varsity sports to earn the honor.

Sewanee’s softball team set a program record, with 11 players landing on the honor roll.

Through two pandemic-altered seasons on the diamond, Wright has shown she can be as successful in college as she was in high school.

The former Wolf hit .407 during her sophomore campaign, collecting 11 hits, including two doubles, while driving in five runs.

Through 26 career games at Sewanee, Wright sits with a .309 batting average, 68 at-bats, 21 hits, including two home runs and two doubles, and 12 RBI.

She has walked nine times, come around to score six times, and anchored the Tigers with her quick glove and explosive throwing arm behind the plate.

Sarah Wright brought her manners with her to college.

The Coupeville High School grad was honored Monday, named to the Southern Athletic Association Winter/Spring All-Sportsmanship Team.

Now a freshman at Sewanee: The University of the South in Tennessee, Wright is a key member of the Tiger softball team.

Before the season was stopped by the COVID-19 pandemic, she had started all 16 of her team’s games at catcher.

Wright led the team in home runs and RBI, and was second in batting average, hits, and total bases.

Sewanee had athletes honored for basketball, swimming and diving, baseball, softball, lacrosse, golf, track and field, and tennis.

Back in her Coupeville days, Wright was the CHS Class of 2019 Valedictorian, starred for Wolf softball, basketball, volleyball, and soccer teams, and once came dangerously close to eating a worm to entertain her teammates.
