Bathed in a brief bit of sunshine, Wolf slugger Taylor Brotemarkle heads off to whack some base hits. (David Somes photos)

The crack of the bat, the … appearance of the sun?

That strange, glowing orb in the sky has popped up once or twice this season on the prairie, amid the usual wind gusts and rain spatters.

Once such time was this past Thursday, allowing the Coupeville High School softball squad plenty of time to dismantle visiting Darrington in a doubleheader sweep.

Along for the ride was photo whiz kid David Somes, who delivers the pics seen above and below.

The Wolves are off to a 7-1 start on the season.

Allie Powers prepares to unleash total freakin’ destruction.

Chloe Marzocca resists the temptation to go golfing.

“These girls have nothing to hang their heads about.”

Playing inspired ball all the way, from the first pitch to the final hit, the Island Vipers 14U softball team ended summer play last weekend with a bang at the Diamonds Fastpitch Tournament in Lynnwood.

“The girls showed the fight they have all year, but this time they had to dig deep,” said head coach Grant Van Dyke.

“I am so proud of all of them and can’t wait to see what they do next year.”

Vipers leadoff hitter Haylee Armstrong spent most of her weekend getting on base.

With a shuffled lineup to cover for players absent due to family trips (Ava Lucero) and big sister’s weddings (Chelsi Stevens), the Island crew stretched their final two games to extra innings before finishing with a second-place trophy in the silver division.

“We had every girl contribute to the weekend,” Van Dyke said. “(Pitcher) Adeline (Maynes) took care of the opposition bats like she always does, and our bats got hot.”

The Vipers played five games over two days, winning two and coming within a pitch of upending the Spartans in a 6-5 thriller in the finale.

That game literally came down to a two-out, two-strike, walk-off hit down the line, showcasing how the game can be decided by an inch here, an inch there.

Capri Anter had a hot bat in Lynnwood.

Fresh off a strong summer, the Vipers send their players back to their respective Whidbey Island schools, with Wolves, Falcons, and Wildcats all represented on the roster.

Next time around, the travel ball program will grow, as they plan to field both 16U and 14U teams going forward.

Weekend stats:

Shea Allison — Two singles, one double, two walks
Capri Anter — Five singles, one walk
Haylee Armstrong — Five singles, two walks
Jolene Coleman — Two singles, one double, one walk
Emma Cushman — One walk
Lena Heggenes — Three singles, one walk
Adeline Maynes — Two singles, one home run
Kennedy Strevel — Three singles
Cameron Van Dyke — One single
Sydney Van Dyke — One double, four walks
Abby Whitney — One single, one walk
Sophie Ziegler — Two singles, two doubles, two triples

They lit off some fireworks.

Closing with three straight wins this weekend, the Island Vipers 14U softball squad captured a title at the Fun in the Sun tournament in Kent.

The sluggers, who boast players from all three Whidbey high schools, swept both games they played Sunday in bracket play to clinch the crown.

A 7-1 win over a squad from Sammamish sent the Vipers to the championship game, where they nipped the Washington Rage from Moses Lake 8-7.

The hot finish came on the heels of a third-place finish in pool play, as Whidbey held its own with top-ranked rivals.

After opening losses to squads from Woodinville and Seattle, the Vipers drilled a team from Puyallup 8-0 to start its turnaround.

Sunday’s title tilt started off with a bit of a clang, as Whidbey fell behind 4-0.

But the Vipers never faltered, rallying time and again.

“The players did a great job of embracing never being out of the fight and kept chipping away and playing aggressive softball,” said assistant coach Aaron Lucero.

“Chaos on the base paths mixed with timely hitting and effective small ball.”

With two outs and the potential winning run at third, Jolene Coleman came up huge, lacing a hard-hit shot past the shortstop to plate her teammate and capture the crown.

The Vipers awarded three game balls, one to Coleman for her timely base knock and one each to the pitching and catching duo of Adeline Maynes and Ava Lucero, who survived the heat and thrived.

“All my players know my rock and marshmallow speech and they were all rocks,” Aaron Lucero said.

“To come from behind from a pretty good hole in the championship game to winning on a walk off speaks volume of this team and the character that they have.

“I’m extremely proud of them. It was truly an entire team effort.”

Weekend stats:

Shea Allison — Three singles, one double, two walks
Capri Anter — One double, one triple, five walks
Haylee Armstrong — Four singles, three doubles, two walks
Jolene Coleman — Six singles, one triple
Emma Cushman — One walk
Lena Heggenes — One single, one triple, two walks
Ava Lucero — One single, two walks
Adeline Maynes — Three singles, one walk
Chelsi Stevens — One single
Cameron Van Dyke — One double
Sydney Van Dyke — One double, one home run, two walks
Abby Whitney — One single
Sophie Ziegler — Three singles, two doubles, one triple, one walk

Tryouts this Saturday:

The Vipers are looking to “round out their roster and add a second team to the club.”

Tryouts for both 14U and 16U teams will be this Saturday, July 13 at 10 AM at Rhododendron Park in Coupeville.

All girls ages 12-16 are welcome, though they can’t be older than 16 as of Dec. 31, 2024.

If your player can’t be at Saturday’s tryouts, you can set up a private tryout by contacting coach Grant Van Dyke at Islandvipers@yahoo.com.

They started with a bang but couldn’t keep the explosions coming.

The Coupeville High School varsity softball squad jumped on host Forks early Saturday, but then got picked apart by last year’s state runner-up.

In the end, the Wolves, who start three 8th graders and two freshmen, fell 11-2 to the Spartans.

The rare loss drops Coupeville to a still superb 7-2 on the season heading into a busy week.

CHS travels to Friday Harbor Tuesday for a key Northwest 2B/1B League tilt, then gets back on the bus Friday and Saturday for non-conference treks to Blaine and Granite Falls.

This is a stretch of the schedule which will test the Wolves, something Coupeville coach Kevin McGranahan embraces.

“Young team against a state tourney #2 veteran team (today),” he said. “We learned a lot about ourselves and will make the adjustments.”

Coupeville came out swinging aggressively Saturday, in the 150th game McGranahan has coached at the school.

Taylor Brotemarkle reached base with two outs in the top of the first, followed by Madison McMillan belting a two-run home run to get her squad on the board.

Unfortunately for the Wolves, that was the end of their scoring.

With 8th grade whiz kid Adeline Maynes pitching well in the circle, CHS held on to its lead until the bottom of the third, when Forks pushed three runs across.

A six-run explosion in the fourth by the Spartans was the difference, but Coupeville hung tough and forced their hosts to play the full seven innings to get the win.

McMillan led the way at the plate, adding a double to her dinger, while Jada Heaton collected Coupeville’s other hit on the afternoon.
