The committed.

Two weeks and counting.

The start of fall sports practice looms on the horizon (actually it’s only nine days away if you’re a football player — they begin Aug. 16), but some athletes are already hard at work.

Coupeville High School’s weight room is open Monday-Friday for SST (Sports Specific Training), and a broad range of Wolves or Wolves-to-be have taken advantage.

Monday morning brought a blast from the past, as well, as former CHS/CMS coaches Ryan King, Dustin Van Velkinburgh and Brett Smedley swung by to give CMS football guru Bob Martin a helping hand.

How much do you want it?

If you want to walk the walk, and not just talk the talk, now is the time to put in work.

With school ending Thursday, the chance to put in off-season workouts will be very available for CHS/CMS students.

The school’s weight room will be open every Monday-Thursday from June 13 (that’s this coming Monday) to July 28, with one exception — the 4th of July.

“That would be anti-American,” said Coupeville Athletic Director Willie Smith with a chuckle.

Hours of use are 8-9:30 AM and 5-6:30 PM and athletes will be able to make use of the school’s SST (Speed Strength Training) program.

You know athletes at King’s and ATM will be in the weight room.

Are you, the future of Wolf Nation, ready to put in the same level of commitment and work?

Yes, yes you are.

Matt Hilborn

Matt Hilborn

With a new high school football season ahead of us, let’s take a look at some of the young men who will play for Coupeville High School for the first time this fall.

He’s quick, but loves to hit.

Wolf freshman Matt Hilborn, who first picked up the game as a middle schooler, enjoys the crunch of helmets on shoulder pads that makes football such an explosive game.

“I like the sport because it is a contact sport,” Hilborn said. “I started because I thought it would be fun to play with my friends, also because I like tackling and I like to learn and always love to get better at the game.

“I enjoy working with teammates and my coaches.”

Of course, being quick enough not to get hit as often by the other guys is also a plus.

“I think that my strength is speed,” Hilborn said. “I would like to work on becoming a better wide receiver and a better line backer.

“Become better at the game and my positions,” he added. “Also, I would like to help my teammates.”

Away from the gridiron, he enjoys playing XBox and hanging out with friends, while also finding time to put in work in the weight room and play baseball.

He was on a Babe Ruth diamond squad in Oak Harbor this spring, continuing a love affair with a game sparked by his dad Steve, who has put in time as a baseball coach.

His parents have been instrumental in the development of the young Wolf, both as an athlete and, more importantly, as a young man coming into his own.

“My dad has made a big impact on my baseball career since I was only six or seven; he always helped my pitching and hitting,” Hilborn said.

“Another person that has helped me is my mom (Wendi),” he added. “She helps me with school and she is always there when I need something.”

JR Pendergrass

Football never ends.

The season may be done for 99% of players across Washington state (unless you’re on one of the teams playing for a state title this weekend), but off-season workouts continue.

Those who want to be the stars of 2015 are working now.

Add Coupeville High School junior JR Pendergrass to that list.

Coming off his best season as a Wolf, he’s in the weight room and well on his way to preparing for his final year in the red and black.

While he lettered this season, he wants to be a key player as a senior.

“I want to lead my fellow teammates,” Pendergrass said. “To be there for my coaches when they need me, wherever they need me and work with everyone who supports Coupeville football and help us to a championship.”

The two-way lineman (center and defensive line) backed up current senior Carson Risner for much of the year.

With his departure, a starting spot would be up for grabs, something that helps drive Pendergrass during his workouts.

He first picked up football at age eight (“I wanted to try a new sport”), and has greatly enjoyed his two seasons in a Wolf uniform.

“I like being a part of a team like Coupeville that treats each other like family,” Pendergrass said.

In school, he tabs U.S. History with Ryan Grenz as his favorite, and he enjoys time spent with his friends and girlfriend.

That group, along with his family, have provided him with a faithful cheering section during his time at CHS.

“My mom and dad have supported me and even coached in my past years,” Pendergrass said. “Everyone involved in the Coupeville football community has been extremely nice and it really is like we all are one big family.

“When I moved here I was welcomed with open arms.”
