Wolf mat master punches state ticket

Coupeville High School is sending a wrestler to state, despite not having a program of its own.

Wolf senior Jaje Drake, who trained and traveled with South Whidbey this season, went his own way for the postseason.

Accompanied by CHS football coach Bennett Richter, he claimed 3rd place in the 215-pound weight class at regionals Saturday at Adna High School, propelling him to the big dance.

Drake will participate at Mat Classic XXXV at the Tacoma Dome Feb. 16-17, and CHS will give him a state tourney send-off Thursday said CHS Athletic Director Willie Smith.

On the mats at Adna, Drake, who was also an All-League football player for Coupeville this fall, won three of four matches.

The Wolf ace pinned Alejandro Cruz of Raymond, fell just short against Matthew Kenney of Rainier, then rebounded with two more wins.

Drake closed regionals by pinning Marcus Lynch of Ilwaco and Blake Roberts of Rainier to clinch his trip to Tacoma.

He’s the first Wolf wrestler since current CHS assistant football coach Alex Turner also qualified for state as a senior, back in 2019.

Adin Wollum of North Beach won the 215-pound title at regionals, pinning Kenney in the final bout.

Forks won the 2B team title, holding off Rainier 182.5-121, while Darrington finished third.

LeVine grapples her way back to state tourney

She’s heading back to the big dance.

Former Cow Town student Izzy LeVine, the last link in a family which includes three Coupeville Sports Hall o’ Fame inductees, qualified for the state wrestling tourney in Arizona for a second-straight season.

Micky and Jae’s rampaging lil’ sis finished second in her weight class at sectionals this past weekend, while her Casteel High School squad won a team title.

Izzy’s lone loss at the postseason rumble came in the final, where she faced the #2 ranked grappler in the state.

Overall, Casteel is sending eight wrestlers to state this season.

The cap to the high school mat campaign is Feb. 15-17 in Phoenix.

Wildcat grapplers rule the mat

Give ’em the crown.

Powered by two individual champions, the Oak Harbor High School girls’ wrestling team captured a 3A/4A Sub-Regional team title Saturday on its home mats.

The 3A Wildcats, who are coached by Mike Crebbin, husband of longtime Coupeville volleyball guru Toni Crebbin, topped an 18-team field to net the trophy.

Schools in action hailed from KingCo and WESCO, which are 4A conferences, and the Northwest League, which features 3A schools.

Oak Harbor finished with 221 points, edging out Lake Stevens (209) for the crown, with Glacier Peak (176.5), North Creek (158), and Mount Vernon (157) comprising the rest of the top five.

‘Cat grapplers finished first in the 100-pound and 235-pound weight classes, with Julia Gonzalez and Olivia Hudson, respectively, going undefeated to win those titles.

OHHS teammates Genesis Egli (125), Annabelle Suto (135), Zoe Beeman (145), and Lotoaigaola Tupu (235) all finished 2nd in their weight classes, with Khryza Castillo (115) claiming 4th place.

Oak Harbor now advances to Regionals, which will be held at Monroe High School.

There be fools in Arizona.

Young women keep stepping to Coupeville alumni Izzy LeVine on the wrestling mat, and they keep ending up in the same place.

Face down, being pinned by the former Terror of Cow Town.

Izzy, younger sister of Coupeville Sports Hall o’ Famers Micky and Jae LeVine, now lives in a hotter climate, which matches her run as a grappler.

She’s now 39-2 on the season after sweeping four matches by pin at the She Devil Classic in Page, Arizona Saturday, claiming yet another tourney title.
