Part of the turnout for Copenhaver’s farewell photo.

Coupeville soccer came out to bid adieu to one of its leaders Thursday.

Little kids in their jerseys mingled with high school players, fans and parents as the community staged a farewell photo for Dr. Jim Copenhaver. By the time they were done, they had jammed the stands at Mickey Clark Field.

It’s not surprising since Copenhaver, who is moving himself, his wife Suzanne and children (including CHS star Jeremy) to New Hampshire to be closer to his wife’s family, has been the backbone of youth soccer in the community.

In between his duties as an emergency room physician, he has coached hundreds of young players with the Central Whidbey Soccer Club.

Tirelessly donating his time, not only to coach, but to do a bit of everything — down to mowing and lining the fields — he has been indispensable in the effort to built a love for soccer from the ground floor up in Coupeville.

And, while he’ll be missed by many, as seen by the turnout his farewell photo garnered, what he helped nurture here in town will continue to thrive. He helped get things going, and others will carry on his work after he departs.

Copenhaver’s legacy will continue to be seen every time a child kicks a soccer ball in Coupeville, and that’s not a bad legacy to leave behind.

Rachel Wenzel (far right), seen here with fellow track stars (l to r) Anna Bailey, Heni Barnes and Marisa Etzell, closed her track career with a PR Thursday.

It was a chance she didn’t expect to get, so Rachel Wenzel made it count.

After qualifying for tri-districts at the last second, the Coupeville High School senior capped her track career by setting a PR in the javelin Thursday at King’s.

Her throw of 88 feet, nine inches was nearly a foot longer than she had ever thrown in her three years of competing in the red and black and placed her 14th.

Wenzel’s performance was one of just two by CHS athletes in a final Thursday, as the two-day, 25-team tri-district meet has most of its finals Saturday.

Joining her Thursday was junior Josiah Campbell, who placed 13th in the triple jump. The top six advance to state.

Based on their times in the prelims, hurdler Madison Tisa McPhee (100 and 300 hurdles) and both the 4 x 100 and 4 x 200 girls’ relay teams are on target to make the cut for Cheney.

Complete results:

GIRLS:

200 — Makana Stone (8th) 27.35

100 hurdles — Madison Tisa McPhee (2nd) 16.51

300 hurdles — Tisa McPhee (4th) 49.03

4 x 100 — Jai’Lysa Hoskins, Marisa Etzell, Sylvia Hurlburt, Stone (2nd) 51.61

4 x 200 — Tisa McPhee, Hoskins, Hurlburt, Stone (3rd) 1:47.83

4 x 400 — Kirsten Pelroy, Hoskins, Etzell, Stone (8th) 4:16.40

The mere thought you wouldn't get your car washed Saturday is enough to set Tony Maggio off.

The mere thought you wouldn’t get your car washed Saturday is enough to set Tony Maggio off.

You, and you alone, have the ability to make Tony Maggio happy.

And by you, I mean you, and you and you over there in the corner and you trying to ignore me and you sneaking out the back door while I’m talking. All the you’s!

What the Coupeville High School football guru wants is a little bit of love, and a lot of dirty cars, to help his guys raise funds for attending summer football camps.

The place: Whidbey Island Bank in Coupeville.

The time: Saturday, May 18 starting at 10 AM.

The reason: an epic car wash staffed by Wolf players and coaches.

Your reasons for not showing up: not valid.

"That's right. Fear the Wolf!"

“That’s right. Fear the Wolf!”

Not everyone goes airborne the same.

Some glide up in the clouds while others thunder through the paint.

But regardless of how you get up there, you have to have some hops to be successful in basketball. Unless you’re Larry Bird, and then you can fashion a Hall of Fame career while rarely leaving the ground.

Small news flash: none of the basketball players at Coupeville High School are Larry Bird.

But whether they’re getting air time or getting down and dirty on the floor, the young Wolves are rapidly showing impressive signs of growth during their SWISH season. The hard work they put in now should benefit them once next winter rolls around and they take the court clad in the traditional black and red.

Because, in basketball, you can only truly fly high when you’re willing to put in the ground floor work first.

Left to right, Austin, Christine and dad Mike Fields. P.S. -- he's a pro who taught them the game.

Left to right, Austin, Christine and Mike Fields. One family, three sensational golfers.

You don’t need depth when you have quality.

Coupeville High School has exactly two golfers, and both are headed back to the state tournament just like last year.

When Wolf senior Austin Fields tees off in Lake Spanaway May 21-22, it will be the third time he’s played in the 1A state tourney. For little sister Christine, a CHS sophomore, it will be her second trip.

Christine earned the berth by shooting an 85 to finish 6th at tri-districts Tuesday, while Austin strolled in with a tie for 20th on the boys’ side after carding an 86.

Madisen Bentley of Life Christian and Ryan Wallen of Blaine were the meet medalists.

As Lone Wolves, the Fields siblings trained and traveled with Island rival South Whidbey and three of Christine’s “teammates,” — Rosie Portillo, Jenna Kaik and Hannah Cotton — also earned trips to state, though all trailed Coupeville’s best.

No Falcon boys made the cut.

Austin has back-to-back Top 40 finishes at state, while Christine tore up the course during the second day of play in 2012 and finished 8th overall in her Big Dance debut.
