Makana Stone is getting faster, but the competition is getting fiercer.
Shattering the school record in the 400 for the third straight meet, the Coupeville High School sophomore made it around the oval at the Cascade Conference championships in 59.65 seconds Thursday.
It was the third-fastest time by a 1A runner this season, but not quite enough to win a title, as King’s Anna Parker threw down a time of 58.86.
Parker and Stone trail just Maya Jackson of Northwest (58.71), with the potential for all three sophomores to face off at state in Cheney at the end of May.
Stone’s performance in the 400, and her third-place finish in the 200, topped the Wolves as they competed in the 1A/2A league for the final time.
Coupeville, the smallest 1A school in the state, is moving to the 1A Olympic League next season.
The Lakewood boys and King’s girls claimed team titles at the eight-team league meet.
Up next for the Wolves is the district meet at Lynden Christian May 14 and 16.
