Emily Licence has had a pretty good freshman year.
A two-sport Coupeville High School star (cheer and softball), she solidified herself as one my favorites the day she helped kick-start Cookie Wars 2014 by bringing me home-made cookies after a softball game.
We could talk about her slick fielding at third base for the state tournament-bound Wolves.
Her coach, David King, compared her glove work after one game to that of former Major League Baseball great Omar Vizquel, and it’s true. She has a knack for coming up with the big play.
Or, we could discuss Emily’s bright, sunny personality, which shines through both as a Wolf cheerleader and when she crams the stands in support of her fellow CHS athletes.
But let’s admit the truth — they were really good cookies. And I am easily swayed by sugar.
So, today, as Emily celebrates her birthday, two days before she plays on the biggest stage of her still-young sports career, I wish her a really happy day and the best of luck.
You came in like a pro, Miss Licence, you carry yourself with grace and class and you know when to gently bribe the press. That’s impressive.
Never change, cause you’re already awesome.
