The Spartans made a good stand, but still got chomped by the Wolves.
Riding a hot streak at the service stripe Saturday, the Coupeville High School JV volleyball squad polished off host Forks in straight sets, running its winning streak to three matches.
With the 25-10, 25-18, 25-18 non-conference victory, the Wolves improve to 5-1 heading into a major showdown next Thursday, Sept. 29 at La Conner.
Saturday’s rumble, coming after a long bus trip out to bat country, was a battle between two fairly evenly matched squads.
“Forks was good!” said Coupeville coach Ashley Menges. “We focused a lot on what we could control, and it worked out well for us.”
The spiker guru praised her entire team, offering a few extra props for a couple of standouts.
“We had a lot of service runs, especially from Grier (Mooney) and Teagan (Calkins), which we’ve been working hard on becoming a consistent service team,” Menges said.
“Issabel (Johnson) did great working hard and filling in in the middle position, which we’re all so appreciative of.”
As the Wolves prep for the upcoming showdown with their biggest Northwest 2B/1B League rivals, Menges, like varsity coach Cory Whitmore, is working on making sure her players talk to each other while on the court.
“Our focus moving on is upping our communication throughout the entirety of the play,” she said. “As well as all the way through the game.”
