Some days you just can’t buy a goal.
Friday was one of those times for the Coupeville High School boys’ soccer squad, which had good looks but couldn’t get the ball all the way into the back of the net in a 1-0 loss to host Evangel Classical.
The narrow defeat, coming in a “non-conference” game against a new Northwest 2B/1B League rival, drops the Wolves to 3-2 on the season.
CHS will have a chance to bounce back next week, when it travels to La Conner (3-2-1) Tuesday, September 29, before hosting Evangel (3-0-1) in a rematch Thursday, October 1.
The Wolves have already bounced La Conner one time this season, bashing the Braves 5-0 a week-and-a-half ago.
Next week’s games will be the first to count in the league standings, with Coupeville playing nine official conference rumbles in the race to decide playoff berths.
Friday afternoon the Wolves faced a foe they had never played before, as Evangel, a private school based in Marysville, joined the NWL this season for boys’ soccer, giving the league 10 teams for the sport.
The Raggants — their mascot is a mythical creature which resembles a rhino with wings — punched in the game’s only score less than 60 seconds into play, then clamped down on defense for the next 79 minutes.
While Coupeville couldn’t find the goal it needed to knot things up, Wolf coach Jim Kunz came away pleased with the play of some of his young guns.
“I was very impressed with defender Lincoln Wagner’s performance,” he said. “If the ball entered his area he owned it.
“Mal Chapa also had a great game as winger playing up the line and had a few shots.”
With the quick turnaround, the Wolves will look to get right back on a winning streak in a matter of days.
