The rematch did not go according to plan.
Facing off with visiting Lopez Island Monday, the Coupeville High School girls’ soccer squad fell 4-0, an unfortunate reversal of fortune after battling the Lobos to a 2-2 tie the first time around.
Unable to find any openings in a fairly tight defense, the Wolves slip to 2-3-2 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 3-4-2 overall.
Jasmine Ader’s squad gets a chance to bounce back Thursday, however, when it travels to Bothell to square off with Providence Classical Christian, which sits at 1-5 in conference action.
Lopez broke a scoreless tie with a goal off of a booming free kick in the game’s 14th minute, then tacked on another score in stoppage time right before halftime.
Coupeville’s defense, which was under fire for most of the game, fought back hard.
Spearheading things was Lyla Grose, who chased down several would-be scorers, upending one a step or two in front of the goal, while drilling a ball off of another’s stomach to discourage her from thinking about shooting ever again.
Unfortunately, the Wolves had trouble mounting any offensive rallies of their own, with Lillian Ketterling, Lucy Schisel, and Hazel Goldman putting shots on goal, but the Lobo defense unwilling to break.
With the game still at 2-0 heading into the final 10 minutes, the visitors broke things open with two more goals in a two-minute span.
Even in defeat, the Wolves stayed plucky until the end, with freshman goalie Finley Helm making a sweet sliding save last in the game, while Olivia Hall was constantly in the thick of things, fighting for every loose ball until the final whistle.
