The growth is real.
After narrowly missing the playoffs last season, the Coupeville High School boys’ soccer squad is right in the thick of things, currently holding down third place in the 10-team Northwest 2B/1B League.
With the top six teams advancing to the district playoffs, the Wolves, who can finish anywhere from second to fifth, are postseason-bound this time around.
And while a razor-thin 2-1 loss Wednesday at Providence Classical Christian prevented the Wolves from moving up a slot, at least for a day, the future remains bright.
With one game left on the regular season schedule, a home game October 28 against two-time defending state champ Orcas Island, it’s all about seeding now.
Wednesday’s rumble in Bothell was a tense affair, with Chayse Van Velkinburgh netting his sixth goal of the campaign on a penalty kick.
Unfortunately for the Wolves, PCC had two answers, just enough to escape with the victory and net three points in the standings.
Now, it’s time to move on and prep for Orcas, which has played in five consecutive 2B/1B state title games, winning three of them.
“Close game (today),” said Coupeville coach Jim Kunz.
“Ref made some questionable calls, but this is where we’re at. One game left. Then we’ll know our placement.”
