Luke Merriman

Luke Merriman: Legendary. (John Fisken and Ann Merriman photos)

He is the legend that keeps on giving.

A sharp-shooting, slick-dribbling, nattily-dressed hoops sensation who glides through the world, sly grin on his face.

Luke Merriman, who celebrates a birthday today, is the real deal — a genuine superstar who is genuinely one of the nicest guys you’ll meet.

He’s a killer on the hard-court (as long as he can keep his bones intact) and willing to put up with my shenanigans off-court, which is a sweet combo.

Few high schoolers would step up and not only accept, but seem to mostly enjoy, the hubbub created by me publishing an infamous photo of said player going to town on a hotdog (during the middle of a game).

Even as the photo was republished just about everywhere, becoming our own little Cow Town version of viral, Luke just did his version of McConaughey, sliding by with a slightly amused “Alright, alright, alright.”

Mr. Merriman is a cool customer all around, and this upcoming basketball season should be his moment to shine even brighter than ever.

With a wide open path to varsity hoops glory opening up in front of him, Luke, who will be a junior, should have considerable freedom to rain down three-point bombs alongside his fellow Wolf sharpshooters.

After a mass graduation and recent defections, CHS will have only two varsity players returning and a limited number of last year’s JV players around to move up.

Merriman could be the team’s secret weapon, though, a born shooter who lives to slay from distance and cocks an eyebrow when people start talking about the school record for treys in a single boys basketball season.

It’s 62, courtesy Brad Sherman in 2002-2003, if you’re wondering.

So my advice to Merriman?

Enjoy your birthday, bask in the cake (though check for any wandering paparazzi before putting fork to mouth), then get back to perfecting the rotation on your shot.

This is your season, your time to rise up and write your legend.

Happy birthday, Luke. Now go get ready to shred folks.

Dalton Martin, track star and video phenomenon. (John Fisken photo)

The Deer Whisperer has returned.

Dalton Martin earned plenty of kudos during his athletic career at Coupeville High School, which is understandable when he’s the only Wolf in 116 years to win three throwing medals at the same state track and field championships.

But now, as he prepares to take his discus and head off to Everett Community College to pursue his college dreams, he’s making his biggest impact with a series of short, highly-enjoyable videos.

Got 17 seconds?

You can see both of his low-key encounters with very-trusting Whidbey wildlife, while getting 17 seconds away from the barrage of politically-related screaming and treason that’s sweeping the nation.

I call that a win-win.

His newest video:

And, in case you missed it, video #1:

Will Butela (left) and Mike Duke? Legendary.

Will Butela (left) and Mike Duke? Legendary.

“Am I having a sports stroke right now?”

“Is he still not killing people?!?!”

“We left early one time, because they did not deserve us!”

“They should have refunded your beer, because no amount of beer was going to make that game entertaining.”

Will Butela and Mike Duke were supremely entertaining back in their “old school” Coupeville High School days, and nothing has changed.

When the dazzling duo are not making national commercials, they are crazy busy pumping out some of the best podcasts in the biz.

Yes, it’s basically the two of them sitting around yammering — bouncing from DuckTales to Dan Marino to Making a Murderer to beer in the first two or three minutes alone in their latest masterpiece — but that’s gold, Jerry, gold.

Episode #22 just went up today, which means you may need to take the rest of the week off from work and devote yourself to catching up.

Your boss will understand.

To dip your tootsies in the mad mayhem, skip over to:

Fun Brothers. A Podcast. Ep 22- We Don’t Know About You, But We’re Feeling Taylor Swift.

Mitchell Losey (John Fisken photo)

Mitchell Losey, ready to bust some heads. (John Fisken photo)

(Kristin Hurlburt photos)

Losey (and an epic sandwich) shares a moment at a track meet with Wolf mom Eileen Stone. (Kristin Hurlburt photos)

He’s the Easy Rider.

For the last four years, Mitchell Losey has made it look easy, cruising through life with a grin on his face and a low-key attitude that is refreshing.

The Coupeville High School senior, who celebrates a birthday today, has had an impact both on the football field and the track oval for the Wolves, continuing a proud family tradition that stretches back several generations.

Through it all, he has never been one to thump his chest and demand his time in the spotlight.

Losey has been the ultimate team warrior, a guy willing to get down in the trenches and do the hard work, the dirty work.

His teammates and coaches know what kind of player he is, and accord him respect, and so should we as fans.

Mitchell has been the very definition of solid, on and off the field, and he has represented the family legacy very well.

He may be handing over the keys to the kingdom to younger brother Shane and getting ready to head off into the real world, but he’ll always be a Wolf first and foremost.

Parents Scott and Melissa should be proud of the solid young man they have raised.

Mitchell is a class act (and he stars in one of my favorite photos ever snapped) and I want to wish him all the best on his cake day.

Happy birthday, Mr. Losey. Keep on keepin’ on.

Jared Helmstadter, the only Class of 2016 athlete to play a sport in all 12 seasons of his prep career. (John Fisken photos)

Jared Helmstadter, the only CHS Class of 2016 athlete to play a sport in all 12 seasons of his prep career. (John Fisken photos)

Wolf three-sport athletes

Row 1 (l to r): Tiffany Briscoe, Lindsey Laxton, Gabe Eck, Nicole Lester. Row 2: Hunter Smith, Allison Wenzel, Lindsey Roberts, Ty Eck. Row 3: Lauren Grove, Cameron Toomey-Stout, Jordan Ford, Kyla Briscoe. Row 4: Hunter Downes, Lauren Rose, Sarah Wright, James Vidoni.

It takes dedication to be a three-sport athlete in high school, and a little luck.

Injuries, drivers ed, club sports, specialization, an unwillingness to play basketball (the only winter sport Coupeville High School offers) — there are a lot of things which can keep the modern athlete from living out what used to be routine.

So, we want to take a moment to honor the 17 Wolves (nine girls, eight boys) who kept the flame lit in 2015-2016.

Cause they may be a dying breed.

Of the four years Coupeville Sports has existed, that number is the smallest we’ve seen.

After we had 18 in 2012-2013, we topped out at 23 the next year, then slid to 20 and now 17.

But, maybe we’re jumping too fast to conclusions, because the core of the three-sport athlete group is young and appears to be deeply committed.

There are six freshmen and seven sophomores on the list.

Also, if you take the 9th graders out of the equation, nine of the 11 are repeat three-sport athletes.

Only two are seniors, which ties ’12-’13 and ’13-’14, while being down from a high of five 12th graders who went out strongly last year.

Jared Helmstadter exits on top, the only member of the Class of 2016 to have played a sport in all 12 seasons of his high school career.

Meanwhile, fellow senior Jordan Ford, having just arrived on the scene, went 3-for-3 in his one year at CHS.

The complete (I believe) list of Wolf three-sport athletes in 2015-2016:
