Chan gets the call!!

Drew Chan’s high school baseball career is not done just yet.

While his final season wearing the red and black for Coupeville High School ended Thursday with the team banquet, the Wolf senior lives on to play at least one more day.

That’s because the second baseman has been tabbed to play in one of the feeder games for the All-State series. He’ll suit up Thursday, May 30 at Joe Martin Field in Bellingham, and, depending on his play, could be picked to play in Yakima June 8-9.

The All-State series draws it players from the senior class each year and features players from every part of the state and every classification, from 1B to 4A.

Chan’s feeder game features players from Northern Washington 1A and B schools.

As spring sports wind down in Coupeville, we find ourselves with extra photos.

What to do with some of those shots that never made it onto the page so far? Stick ’em away in an (electronic) drawer or publish ’em?

For once, the Cascade Conference paid attention.

Breaking a trend recently of snubbing Coupeville High School athletes in all sports, league coaches picked two Wolves as First-Team All-Conference baseball selections Monday. Overall, five CHS diamond men were honored.

Junior pitcher Ben Etzell and junior outfielder Kurtis Smith were tabbed to the first team, while junior infielder Morgan Payne earned Second-Team honors. Junior catcher Jake Tumblin and sophomore pitcher Aaron Curtin received honorable mention selections.

Little 1A school Coupeville went 10-12 in the just-concluded season, beating every team in the 1A/2A league at least once with the exception only of defending 2A state champs Archbishop Thomas Murphy.

The Wolves pushed ATM to the limit in an instant classic at home, however. That looks even more impressive now that the Wildcats will play in the state semifinals this weekend against Tumwater, two wins away from capturing back-to-back titles.

Not surprisingly, ATM dominated the voting, with shortstop Trevor Morrison being named league MVP. The Wildcats one-two pitching duo of seniors Zander Clouse and Derrick Mahlum joined Etzell as First-Team pitchers.

South Whidbey’s Tom Fallon was picked as the coach of the year.

Whether it be baseball or softball sluggers, Central Whidbey’s rising stars are developing a love for the long ball.

Toss in a deep commitment to other, equally-important, if slightly less-exciting facets of the game such as defense and smartly calling a game from behind the plate, and you have the basis for long-term success.

On the scene to catch the moments in living color is ace photog Joe Lippo, who let us use these photos and will be writing some guest columns as the seasons play out.
