No one hangs their head after this one.

Playing the best baseball team it will face all season (and one of the best in the state, period) in defending 2A state champ Archbishop Thomas Murphy, Coupeville High School played with passion, grit and aggressiveness Tuesday, putting a scare in the Wildcats.

And while they weren’t able to hand ATM (13-0 in league play, 14-1 overall) its first Cascade Conference loss, the 8-4 score doesn’t begin to fully reflect how closely played this game was.

A day after a sub-par performance in Granite Falls, the Wolves returned home and reignited the spark.

Whether it was Drew Chan and Aaron Curtin whacking key hits or right-fielder Kurtis Smith teaming with pitcher Aaron Trumbull and catcher Jake Tumblin on a perfectly-timed wham-bam throw out of a runner headed home, Coupeville was not backing off.

Facing a team that routinely invokes the ten-run rule and runs off its opponents after five innings, Coupeville pushed hard until the last out. Literally.

Having loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh on consecutive singles by Chan, Morgan Payne and Tumblin — with the fleet-footed Tumblin beating a laser throw by a step on an infield single — the Wolves forced ATM to go to its bullpen and bring in the big gun, Zander Clouse.

The flame-throwing stud got Curtin to hit a foul ball a mile high for one out, then ATM turned a game-ending double play off of a hard chopper by Kyle Bodamer, who went flying into the bag at first, coming up inches short of keeping the rally alive.

Even though the loss dropped Coupeville to 5-9, Wolf coach Willie Smith was pleased with the effort and burning desire to pull off the upset.

“This is the best we’ve played them in two or three years at least,” he said. “Them bringing in their big guy to close was a sign of respect, that we were worrying them.”

The Wolves came out aggressive, hacking away for runs in each of the first three innings.

Coupeville banged away for two in the bottom of the first, with Tumblin and Curtin each connecting on superb RBI singles, then the Wolves used a hail of bunts to tack on another run in the second.

Bodamer beat out a chopper, then Korbin Korzan executed a sacrifice bunt so well he ended up beating out the throw to first.

Wade Schaef dropped another bunt, but this time the ATM starter picked it up, whirled to make the play at third and, instead, threw it into left field, allowing Bodamer to scamper home.

Coupeville’s final run came in the third, when Tumblin was hit by a pitch, stole second, then scored on a single by Curtin.

With Aaron Trumbull mixing up his pitches and speeds on the mound, the Wolves stayed close the entire game.

One brief mental error, when two outfielders deferred to each other and a ball dropped between them, hurt Coupeville, however, allowing ATM to break through for its only big inning of the afternoon, a four-run third. That turned a 3-2 lead into a 6-3 deficit.

The newly fired-up Wolves will get right back at it Wednesday, when Granite Falls comes to the Island for the second game of a three-game series.

Curtin is scheduled to draw the start, injured third-baseman/pitcher Ben Etzell has been cleared to return to play, and the first pitch is set for 4 PM.

The highs of the early part of the season have been replaced by the lows of a slump.

A Coupeville High School baseball squad that strung together four straight wins, making a habit of coming back to win just when all hope seemed lost, now just seems a bit lost.

After absorbing an unexpected 8-0 loss at cellar dweller Granite Falls Monday, the Wolves have lost five straight and find themselves sitting at 5-8 overall, 3-8 in Cascade Conference play.

With undefeated league leader Archbishop Thomas Murphy coming to the Island this afternoon for a make-up of a rained-out game, a resurgence in confidence is badly needed.

“We came out flat again,” said Coupeville coach Willie Smith. “We are not in a real good place right now, so hoping after a long heart to heart the boys will come out differently and get back to playing a lot more inspired.”

Against the host Tigers, the Wolves generated just five hits, with Kurtis Smith collecting two, including a double. While Josh Bayne and Jake Tumblin pitched effectively in spots, they failed to match the Granite duo of Riley Larson and Xavier Denke.

“Their pitcher was not anything special, we just had poor approaches at the plate, too passive,” Smith said.

The Wolves will get ample opportunity to reignite their season, with back-to-back home games.

After ATM (13-1, 12-0), the defending 2A state champs, who are currently ranked second in the state polls, comes to town, Granite Falls will visit Wednesday. Both games start at 4 PM.

So is Wade Schaef.

So is Wade Schaef.

Upset of the Century, take two.

After being rained out Friday, the Coupeville High School baseball squad will get another chance to shock unbeaten league leaders and defending 2A state champs Archbishop Thomas Murphy.

The schedule-makers have slipped in a makeup home game into an open slot on Tuesday, April 16, with the first pitch set for 4 PM.

Weather forecasters show it being partly sunny and 48 degrees in Coupeville that day.

It will make for a busy week for the Wolves, who kick off a three-game set with cellar dwellers Granite Falls today. The Wolves hit the road Monday and Friday, with the Tigers coming to Whidbey Wednesday.

It will be quite a contrast for Coupeville (5-7 overall, 3-7 in Cascade Conference play) as ATM is 12-1, 11-0 and Granite Falls is 2-9, 2-7.

"Raining cats and dogs? I am not amused with your metaphors, good sir."

“Raining cats and dogs? I am not amused by your metaphors, good sir.”

Screw May flowers. April showers are a pain in the patootie.

Yesterday was blue skies and sun, with some wind, and Whidbey Island could have hosted a bevy of sporting events.

But, there was only a tennis match scheduled, and that fell victim to the wind, which made conditions on the Port Townsend to Keystone ferry too rough for Chimacum to travel over to Whidbey.

Today, when there were a full four home events planned (baseball, softball, girls’ tennis and boys’ soccer), guess what?

Yep, back to the never-ending rain and back to ripping up and rewriting the Coupeville High School spring sports schedule for schedule guru Kim Andrews.

Tennis went first, then baseball, then softball.

Soccer, however, plays on in the rain with, probably, very few fans in attendance. If you’re brave, JV starts at 4, varsity at 6 and the opponent is Lakewood.

Protect the record!!

There comes a time when you have to play for something more than just yourself.

There comes a moment when you have to play for me.

Today is that day for the Coupeville High School baseball team.

Thanks to one of those insane quirks of the schedule, four different Wolf teams — baseball, softball, girls’ tennis and boys’ soccer — all play at home today, all virtually at the same time.

Which is just super-less-than-dandy for parents like Donna Bailey, who have daughters who play different sports.

Softball with McKayla? Tennis with McKenzie? Run back and forth down the street?

For me, I choose one and stay there. And today it’s baseball which gets my attention (Korbin Korzan has baseball fundraiser candy for me), as they play the final game in a three-game series with Archbishop Thomas Murphy.

Unbeaten in league, defending 2A state champs ATM.

A team which must lose to preserve my streak.

For, you see, I am 6-0 this year with Wolf baseball and softball. Neither team has failed me yet, whether it be spectacular comebacks in the rain or offensive explosions where the balls are bangin’ off the outfield fence.

Now, beating ATM would be huge. Bigger than the mammoth win over Cedarcrest last week, when that team was unbeaten in Cascade Conference play.

But, the fact they did it once, proves they can do it again.

The opponent doesn’t matter. Wolf Nation can rise to the top at any time.

And now is that moment.

If not for yourselves, than for me.
