You find your positives where you can.

For instance, the Coupeville High School baseball team did NOT get no-hit Wednesday.

It came awfully close against “the best pitcher we have seen this year,” but Aaron Curtin ripped an RBI single to deny Archbishop Thomas Murphy hurler Zander Clouse a no-no.

Unfortunately, with just that single, which knocked in Morgan Payne, who had reached on an error and stole second, to their credit, the Wolves weren’t able to keep pace with the host Wildcats, falling 11-1 to the defending 2A state champs.

Now 5-7 overall, 3-7 in Cascade Conference play, Coupeville will wrap up the brutal part of its schedule Friday, when they welcome ATM to the Island.

That will cap a six-game stretch against Cedarcrest — which was unbeaten in league play until the Wolves beat them last week — and ATM, which is still perfect at 11-0. Up after that, three game sets against cellar dwellers Granite Falls and Sultan.

Even in the loss, Wolf coach Willie Smith saw positives. Just not enough of them.

“It was an interesting feel to the game,” Smith said. “We were more focused and had much more energy, but made too many ill-timed errors and didn’t get the little things done to put us in a position to win.”

Ben Etzell got the start on the mound for Coupeville and pitched decently, but couldn’t match the numbers put by Clouse, who whiffed nine in five innings.

With two days to plan before the series finale, Smith and his brain trust will scheme ways to upend ATM the same way they did Cedarcrest and knock-off their second unbeaten power.

“In spite of the two lopsided losses, we feel like we can compete and if we play like we are capable of playing, pull one out on Friday,” Smith said. “If nothing else, we are determined to give them a tough one!”

Am I missing something here?

If you scan the newest state polls at washingtonbaseballpoll.com, you find that Hall of Fame coach Lem Elway thinks that Nooksack Valley is the 10th best 1A school playing right now.

A 5-5 Nooksack Valley squad.

A 5-5 Nooksack Valley squad that LOST to a 5-6 Coupeville squad earlier this season, blowing a six-run lead in the sixth.

A Coupeville squad that handed 2A Cedarcrest (11-2) its only Cascade Conference loss of the season.

Want to get even more confused? Go check out ScoreCzar.com, where their computer, “Debbie,” is in charge of the rankings.

“Debbie,” who I clashed with during football season, has Nooksack Valley 45th in 1A and Coupeville … 54th out of 66 teams.

Somehow, a 1-7 Chimacum squad that has been outscored 85-42 is “stronger” than the Wolves.

Plus, a 3-6 Mt. Baker, a 2-6 Seattle Christian, a 1-5 Riverside and a 3-6 Kettle Falls, just to get started. Oh yes, and Coupeville is ranked a hair (a very slim hair) ahead of South Whidbey, a team it drilled twice.

Apparently losing, if you do it with enough style, matters more than winning to some folks.

They are the best for a reason. Well, a whole lot of reasons.

Archbishop Thomas Murphy is the defending 2A state baseball champs, they’re unbeaten in the Cascade Conference this season (10-0) and they have the best player in the league in all-world shortstop Trevor Morrison.

Which is just going to make it sting more if Coupeville beats them in either of their two remaining games (Wednesday in Everett, Friday on the Island).

Before you laugh, remember, Cedarcrest was unbeaten last week, as well, before the Wolves toppled them.

That big win wasn’t in the books Monday, however, as ATM kicked off the three-game series with a 13-2 victory, improving to 11-1 overall, while dropping Coupeville to 5-6, 3-6 in league play.

The visiting Wildcats came off the bus swinging hot, dropping four-run rallies in each of the first two innings and driving Wolf starter Aaron Curtin from the mound.

Wade Schaef came in from the outfield to replace him and struck out five over five innings, tossing 84 pitches, to give Coupeville a fighting chance.

The Wolves, if nothing else, forced ATM to play a full seven innings, scoring once in the fourth and again in the fifth to keep the 10-run rule from going into effect.

The first run came via Cole Payne, who whacked a pinch-hit single and then scampered home later on an ATM error. The Wolves added a second run on an Aaron Trumbull RBI ground-out which scored Ben Etzell.

Etzell collected two base knocks to pace Coupeville, while Jake Tumblin, Joey Edwards, Korbin Korzan and both of the Payne brothers (Morgan and Cole) chipped in with a hit apiece.

It was a beautiful day to play ball.

While the final score of Monday’s Coupeville vs. Archbishop Thomas Murphy baseball game wasn’t the most pleasant for Island fans (more on that later), the weather was sun-a-riffic and the action was intense-a-riffic.

Spring Break is almost in the books.

School starts back up in Coupeville Monday, and, with the return to the classroom comes a full-bore return to the athletic fields (if it stops raining).

The weather forecast shows sun tomorrow, when CHS kicks off a busy week with three home games in the same day.

Baseball, softball and boys’ soccer are all set to play host, with the Wolves starting a three-game diamond set with league leader Archbishop Thomas Murphy. On the other side of the road, the softball sluggers get a second crack at Island rival South Whidbey.

Both games throw their first pitch at 4 PM.

Across town, the booters will look for their first win of the season against King’s. JV kicks off at 4, varsity at 6.

Girls’ tennis returns Tuesday, with a trip to Granite Falls. Home matches are set for Thursday (Chimacum) and Friday (Lakewood).

Track and golf get back in the swing of things Thursday with trips to Sultan.
