Everyone scored.
That’s about the best thing you can say about Friday night’s season finale for the Coupeville High School JV boys’ basketball squad.
Playing an aggressive, quick, three-point lovin’ team with deep depth and three guys six-foot-four or taller to clog the middle, the Wolves had few answers for visiting King’s. Not even a second quarter rally could save Coupeville, as it fell 75-29 to finish the season at 3-17.
But there was the positive of having all eight players get into the scoring column, topped by Joel Walstad and Anthony Bergeron, who each banged for six. Jared Helmstadter and Dalton Martin chipped in with four apiece, while Oscar Liquidano rumbled for three and Isaac Vargas, Wiley Hesselgrave and Josiah Campbell each tossed in a bucket.
Campbell’s was a particular beauty, as the junior out-ran the field on a breakaway, went airborne, juked out two defenders and slipped the ball up and in a mere moment before the closest Knight just barely missed blocking his shot.
Toss in Walstad and Martin nailing long treys, with Walstad banking one of his three-point bombs off the glass first, and Helmstadter rifling a pass cross-court to hit Hesselgrave in mid-stride for a bucket, and there were moments.
Unfortunately, there weren’t enough, as Coupeville fell behind 20-4 after one quarter, effectively ending the game before it began.
The Wolves briefly rallied in the second quarter, with Helmstadter scoring all of his points and making the pass of the night, but then King’s rained down six three-pointers in the third quarter to quell whatever hopes Coupeville might still have harbored.
