There are no words…

Hunter Hammer was put on this planet to make my job easier.

I swear, the offspring of Mark and Linda Hammer, and big bro of Hailey Hammer, is gold, pure gold for sports bloggers who want to get a lot of page views without having to do a lot of work.

He may not be playing basketball and throwing shot-put balls through the air for Coupeville High School anymore, but his photos are the gift that never stops giving.

Right after I wrote a feature on Iris Ryckaert, a foreign exchange student who is doubling up this winter as a Wolf cheerleader and volleyball player, I got a tremendous rush of page views from her home country of Belgium.

Shortly thereafter, I posted several pics of young Mr. Hammer — in one he was on a tricycle, in another modeling classy Christmas outfits, etc. — and noticed an odd trend. Belgium was crazy for Hammer Time, as they spiked the numbers on that article as well.

So, for Belgium. For basketball fans. For connoisseurs of fine photos everywhere. The one true Page Hit King … HUN-TER HAM-MER!!!!!!!!

God bless you and your shameless love of cameras, boy!

Why a photo of Hunter Hammer? One, every middle school b-baller wants to grow up to be a hard court beast like Mr. Hammer. And two, why not? He is the Page Hit King! (Shelli Trumbull photo)

The fall sports season still rages at the high school level, but down on the middle school grounds, the sound of basketballs thunking hardwood has replaced the thwack of football helmets and shoulder pads.

Head coach Bob Martin and (unpaid but highly productive) assistant Ryan King welcomed 24 boys to the first day of Coupeville Middle School basketball practice Monday, and, in the interest of appeasing grammas everywhere, if you scroll down a bit, you’re going to see all 24 names, in easy-to-read bold print even.

The 7th and 8th grade boys’ squads begin play Wednesday, Nov. 7, and their season goes through Dec. 12. Middle school girls hit the courts after that, as CMS splits up its basketball seasons.

Games tip-off with JV action at 3 PM, followed by varsity at 4 PM. The 7th grade squads play first on Mondays and Tuesdays, while the 8th grade netters lead off on Wednesdays and Thursdays.

The complete middle school schedule (which can and probably will change at a moment’s notice):

Tue-Nov. 6 @ Lakewood
Wed-Nov. 7 host Northshore
Tue-Nov. 13 @ Langley
Mon-Nov. 26 host King’s
Wed-Nov. 28 @ Granite Falls
Wed-Dec. 5 host Sultan
Mon-Dec. 10 @ Northshore

Drew Chan, one of the Wolves who put their body on the line every game last season. (Shelli Trumbull photo)

Last season wasn’t fun.

A new coach, an almost completely new team, a key player lost to injury at the start of the season, a serious lack of numbers on the bench — life wasn’t especially easy for the Coupeville High School boys’ basketball team.

I’ve seen this before, though, and it can get better.

Two decades ago, during Randy King’s first year as coach, he was handed virtually a freshman team and they took some horrific beatings on their way to a similar 0-20 season.

I sat in that same gym and watched as a jerkwad rival coach had his team do a full-court press until the final buzzer, rolling past 100 points on the scoreboard as the Wolves struggled to even get the ball in-bounds.

But that team, led by Virgil Roehl, who, as the Wolves best player, took a non-stop licking and kept on ticking, never stopped. With players like Ryan McManigle, Brandon Huff, Kit Manzanares and Boom “Best Last Name Ever” Phomvongkoth, the Wolves got better, stronger, faster, tougher and they hurt some people over the next three seasons.

And it can, and will, happen again.

The Wolves have talent, with big men Nick Streubel and Caleb Valko, hard-charging Carson Risner and the triple-threat of Drew Chan, Gavin O’ Keefe and Aaron Curtin. Injuries have haunted Kole Kellison, but there is always hope, with youngsters like Joel Walstad and Aaron Trumbull on the way.

That core group is strong, they will succeed — but they need help.

They need a bench, so they don’t have to play entire games with six players. They need support. They need whiny-ass classmates to suck it up, stop bitching and, if they really, truly believe they’re ballers like they say, to put their bodies on the line, instead of blowing hot air.

It’s easy to slag those who are busting their humps. It’s easy to move to another town, while your daddy stays behind, to play for a “better” team. A team that is going to have an awkward moment or two if and when it next plays Coupeville.

There are many excuses. Many reasons to take the winter off. Some are legitimate. Others not so much.

It’s simple.

The male population of Coupeville High School needs to step up and take a collective gut-check over the next three weeks. Man up, turn out for basketball and help Chan, Streubel and Co. to continue to build something the town will all look at and be proud of, or shut the hell up.

Every blowhard thinks they can sink a twenty-footer or make an outlet pass between defenders. Whining about how you’d play if only the “team was any good” is weak and it makes you look like the scared little boys you really are.

Either do it or don’t do it.

But if you don’t do it, don’t piss all over the ones who are in there fighting. And don’t jump on the bandwagon later when they succeed without you.

From left, CHS baseball/tennis player Ben Etzell, Special Olympics hoops star Lucas Etzell, CMS b-ball player Nick Etzell and the best athlete in the family, soccer/track sensation Marisa Etzell.

The fastest typing fingers in all the land belong to Kristi Etzell, who won the “Run My Photo!!” contest by replying approximately 17 seconds after I posted the article in which I offered the contest.

The woman is a very fast reader, her eyesight made strong by months of using Isagenix.

Either that, or she has a video camera hidden in my house and is monitoring every thing I type.

Wait, a voice from the wall behind my computer just said, “That’s silly!”

Now I’m really suspicious…

Will any current CHS hoops player take Taya Boonstra’s spot as the best photo bomber on the team? We can only hope. (Shelli Trumbull photo)

The fall sports season still has some time left on the meter, but the one true sport is banging on the window, screaming to be let in.

Three weeks from today (Monday, Nov. 12) practice begins for basketball, and, safely ensconced in the gym, fans will be able to go back to wearing shorts without watching their knees turn into frostsicles.

Imagine it: the oppressive rain and cold, slashing wind that has been my personal bane for the past week and a half, during football games and soccer rumbles, gone.

Toasty, toasty indoor sports.

The Wolf girls will have a new head coach, with longtime local b-ball guru David King stepping up to replace the departed Jackie Bykonen. His partner in crime, Amy King, returns to take the reigns of the JV squad.

Nearly half of last year’s team (Katie Smith, Cassidi Rosenkrance, Taya Boonstra, Grace LaPoint and Shelby Kulz) graduated, but that leaves the door wide open for younger players such as Monica Vidoni, Miranda Engle and Kacie Kiel to make a run for varsity playing time.

On the boys side, only Mitch Pelroy graduated (though Taylor Ebersole moved and Kole Kellison’s lingering injuries leave him as a question mark), as Coupeville, most likely led by Drew Chan, Nick Streubel and Carson Risner, tries to bounce back from a winless first season under coach Anthony Smith.

And, as a bonus, just to see if anyone reads this article, the first CHS or CMS basketball player to say “Run my photo!!” will get their picture posted here on coupevillesports.com later today or tomorrow. Seriously.

Let the countdown(s) begin!
