Runners can enjoy spectacular Whidbey Island views while racing to raise money for a safe graduation party for the Coupeville High School class of 2014.

The second annual Race the Reserve, which takes runners through trail and road courses which traverse Ebey’s Landing National Historic Reserve, is set for Saturday, Aug. 10.

Actually three races in one (a 5K, 10K and half marathon are all offered), registration is open through race day.

Cost is $20 (5K), $30 (10K) and $45 (half marathon) and you can register now at http://racethereserve.com/.

Event day registration and check-in begin at 6:30 AM, with the races kicking off from the Coupeville Elementary School (6 S. Main Street) at 9 AM.

The event, put together by parents of the Class of ’14 (volunteers include Wendy McCormick, Nanette Struebel, Monica Felici, Melanie Kooch, Marci Ameluxen, Lorene Norris, Tamara Oakes, Cindy Van Dyke, Kristi Etzell and Aimee Bishop), offers runners panoramic views of the Olympics, the Straight of Juan de Fuca, Mt. Rainier and Mt. Baker.

The race is also seeking sponsors, who will be featured on the web site and race t-shirt, as well as having the chance to advertise at the race site.

Businesses already in the fold include Kapaw’s Ice Cream, Christopher’s on Whidbey, Prairie Logos, MJC Copy Center and Rosenkranz Productions.

fishTime to work the water.

If you’re 12 or younger and have a hankerin’ for the fishies, grab your fishing pole and head up to Oak Harbor Saturday, July 6 for a free kids fishing derby.

Hosted by the Oak Harbor Yacht Club, it’s technically a North Whidbey event. BUT, if Central Whidbey kids go up there and beat the world (fish for Coupeville pride, baby!!), then all will be well with the world.

For more info, take a gander at the snazzy poster perched above.

How convenient, then, that I can offer you a string of glossy Central Whidbey youth soccer photos to survey, with very few words attached to tax your cranium.

The pics are by the world’s busiest clicker, John Fisken. Have a little extra cash and looking for a way to help the youth of Coupeville?

Then take a moment and consider sponsoring the next generation of volleyball players, as they hone their skills in preparation for years of beatin’ the stuffin’ out of the starched shirts at Archbishop Thomas Murphy and King’s.

AAU Pack Attack Volleyball is aimed at girls in grades six through eight, with an eye on preparing players for high school play. The team, coached by Amy Briscoe, has 16 players.

It is currently looking for individuals or businesses who would be willing to help sponsor the team’s attendance at a summer volleyball camp put on by Western Washington University.  Pack Attack would also like to be able to provide scholarships for players whose families can’t afford AAU fees.

If your wallet is hankering to help out, contact Briscoe at 929-7829. If you don’t get her, be sure to leave a message and she’ll return your call.

Different year, same messy result.

33 years to the day Mt. St. Helen’s blew, dust was flying everywhere again.

This time, instead of ash, it was colored corn starch and water, however, as runners in the CES Color Splash Run/Walk were pelted Saturday morning.

In the end, it was just as messy as May 18, 1980, but a lot more pleasant for all involved — many of whom weren’t born when the mountain blew.
