Your groundskeepers at work.

What is this thing called a home football game?

Coupeville High School finds out tonight, as the Friday Night lights go on for the first time at Mickey Clark Field this season, after four straight road games to start the season.

The Wolves (1-3 overall, 1-1 in Olympic League play) face Klahowya (2-2, 1-1) at 5:30 PM, in a battle for sole possession of second place.

With Port Townsend (4-0, 2-0) running wild and Chimacum (0-4, 0-2) sputtering, a win against the Eagles would be huge for Coupeville. The top two teams make it to the playoffs.

In preparation for the festivities, school groundskeepers Mike Lodell and Lincoln Kelley were hard at work this week, getting the field prepped.

Their efforts glisten in the pics above.

Hunter Downes: American Bad-Ass (John Fiskenb photos)

Hunter Downes: American Bad-Ass (John Fisken photos)

Athletic success is pouring Down(es).

Angie Downes has gifted Coupeville schools with three talented sons — Hunter, Sage and the true superstar, Logan — and all three have made big impacts in the last couple of years.

Leading the pack is the oldest brother, the sling-it and wing-it QB (and today’s birthday boy), Hunter Downes.

Already the starting signal caller for the CHS football team before he hit the big 1-6, Hunter is one of those guys who tackles every sport he plays full-tilt, while never losing the grin that shows how much fun he’s having out there.

Relentless on the basketball court, where he beat opponents black and blue while winning the Mr. Hustle award as a freshman, Downes never backed down.

It’s a trait he has carried with him to the football field, where he has shot up the depth chart as he sailed through middle school ball and now on into his second year at CHS.

His day today is busy, I’m sure.

A birthday (the rock outside the school painted in his honor) and another practice as the Wolf gridiron squad prepares for Friday’s home opener, a tilt against Klahowya with huge playoff implications.

So, we won’t take up much more of his time.

But we do want to swing by long enough to say thank you to Hunter, for playing like a bat out of hell, and wish him a great birthday.

Keep kickin’ ass and takin’ names, Mr. Downes.

The second crack at the beast went about like the first one.

Port Townsend is ripping teams apart on the gridiron this season, and Monday’s JV football game went pretty much like Friday’s varsity one did.

But, while the young Wolves fell 44-0 to the visiting Redhawks, the game was close for a good chunk of the way and CHS coach Ryan King came away pleased with a lot of what he saw.

“The boys played really hard,” he said. “We had interceptions and fumbles our boys caused and recovered.

“We were fighting them till the very end.”

Port Townsend carried a 16-0 lead into halftime, then broke the game open in the second half.

While Coupeville didn’t break into the end zone, it came close, with Axel Partida recovering a fumble and bringing it back 65 yards.

He was brought down just short, tackled on the five-yard line.

Freshmen running backs Chris Battaglia and Teo Keilwitz ripped off solid yardage, while fellow ninth grader Matt Hilborn recovered a bad snap and turned it into a first down for CHS, while also having “a really good night defensively.”

King also praised the play of his offensive line of Matt Stevens, Ryan Labrador, Jake Pease, Josh Robinson and Dane Lucero.

Senior Jordan Ford is piling up stats on both sides of the ball.

Stats never stay the same.

While Friday’s game — a 52-0 loss to Port Townsend, the 8th-ranked team in 1A — didn’t allow for the Coupeville High School football squad to make big additions, there were some changes.

The gang’s all here.

Well, if “here” is Ellensburg, it was true.

Saturday afternoon brought college football to the forefront once again.

Taking advantage of it, a pack of Coupeville fans headed East to see three former Wolves face off on the gridiron.

Former teammates Nick Streubel, Josh Bayne and Jake Tumblin reunited for the first time at the college level, with Streubel’s Central Washington University squad knocking off Simon Fraser 40-7.

Tumblin and Bayne didn’t go down without a fight, however, as the two freshman combined for five tackles and six assists for The Clan.

Bayne had three tackles and three assists (and got half of a tackle for loss), while Tumblin had two tackles and two assists.

The duo will meet back up with the lineman who used to open running paths for them when the two schools play Nov. 6 in Burnaby.

Win streak snapped: Meanwhile, off in in Dillon, Montana, another former Wolf saw his team’s run of success momentarily halted.

Montana Western and Mitch Pelroy fell 10-9 to Carroll College, ruining the Bulldogs Homecoming and snapping a seven-game winning streak that had dated back to last year.

Pelroy recorded a tackle from his defensive back position, but Montana Western (3-1) stalled out time and again on offense, netting just three field goals.
