The destroyer of souls, the one-man wrecking crew … Joel Walstad. (John Fisken photo)

On a night that ended in cold and fog, Joel Walstad burned brightly.

Throwing for three touchdowns, running for another one and picking off two passes while playing defense, the Coupeville High School junior led the Wolf JV football team to a resounding 40-14 thrashing of visiting Granite Falls Monday.

Controlling the flow of the game whether at quarterback or patrolling the secondary, Walstad was electric, teaming up with Anthony Bergeron to bust open a close game early in the second quarter.

By the time they were done, both teams could have walked away and let the fans and cheerleaders go home and warm up a bit earlier without changing much about the final score.

After trading early touchdowns (the Wolves hit first on a short scoring run up the gut from freshman Jacob Martin, who tore off several impressive long runs in the game), Coupeville lit up the scoreboard in a short span of time.

Walstad shredded the Tiger defense for three scores through the air, hitting Bergeron and Cole Payne with scoring strikes, then unloading the knockout punch. Running to his left, he dropped a pass over the defense and hit Bergeron in mid-stride, as the duo ripped off an 80-yard scoring play.

That touchdown came one play after Walstad picked off the rival Granite Falls quarterback in the end zone to blunt the Tiger’s best chance at staging a comeback.

After that, a stifling defense just got hotter, with Xavier Clark stomping through the backfield and manhandling anyone in his way.

Desperate for a big play of their own, the Tigers went repeatedly to the air, only to have Wolf frosh Steven Cope step in front of one of the passes.

Momentarily surprised to see the ball in his hands, he then kicked it into another gear, out-sprinting a pack of Granite Falls players as he hauled butt 75 yards down the sideline for a touchdown of his own.

Up 34-6 at the half and with the loyal fans starting to blow serious steam as the air got crisper, Coupeville tried to keep the clock running, but couldn’t help itself from coming up with a few more defensive gems.

Walstad snagged his second interception, while two other Wolves came close.

Raymond Beiriger had a pick pop out of his hands at the last second and Payne actually made off with one only to lose it when a teammate was called for a penalty.

It was Payne’s second near-miss of the night, as he came within about two inches of hauling in a spectacular one-handed airborne interception early in the game that made announcer Caleb Valko hyperventilate in the booth.

Capping the night, freshman Uriel Liquidano snagged a fumble recovery, and then big brother Oscar, a starting lineman for the CHS varsity who was running the clock upstairs, punched the horn and the stands emptied as the rush was on to find some warmth in the parking lot.

Except for JV coach Dustin Van Velkinburgh who, working the shorts and impervious to weather of any kind, strode up and down the sideline, a huge grin on his face. Cold or no cold, he was taking a moment to bask in the afterglow.

"I must break you."

“I must break you.”

Nick Streubel is coming for you.

Blotting out the stadium lights as he looms over tackle, the Coupeville High School senior has been the spark for the wrecking crew that is the Wolf defense.

Jake Tumblin and Josh Bayne hit like ferocious beasts (plus Bayne is second in the state in interceptions) and CHS linemen such as Aaron Wright and Oscar Liquidano wrap up and plant foes into the turf head-first.

But it’s Streubel, the swim champ who blossomed into a raging tackling machine, who is beating triple teams and scarring the souls of quarterbacks everywhere.

He currently leads 1A players in sacks (fourth overall in all classifications) and tops all 1A linemen in tackles (seventh overall).

As the Wolves (3-2) prep for Friday’s footballageddon against South Whidbey (4-2) — Homecoming kicks off at 7 PM at Mickey Clark Field, with ownership of The Bucket and both teams playoff hopes in the balance — one thing is for sure.

Get in the way of The Big Hurt on a Friday night and your Saturday morning will be filled with aspirin.

"You da man, Sage!!"

“You da man, Sage!!”

Sub plots. Sub plots everywhere.

In a game that matched a coach against his former players, while his current team played to honor one of their player’s dads, whose squadron is deployed over the skies of Afghanistan, the Anacortes Sea Hawks Midget football squad romped to a big win Saturday.

Sparked by their three Coupeville Elementary School stars (Matthew Kelley, Sage Downes and Jake Mitten), Anacortes beat South Whidbey 41-13 to improve to 5-2 on the season.

South Whidbey, where current Anacortes coach Pat Kelley formerly coached, has five CES players on its roster. Trystan Ford, Ben Smith, Dominic Coffman, Isiah Bittner and Evan Johnson all suit up for Langley.

The victory over his former players was a bittersweet one for Kelley, who said “I coached and brought all these kids into the program, so you can imagine my lack of joy this Saturday.”

His current squad was led by Coupeville’s best, as Matthew Kelley busted out a 65-yard touchdown run, while Downes found the end zone after a 35-yard sprint.

The Sea Hawks dedicated the game to Eric Illston, Executive Officer of VAQ-130, the Zappers, who are aboard the USS Harry S. Truman. His son Brock, a fullback, is the Anacortes captain.

Illston sent the following letter to his son’s team, along with one of the photos that runs above:

Subject: RE: Think Pink

Dear Anacortes Seahawks Football Warriors,

I am Commander Eric “Crash” Illston (Brock’s Dad) and I just wanted to let you know that your “THINK PINK” slogan has made it all the way around the world to the VAQ-130 Zappers, the USS HARRY S. TRUMAN, and Operation ENDURING FREEDOM.

This picture was taken over the skies of Afghanistan while I was aerial refueling behind an Air Force KC-135 tanker. I am in the front seat (you can barely see my white helmet) and my Weapons System Officer (call sign “Oscar”) took this picture from the back seat for you guys. This particular mission was 7.6 hours long and supported many troops on the ground.

I tell my squadron often of the “Think Pink” slogan and the great success thus far of the Anacortes Seahawks football team. My squadron mates routinely ask me on Saturday afternoons if the Seahawks won or lost…did they hold onto the ball…and did they play their hardest?

I hope you enjoy the picture. Until then, stick to your blocks, run fast, keep your heads up, and play to the whistle.

THINK PINK, and very respectfully,

Commander Eric “Crash” Illston

Executive Officer, VAQ-130 Zappers

Brock’s Dad.
