It’s going down in Cow Town.

Friday night is the kick-off to a brand new high school sport season, as the Coupeville High School football squad welcomes Bellevue Christian to town for a 7 PM gridiron rumble.

And with a new school year and a new group of seniors, the fight against the Fun Police is officially getting re-launched.

The powers that be killed “The Wobble” last year and they tried to take away the vuvuzela horns, even as several enterprising Wolf students stayed one step ahead of the crackdown.

Now, a loosely-knit group of rapscallions has put the word on the street. Bring the noise and the funk tomorrow night. They can’t catch everyone.

The official press release from the desk of CHS senior Brian Norris reads:

Soo. My fellow Coupeville students I am calling on you to bring every air horn, cow bell, vuvuzela or any other noise maker you may posses to tomorrow’s game. My one horn won’t be enough.

To which I say … let the games begin!

Friday night will be a whole new experience for Caleb Valko.

“I have actually never seen a high school football game from the stands. I’ve always been on the field,” he said. “That should be a nice experience.”

After years of rampaging across the field, the former Coupeville High School gridiron star, who was a team captain as a senior last season on the Wolf squad that reclaimed The Bucket by beating arch-rival South Whidbey on its home turf, is now a fan.

And a very dedicated one at that.

“I’m so excited for this game, almost as excited as if I were to be suited up,” Valko said. “Probably because these are the guys I played with. I want them to succeed and I don’t have any doubts that that’s what they intend on doing.”

Coupeville opens with a home game Friday (7 PM) against non-conference foe Bellevue Christian. This time around the team leaders will be newly-minted seniors such as lineman Nick “The Big Hurt” Streubel and wing Jake Tumblin.

Watching his close friends go into battle without him at their side will be a new feeling for Valko, who, while not as physically big as Streubel, was the mud-stained soul of Wolf Nation.

“The transition of me playing to me watching is pretty difficult,” Valko admitted. “I know I can’t call out names or get somebody back into the game.

“It’s not my job anymore,” he added. “I’m a fan and an alumni now, not a player. It’s the captain’s jobs to keep the players in line.”

Which doesn’t mean he won’t be screaming his head off. Just from a different part of the stadium.

“Coupeville’s gonna kick Bellevue Christian’s ass!” Valko said. “Last year was a fluke. We almost beat them with 18 kids, half JV, last time.

“They better come ready to fight because I guarantee Streubel will be throwing punches and making tunnels for Jake to pass through!”

"Gentlemen, prime your buns!!"

“Gentlemen, prime your buns!!”

Let the paddlin’ commence!

It’s time for the Everett Herald to get nice and irritated with Wolf Nation once again. It’s been too long since we chafed their very souls.

The occasion? The posting of their annual preseason Cascade Conference football poll.

Yes, the very same poll we broke last year, when we mustered enough votes to smack the fans of Archbishop Thomas Murphy and King’s right upside their overly-entitled heads.

Now, we’re already in a wee bit of a hole, down by 29 votes and lodged in seventh place (out of eight teams) as we launch our assault.

No matter. We overcame a bigger climb last year, and held fast when ATM started paying their gardeners and maids to vote.

We are Wolf Nation. We break polls. It’s what we do.

Let the dogs of war loose!

Ready to zip-line...

Ready to zip-line…

Off the side of a mountain.

Off the side of a mountain.

Farewell from The Atomium in Brussels.

Farewell from The Atomium in Brussels.

Korbin Korzan traded in a season of football for the trip of a lifetime.

The Coupeville High School junior, who had packed on the muscle in anticipation of returning to the gridiron for the Wolves, had his plans thrown awry when he met Belgian foreign exchange student Iris Ryckaert.

The duo dated during her time in America, and Korzan chose to skip playing football this year so he could spend a chunk of August and September visiting Ryckaert back in her stomping grounds. While their romance is taking a breather — at least for now — Korzan, also a standout Wolf baseball player, got to experience a whole new world.

His thoughts on the still-continuing trip:

Alright, well, probably the first thing I should get out there is that when I return Iris and I will no longer be in a relationship together.

We have made a mutual agreement due to the fact that she will be in a very fast paced university and I will also be very busy working, doing Running Start and my junior year. We have decided that for now best friends is what’s best for the both of us.

I’m confident our paths will cross in the future. True love always finds a way.

Other than that, Europe has been without a doubt the most amazing experience in my life.

I can’t even choose what I have enjoyed most because everything is so perfect here.

I’ve done so many cool activities from riding a Segway up a mountain, zip-lining off a cliff, seeing the Eiffel Tower, exploring all the old buildings in Paris, 23-mile bike rides, visiting many cities (and a country) on the French Riviera such as Cannes, Fréjus, Saint Raphaël, Monaco, Nice, Sainte Maxime, Saint Tropez…

So basically you name it, I’ve done it.

But when it all comes down to it, my favorite part is just experiencing European life with the best friend I could ever ask for.

One in a million get to stay in a house (a very very nice house) for three weeks for free in Belgium and France and I’m that one thanks to Iris. This has been the best summer of my life and I will never forget it.

Raechel Kundert

Raechel Kundert

Raechel Kundert is a young woman of many passions.

The Coupeville Middle School eighth grader loves walruses, Fall Out Boy, the splendid zombie romantic comedy “Warm Bodies” and playing percussion in the school band.

Oh, and smacking people on the football field.

Standing out from the crowd, Kundert straps on a helmet and pads and lines up at right tackle each day for the Wolves. Not quite a week into her first year on the gridiron, the converted volleyball player is already looking forward to stepping up when the team starts to practice defense.

“I started playing football because I thought it looked fun,” Kundert said. “I’m looking forward to when we start tackling.”

She’s following in the footsteps of Mary Massengale, a 2013 grad who played on the line for the Coupeville High School gridiron gang. And while some opposing players may be surprised to see a girl line up opposite them this season, Kundert says her new team has welcomed her presence.

“My teammates, friends, and family have all been really supportive,” Kundert said. “My mom really didn’t want me to play at first, but because she played football in the 8th grade, too, I was able to convince her to let me play.”

A brown belt in karate, Kundert has the strength to work the line (“I think I’m pretty strong physically”), but wants to get quicker (“I’d like to work on my speed”). In the end, though, her goals are simple and straight forward — “To have fun and to help my team win.”

Away from the field, she credits her family with always providing support (“My parents, my grandparents, and my best friends, here and in Okanogan, have all had a big impact on me”) and has a wide variety of interests.

Musically, she bounces from deadmau5 to Fall Out Boy, with stops along the way for Colton Dixon, Stellar Kart and Alan Jackson. A fan of video games, reading and art, she enjoyed the summer movie “Pacific Rim” and is a dedicated friend to animals of all stripes.

“I love animals, especially walruses, which prompted me to become a vegetarian halfway through my 2nd grade year,” Kundert said.

She did take one small step back, though, when changing her diet, admitting she couldn’t go all the way and commit to a totally hard-core existence.

“I love cheese too much to be vegan!” she said with a laugh.
