Jacob Martin (left) receives a trophy for his play on the football field.

This is far from Jacob Martin’s first time on a football field.

He may only be a freshman at Coupeville High School, but he’ll be entering his sixth season on the gridiron when he joins the Wolves for the opening day of practice Wednesday.

A multi-talented player who hopes to see time at linebacker, safety and fullback, Martin lives for the thunder of the hit, the crunch of helmets.

“I enjoy football, because it’s a contact sport,” he said. “And, for me, it’s very fun.”

A two-sport athlete — he also plays basketball — Martin has confidence in some of his base skills, but would like to continue to get stronger, especially if he wants to see consistent time at linebacker one day.

“A strength I have is tackling and running the ball,” Martin said. “I would like to work on my upper body strength and the linebacker position.

“My goal is to have a minimum of five tackles a game and have at least thirty yards running the ball each game,” he added.

Away from the field, the frosh credits his dad as the prime inspiration in his life (“My dad has worked with me on my schoolwork and he has always been there for me when things get rough”), while enjoying a variety of pursuits.

“I like to fish (salmon, trout) and I like to play the trumpet,” Martin said. “My favorite classes are science and band, my favorite music is country and I enjoy spending time with my brothers.”

Coupeville Middle School coaches and players hold a conference last season. (Marie Fleming photos)

Rumble.

Rumble young man, rumble.

Three days.

It may be hard to believe, but Coupeville High School and Middle School football kick off new seasons this week, with the first day of practice set for Wednesday, Aug. 21. Volleyball, girls’ soccer and boys’ tennis follow on Monday, Aug. 26.

Why do I bring this up now?

Because, for any of a thousand reasons (vacation, being a lazy butt, etc.) the number of players who have actually filed their registration papers is distressingly low.

The reality is, you have to fill out all new forms before starting practice (the ones for summer practices are different), and if you’re not there from the first day, you’re not playing in the first game.

CMS coach Bob Martin has scheduled a 6:00 PM meeting Monday, Aug. 19 (tomorrow!) for players and parents at the middle school practice field (across from Lumberman’s, right next to CHS gym).

The hope is for players to have turned in their registration paper work (which was mailed out to all students) at the school office before the meeting.

Getting registered, and doing it early, can not be stressed more.

The middle school team, which was supposed to have a varsity and a JV last year, only drew enough players for one team, which was predominantly filled with 7th graders.

As the building blocks for the high school team, a sparse turnout puts a crimp in the future plans for Wolf head coach Tony Maggio.

So get your rear in gear and get your rear where it can be issued gear. Make Martin (and the other coaches) happy people.

“I’m excited to see the players that have signed up so far,” Martin said. “But they can’t do it alone.”

"My cake's on fire! Too many candles!! Too many candles!!"

“28 days?!?!? Where are my lucky football-coaching shorts? You tell me where my shorts are, woman!!”

Four weeks.

Yes, I know, it’s a classic Whidbey summer day (damp fog hangs over the land as far as the eye can see), but we are one slim month away from the first game of the 2013-2014 Coupeville High School sports year.

Football is the first to kick-off, with a home game on Friday, Sept. 6. After that, volleyball (Sept. 12) and girls’ soccer (Sept. 17) make their home bows, with the Wolf boy netters (Sept. 18) the last to play in front of their home fans.

Tennis guru Ken Stange is the old pro, while gridiron coach Tony Maggio returns for his second season at the CHS helm. The other two sports welcome new coaches, with select coach Troy Cowan taking the helm of the soccer program, while former player Kirsty Croghan will guide the spikers.

First practice for football is Wednesday, Aug. 21, with the other sports starting up Monday, Aug. 26.

For once, all the Wolf squads have a balanced or better schedule, with tennis drawing the highest percentage of home matches, at a crisp 60%.

Biggest question on the schedule: Friday, Oct. 4 as Coupeville seeks a fifth non-conference football game to fill out its schedule in the final year of a two-year experiment in which the Wolves don’t play big conference schools Archbishop Thomas Murphy, Lakewood and Cedarcrest.

Biggest day on the schedule: Friday, Oct. 18, when football goes for the triple play — it’s Island rival South Whidbey coming to town, it’s Homecoming for CHS and the game is for The Bucket, which is never, ever going back to Langley.

Start crying those salty tears now, Falcon faithful.

And remember, the schedules below are 98.7% correct as of now. Things change, at least with tennis, which is the one fall sport routinely tormented by weather. For daily updates, always go to http://coupeville.tandemcal.com/.

"Any fool can see that!!"

“Any fool can see that!!”

Danny Savalza would weep.

Like all normal people with half a brain, the former Coupeville High School fullback and school spirit shaman, knows, without a doubt, that the Wolves have the best uniforms in all of Washington state high school football.

You can make all the lists that say otherwise that you want. It still doesn’t change the stone cold fact that the red and black rules your eyeballs.

The fine folks at Northwest Elite Index (and they are a good bunch) have compiled a list of what they think are the 10 best uniforms in Washington state over at http://www.northwesteliteindex.com/2013/07/24/ranking-washingtons-top-10-hs-football-uniforms-by-ryland-spencer-and-scott-enyeart/.

Their selections are headlined by a simply stunning grey(!) ensemble (ZZZZZZ … oh, sorry, I just fell asleep after looking at the uniform) from Chehalis.

And while I will give them props for including my alma mater, Tumwater, with their green and gold unis, I look at #7, Graham-Kapowsin, with their melted orange sherbet eyeball-scarrers, and I shudder. Then I feel my breakfast comin’ back up and flee the room.

Now, to be fair, the NEI folks are allowing people to go on Twitter and tweet pics of their favorite uniforms. But since I know using Twitter is a primary cause of hemorrhoids and makes you drool like a rabid dog in the Georgia heat (two out of three doctors agree!), I stay far away from it.

But, if you do tweet, feel free to jump over to the NEI story and then unleash the full fury of Wolf Nation upon their fashion-challenged scribes. Go all Mr. Blackwell on their posteriors, as it were.

Make me proud.  Just don’t complain to me about gettin’ the hemorrhoids.

Wolf QB Gunnar Langvold, makin’ ’em scream and weep for joy in the stands.

Traffic alert for Saturday — be prepared for a logjam around Camp Casey.

The Coupeville High School football squad, led by man mountain lineman Nick “The Big Hurt” Streubel, quicksilver running back Jake “Born to Run” Tumblin and the matinee idol who makes fans shriek like girls at a One Direction concert, quarterback Gunnar Langvold, will be layin’ down the smack that day.

Their opponent for the 11 AM scrimmage will be Lakeside, a 3A school.

The Wolves, who feature an electric group of runners working behind a big, bad line led by Streuble, Carson Risner and Aaron Wright, pounded on 3A Oak Harbor and 2A Sedro Woolley in an earlier scrimmage.
