Now is the time for all Coupeville Middle School boys to look deep into their heart of hearts and embrace the gridiron giant living inside them. Strap on the red and black and become a valued part of Wolf Nation.

Do it for your school. Do it for your town. Do it for yourself.

And remember, if you do play, regardless of what your skill level might be, you will absolutely, positively see your name right here on coupevillesports.com in BOLD PRINT. That’s just how we roll.

And now that you’re giddy and foaming at the mouth at the thought of being a minor celebrity, registration for middle school football is set for Tuesday, Aug. 13 (12:30-3:00 PM) and Thursday, Aug. 15 (4:00-6:00) in the CHS/CMS commons.

All CMS students should have received a Co-curricular Activities packet in the mail, which contains all the info needed for students and parents. If you have any questions, contact coach Bob Martin at rmartin@coupeville.k12.wa.us.

First practice for the season (six games and a jamboree) is Aug. 21.

A once-proud football program is returning with some help from Coupeville High School.

Wolf lineman Anthony Maggio has formally committed to playing football this fall for the College of Idaho, a school that sent four players to the National Football League but hasn’t played a game in more than 30 years.

Maggio, who graduated from high school and Skagit Valley College at the same time this year, will enter school as a junior. He plans to carry a double major in biology and chemistry with a minor in psychology and criminal justice.

A standout two-way player for the Wolves, where he played his senior season under dad/coach Tony Maggio, Anthony is expected to help anchor the line for the Coyotes.

“They said tackle, because I start off quick,” Maggio said. “And by the time they start going against other teams, I might be starting.”

The College of Idaho boasted a very successful football program for more than 60 seasons before dropping the sport in the ’70s. Located in Caldwell, Idaho, the school, founded in 1891, will be coached by eight-year NFL vet Mike Moroski.

Moroski was drafted by the Atlanta Falcons in 1979 and played quarterback for the Falcons, Houston Oilers and San Francisco 49ers. Among his targets — the greatest receiver in the history of the game, Jerry Rice.

Among the alumni the school can claim are basketball Hall of Famer Elgin Baylor, NFL wide receiver R.C. Owens, Academy Award winner Paul J. Smith (Best Original Score for “Pinocchio”) and grocery store founder Joe Albertson.

Mark August 6 on your calendar, cause that’s the day we blow up the Whidbey News-Times’ contest.

Coupevillesports.com readers have already taken down several online voting contests before, with the high point being when we slapped ATM (and their maids and butlers) silly in an Everett Herald contest to pick which football team was the best in the Cascade Conference.

Wolf Nation takes great delight in kickin’ your pampered fanny.

But now we turn our sights on the Canadian-funded rag’s Oh Baby, Baby Cutest Baby Photo Contest.

Submissions are being rounded up through Monday, Aug. 15 at 11:59 AM. At noon that day (and for the next two weeks) votes are tallied and one baby will rise to claim the title, “Highlander”-style.

That baby should be Gracen Joiner, the offspring of former Wolf mega-star Tina (Lyness) Joiner, the beast of the basketball hardwood, and Jason Joiner, a pretty good CHS football player who has to accept he’s the second-best athlete in his house.

So, prime your voting finger, mark Aug. 6 on the calendar, bask in the cuteness that is young Mr. Gracen and prepare to unleash holy hell on the Canucks. It’s the right thing to do.

"My cake's on fire! Too many candles!! Too many candles!!"

“My cake’s on fire! Too many candles!! Too many candles!!”

Can we call him the ol’ ball coach now?

Today marks the 41st birthday of Coupeville High School football guru Tony Maggio, with his second season at the helm of the Wolf program just weeks away from kicking into full-gear.

Let the cake rain down just like the touchdowns Jake Tumblin is going to score for him in the fall.

Then clamps down defensively on the hardcourt.

Then clamps down defensively on the hardcourt.

It’s a busy summer for Aaron Curtin.

The Coupeville High School junior is one of four Wolves who are doing double duty, playing American Legion baseball, then swapping uniforms and playing hoops with their CHS teammates in a summer league.

Senior Morgan Payne, junior Aaron Trumbull and sophomore Cole Payne are the other three guys pulling double duty, while fellow Wolves Kurtis Smith and Ben Etzell are sticking to the diamond.

On the softball field, Hailey Hammer, Madeline Roberts, Madeline Strasburg and McKayla Bailey are busy being awesome, while a group of Wolves led by seniors Breeanna Messner and Amanda Fabrizi recently went to a basketball camp.

Toss in the CHS football, volleyball and cheer squads, which have already had practices, while individual players such as senior gridiron giants Nick Streubel and Jake Tumblin are bouncing from camp to camp, and there seems to be a Wolf playing somewhere every day.

Regardless of the sport, Coupeville’s best are fine-tuning their games, using the off-season to hone their skills as we head towards the 2013-2014 school year.

Let the anticipation build.
