Kwamane Bowens, Wolf? If only!!

Kwamane Bowens, perhaps the best Wolf-that-never-was.

Want to scare ATM good? I mean really make the big, bad “powerhouse” of the Cascade Conference quake in its cleats?

Go build a time machine, go back about five years and convince Kwamane Bowens’ family not to move away from Coupeville. Put the 2012 version of Bowens, a chiseled gridiron beast who runs the 40 in 4.38 seconds and is being recruited by a dozen high-level Division 1 college programs, behind the beefy Wolf line, and the big, salty tears would start flowing.

Bowens, who ran track during his year on Whidbey Island, moved to Virginia Beach in eighth grade, a family move separating him from what could have been.

“Damn good athlete. I miss this guy,” said Caleb Valko, a former classmate who could have been blocking for Bowens from his center position this year if it wasn’t for the twists of fate.

That sound you hear in the other room? That’s Wolf coach Tony Maggio working frantically on that time machine.

For now, they’ll have to content themselves with watching the best-that-never-was-a-Wolf run wild half way across the country. And they won’t be the only ones watching him, as he blows up big time while playing wideout, corner, kick and punt returner for Salem High School.

ESPN Recruiting Nation Football lists Boston College, Illinois, Ole Miss, Vanderbilt, Virginia Tech and West Virginia as just some of the schools vying for Bowens signature on a college scholarship.

It’s his ability to break off huge chunks of yardage that garners much of the interest.

“My strengths are being able to stretch plays and being a play maker,” he said. “I’m exciting with the ball in my hands.

“I can improve on everything, though; I’m always wanting to get better,” he added. “My main goal is to give back to everyone who gave to me.“

While his time in Coupeville was fairly short, he still has friends here and remembers his time here with fondness.

“I talk with some occasionally; some I’m not sure if they remember me,” Bowens said. “I miss everything and everyone. I had so many great memories. I would give the world to get back.”

OK, Maggio, how’s that time machine looking?

Fear Coupeville!! We will unleash the Wolves of war (and they will vote)!!

He’s wearing a wolf shirt, cause he’s awesome like that…

Now that’s how you stuff the ballot box!!

In one day, we, the Coupeville High School football fans, fractured the best polling system the Everett Herald could afford.

The question was “Who will win the Cascade Conference?” and we took the Wolves from 5th place (with five votes) to the stars (76 votes and counting), leaving Lakewood (47), ATM (41) and King’s (37) in our dust. Much big, salty tears are being shed as we speak.

Why, down in Langley, where they apparently don’t have internet service yet, the South Whidbey Falcons are currently sitting on our old number of five votes. Granite Falls, with two votes, is still trying to figure out how they accidentally got those votes in the first place.

As I watched my original plea to mess with the Herald get shared around Facebook yesterday, it made for a delightful day.

The Herald, like the Cascade Conference itself, had no idea of what’s coming. I say we keep at it — 100 votes by the time the Herald writers hit their desks Monday morning and realize what’s happening?

They have to realize — when you massacre the last name of one of our community’s favorite daughters (it’s Taya Boonstra, NOT Taya Boonscara!!) there are consequences.

Let’s mess with the Everett Herald!!

“Suck it, Langley!!”

So, the Everett Herald, a decent newspaper which has a long history of massacring the names of Coupeville athletes (Taya Boonstra became Taya Boonscara and Bessie Walstad is now known as Bessie Wulstud), is conducting a little poll right now.

The question: which football team will win the Cascade Conference this season?

Three of the big boys — Lakewood, ATM and King’s — are battling for the top spot in the poll right now, while the Wolves are currently in fifth place out of eight teams, with 5 of the 132 votes cast. That puts them ahead of Cedarcrest, Granite Falls and South Whidbey (in your face, Langley!!) and within a vote or two of moving past Sultan.

Now is the time for all Wolf fans to let their finger do the talking. Take a couple of seconds, hop to the link here and vote for Coupeville.

Do it for the kids! Or, if nothing else, do it to mess with the people who obliterated Taya Boonstra’s name!!

Simmer down, Beavis!! We got your middle school schedules!!

There are people who follow local sports and then there are true fanatics.

People who follow local sports may recognize names like Bessie Walstad and Nathan Lamb. Hey, they might even know that “Hammer Time” has little to do with a guy dancing in parachute pants, but instead refers to Wolf sophomore sensation Hailey Hammer laying down the smack on her hapless foes in whatever sport she chooses (volleyball, basketball, softball, high stakes rope jumping).

True fanatics, however, are a breed to themselves. These are the people who stalk eBay in the hope of one day bidding for the softball bat Hammer busted last season.

These are also the people who breathlessly await the release of the middle school athletic schedules, because, hey, Michael Jordan was a middle school player at one point and those people who were lucky enough to watch his Airness before he could get off the floor still have a heck of a story.

Am I saying the next Michael Jordan is living here in Coupeville? You never know. Go to a game and take a look.

At least it keeps you off eBay.

Fleming seeks serenity, success on gridiron

Bryce Fleming (80) and his Wolf teammates parade through town, on their way to deliver a beat-down to anyone who would dare face them on the gridiron.

Bryce Fleming is quick. He just needs to be a bit slower at times on the gridiron.

The Coupeville High School junior, who is slotted to play at wing and outside linebacker this season, has speed to burn. A big part of any success he has, though, will come from keeping his temper from burning him right back.

“My temper is something I need to work on,” Fleming said. “I get mad very easy on the field. I need to keep a level head to play at my best.”

If he can find his happy place while wearing the black and red, Fleming could be a breakout threat for the Wolves.

With the switch to the wing-t offense under new head coach Tony Maggio, players with wheels will have an opportunity to shine.

“My main strength as a player has to be my speed. I plan on breaking some big runs this year,” Fleming said. “Another strength I have is my hands. I’m good at catching the ball, which makes me a threat down the field as well.”

Using a mix of runs and quick passes, with a ton of misdirection, the wing-t can be a brutal offense for opposing teams to try and stop. The hope for a young Wolf team is that foes feel that terror early on.

“We definitely have a powerhouse offense this year. Defenses are gonna be afraid of us after our first quarter against (opening opponent) Bellevue Christian,” Fleming said. “Our goal for this season is just like the goal of any team out there. To go 9-0.

“We have the talent. We just need to fine tune everything. Perfect the details,” he added. “My goal as a player is to become the best I can be on the field. I want to play college football. And, by striving to be the best now, I can get there.”

A fan of fight movies, Fleming’s personal pick is “Warrior,” a top-notch film about brothers who are driven apart by their anger, but come to accept each other and find a grudging respect and love while trapped together in the harsh spotlight of the MMA ring.

While his own battles with anger are a lot less severe than those exhibited by Tom Hardy and Joel Edgerton in the film, Fleming and his Wolf teammates hope to reap a similar positive outcome to their stories.

“I believe our program is changing and our opponents aren’t going to be ready for us,” Fleming said. “And we will win!”
