Makana Stone

Makana Stone is the best.

There is no disputing that, after the Coupeville High School sophomore was tabbed as the 1A Female Athlete of the Week for Week 16 of the 2013-2014 school year by the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association.

Stone was honored for back-to-back big game performances in wins over Orcas Island and La Conner.

Against Orcas she pumped in 10 of her game-high 19 points in the first quarter alone, while hauling down 10 rebounds in the game.

Each week the WIAA honors one male and one female athlete in each of Wasshington’s classifications (4A, 3A, 2A, 1A, 2B, 1B). To see the other winners, click over to:

Injuries continue to wreak havoc with the Coupeville High School girls’ basketball program.

Even as senior captain Breeanna Messner returns to action Tuesday at Granite Falls — after missing Saturday’s loss to Mount Vernon Christian after smacking her head on the hardwood a night before — the Wolves will be down several players.

The biggest impact will be felt by the loss of junior post Hailey Hammer, who may be out several weeks after hurting her ankle in the MVC game.

On crutches as recently as Monday, her absence costs the Wolf varsity (5-5 overall, 2-3 in Cascade Conference play) a starter.

“She went to the doctor yesterday and they did x-rays. Not broken. Wants to see her again next week,” said mom Linda Hammer. “They want to make sure she didn’t tear anything. I think she just rolled it.”

“It’s pretty swollen still and it’s bruising nicely,” she added. “I’m hoping she’s only out a couple weeks.”

The Coupeville JV squad has dealt with injuries all season, as well.

Miranda Engle (ankle) never saw the floor before her season was scrubbed, while McKenzie Bailey is currently wearing a sling as she recovers from a nasty fall at Sultan.

Joining them on injured reserve — at least for a bit — are sophomore Jenn Spark and freshman Tiffany Briscoe, who both have taken knocks to the head recently.

Briscoe’s came on the basketball court, while Spark slipped and whacked her noggin on a muddy soccer field in Shelton Sunday while playing with her select soccer team.

Both are expected to be out for at least a week as a cautionary measure.

Locked and loaded.

The Coupeville High School JV girls’ basketball team has become relentless on the defensive side of the ball in recent games.

After holding Archbishop Thomas Murphy scoreless for an entire eight-minute period, the Wolves went and upped the ante in the very next game, refusing to surrender a single point to Mount Vernon Christian for an ENTIRE HALF.

Sixteen minutes of Wolf-administered Hell on Earth.

And how is it done? Take a gander at the photo above and you’ll see how.

Better yet — hit enlarge on the pic and bask in the full fiery glow of Lauren Grove’s laser glare.

The Wolves are coming … and they’re coming for you.

Saturday was a good day for the red and black.

Coupeville High School won three of four basketball games against visiting Mount Vernon Christian (boys varsity, girls JV, boys JV) and almost pulled off the sweep, with the Wolf varsity girls falling by just a bucket.

The most impressive win might have come from the Coupeville JV girls, who held the Hurricanes scoreless for an entire half as they romped to a 25-6 win.

Behind the scenes, when she wasn’t watching the Seahawks playoff win on her phone, team mom Amy Briscoe snapped the pics above, which she was then kind enough to send our way.

Now that’s how you play defense.

Holding visiting Mount Vernon Christian scoreless for the ENTIRE SECOND HALF, the Coupeville High School JV girls’ basketball team romped to a 25-6 win Saturday.

Yes, you read that right. The visiting Hurricanes were unable to put a single, solitary point on the board after halftime, as the Wolves — minus four key players — got big-time nasty.

“Our defense was phenomenal!,” said Coupeville coach Amy King. “We harassed ball handlers, interfered with passes, forced turn overs and yes, they got shots up, but we didn’t allow them offensive rebounds or put backs.”

The Wolves were without McKayla Bailey (softball tournament) and McKenzie Bailey (injury) and swing players Monica Vidoni and Wynter Thorne were held out of the JV game, so they would be fully available to help a varsity team missing one of its captains.

Not that the absences made the slightest difference. Every one of the Wolf girls wearing a uniform chipped in, with Lauren Grove kick-starting the offense with a season-high nine points, outscoring MVC by herself.

“Lauren decided she didn’t want a close game so went on a little rampage,” King said.

With Grove raining down buckets — and getting help from her teammates, as six other girls scored — Coupeville jumped out to a 15-6 lead at the half. Than the Wolves went into lock-down mode.

“Seriously, our defense the whole game was solid,” King said. “The girls playing low on defense moved so well, coming up to help the wings, then dropping back low to protect the key … it was a thing of beauty.

“Emily (Coulter) started aggressively helping and others (Mattea Miller, Jenn Spark, Tiffany Briscoe and Kailey Kellner) followed,” she added. “All while the wings (Carlie Rosenkrance, Lauren, Erin Josue and Aura Corredor) put a hand in every shooters face.

“And you’re crazy if you think anyone could get into the key. Skyler (Lawrence) and Sophia (Jebrail) kept that closed up.”

With Rosenkrance sitting out the third, so she would have a quarter left to make her varsity debut later, Grove took over handling the ball. That took a slight bump, however, when she got in foul trouble.

“No other actual point guard to lead our offense, so I did the most logical thing … put in Emily as point guard,” King said. “She can handle the ball, she knows all the plays and she plays with confidence. Why not?

“She did great and said she never wanted to do that again!”

Kellner and Lawrence backed up Grove on the offensive end, each banging home four, while Rosenkrance, Miller, Jebrail and Spark all tossed in a bucket.

“Total team victory,” King said. “So much fun to watch!!”
