Prepare for war.

Led by hard-nosed senior leaders Amanda Fabrizi and Breeanna Messner (sweet off the court, tough on the hardwood), the Coupeville High School girls’ basketball squad is chock full of warriors ready to rumble.

But, before they get a chance to go toe-to-toe with any opponents, the Wolves have to survive the always-tough (but necessary) training regime of coaches David and Amy King.

So, day one Monday was mainly about survival and bringing enough water to make it through practice.

Traveling photographer John Fisken popped into the gym to capture these photos, the first taste of the season to come.

Mckenzie Meyer, hanging out with cousin Leroy Meyer.

Mckenzie Meyer, hanging out with cousin Leroy Meyer.

Whenever Mckenzie Meyer sings, she remembers her older brother, Kyle.

The Coupeville Middle School eighth-grader, who deftly balances sports, drama and band in a busy life, first found music thanks to her older sibling, who passed away recently.

It will be a link that will always keep the two connected.

“Kyle got me into music and I never let go,” Meyer said. “He taught me to sing, which I find is the easiest way to express my emotion, so without him I wouldn’t be the same and I probably wouldn’t be in band.”

Now in her third year of band, Meyer started on the clarinet, before bouncing over to the saxophone.

Regardless of what kind of music she’s playing, it’s a world she enjoys at all times.

“I like all the types of music we play, especially in jazz band,” Meyer said. “I love music and band seemed like the perfect place.”

Like all musicians, she’s a work in progress, and would like to improve “definitely my sight-reading and knowing my notes. I need to work on tone.”

Away from the band, she’s always active (“I spend my spare time listening to music and climbing trees”) and has played volleyball, basketball and track for CMS, while also taking part in the school’s drama club.

Since the middle school doesn’t offer soccer, Meyer kicks up her heels playing for a team out of Oak Harbor, but is already looking forward to joining the Wolf pitch squad next year when she becomes a CHS freshman.

“I can’t wait to play in high school next year!”

"Oh, is that a camera you have in your hand? How ... interesting."

“Oh, is that a camera you have in your hand? How very … interesting.”

McKayla Bailey is the best. The absolute best.

No one at Coupeville High School can touch her for the title of Photo Bomb Ruler of the Universe. She is uncanny in her knowledge of where the camera is and when to slide into the picture at the last moment.

And yes, the Wolf junior, who celebrates her birthday today, is also a very good soccer, basketball and softball player, which is all good and fine.

But, in terms of generating page views, it’s her mad photo bomber skills that fuel the fire over here at coupevillesports.com.

Because, as they say, “She’s gold, Jerry! Gold!!”

Never change, McKayla. Never.

It’s gonna get feisty up in here.

As we head towards basketball season, the prospect of a Coupeville High School girls’ basketball team that refuses to back down from the traditional powers, and, instead, offers to smack them gently around the head two or three dozen times, is definitely in the air.

Last year’s Wolf JV team was dominated by scrappers like McKayla Bailey, the likely captains of the team, varsity veterans Amanda Fabrizi and Breeanna Messner, are tough as they come (Fabrizi kicked a girl in the head … sort of by accident), and the incoming freshman?

Yee gads…

As eighth graders, Valen Trujillo, Skyler Lawrence, Tiffany Briscoe and Co. transformed in the blink of an eye from extremely nice young women off the court to a pack of rabid pit bulls once the ball was tipped.

Trujillo, the closest thing this school has seen to legendary nicest woman alive/baddest bad-ass on the court Jodi “I will devour your soul” (Christensen) Crimmins in 20 years, made two King’s players leave the gym crying last season.

Nice.

Some of that much-needed aggressiveness was on display during a recent SWISH basketball game that pitted Coupeville against Ferndale, as captured in the photos above by wandering photographer Shelli Trumbull.

Let’s get ready to rumble.
