Covid postpones CHS girls basketball games

Two down, two play on.

At least that’s the plan at the moment.

A new positive Covid test inside the program will sideline the Coupeville High School girls basketball teams Thursday, with their home games against Friday Harbor moved to Jan. 17.

The Wolf boys are still scheduled to play, however, and the change means its JV team will get to play in the high school gym, instead of on the middle school court.

Game times Thursday are 4:00 PM for JV, and 5:30 for varsity.

Lessons learned, Wolf girls aim for future success

They never backed down.

Facing off with the heavyweight of the Northwest 2B/1B League Tuesday, the Coupeville High School varsity girls basketball team put up a strong fight against visiting La Conner.

The final score — a 69-13 loss — was lopsided, yes, as the Braves improved to 9-0 overall, 5-0 in conference action.

Just as almost every game La Conner has played this season has been.

But the Wolves, who sit in third-place in the seven-team NWL, were still fighting for loose balls and rebounds until the waning moments.

Now 3-2 in league play, 4-3 overall, Coupeville will try and take that same attitude into a big game Thursday against visiting Friday Harbor.

The Wolves, who are a half-game off of 1B Mount Vernon Christian (3-1, 7-2) in the overall standings, need to finish in the top two of the three NWL 2B schools to make the playoffs.

La Conner may be tough to catch, but Coupeville could stretch its advantage on Friday Harbor (1-3, 1-6) with a victory Thursday.

The matchup against the Braves, who earlier whacked MVC by almost the same score (66-13), was going to be a tough one.

Led by senior Sarah Cook (24) and junior Ellie Marble (19), who combined for almost two-thirds of its points, La Conner relentlessly attacked on defense, then made pinpoint passes and precision cuts on offense.

Coupeville got on the board fairly early, with Carolyn Lhamon knocking down a running layup to cut the early margin to 6-2, but that would be the only first-half field goal for the Wolves.

Free throws from Audrianna Shaw and Izzy Wells provided the only other points before the halftime break, and La Conner triggered a running clock early in the third quarter when it breached the 40-point lead.

Maddie Georges did rifle home a three-ball midway through the third quarter, while fab frosh Lyla Stuurmans rippled the net on a late-game jumper.

The final points of the night came on Coupeville’s best offensive play, as senior Abby Mulholland ripped a rebound loose, then took the ball back up strongly.

Kissing the ball off the glass for a bucket, she earned three points the hard way, also draining an ensuing free throw as dad/PA announcer Moose Moran exulted in his daughter’s stellar play.

Georges and Mulholland paced Coupeville with three points apiece, while Lhamon (2), Stuurmans (2), Izzy Wells (2), and Shaw (1) rounded out the scoring attack.

Savina Wells, Alita Blouin, Ja’Kenya Hoskins, and Gwen Gustafson also saw floor time for the Wolves, with Blouin bringing considerable heat on the defensive end of the floor.

Wolf JV girls tangle with Braves

One rough quarter killed their buzz.

Outscored 20-6 in the second quarter Tuesday, the Coupeville High School JV girls basketball team fell 48-41 to visiting La Conner.

The loss, coming in the team’s first game in 18 days, drops the young and scrappy Wolves to 1-2 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 1-4 overall.

Coming off of an extended holiday break, Coupeville opened strongly against the Braves.

Freshman Madison McMillan knocked down six quick points in the opening quarter, and with three teammates each chipping in for a bucket apiece, the Wolves were up 12-7 at the first break.

Unfortunately, the Braves had an answer for Coupeville’s early dominance, and it came courtesy of the wham-bam combo of Kennedy Miller and Maeve McCormick.

The La Conner duo combined to score 17 points in the second frame, pushing their team out to a 27-18 lead at the half.

Coupeville came out on top in both the third and fourth quarters, to the tune of 11-10 and 12-11, winning three of four frames, but the Wolves couldn’t get all the way back.

While Miller (19) and McCormick (18) teamed up to score the majority of La Conner’s points, CHS spread its offense out among multiple players.

McMillan and Brooklyn Thayer both rattled the rim for a team-high 10 points, with Thayer singing the nets in all four quarters, while Gwen Gustafson banked in nine.

Lyla Stuurmans (4), Reese Wilkinson (4), and Kayla Arnold (4) also scored for the Wolves, with Bryley Gilbert, Jada Heaton, Skylar Parker, Desi Ramirez-Vasquez, and Katie Marti also seeing floor time.

Wolves held in check by Hurricanes

The rim was unforgiving.

Held to a season-low in points Friday, the Coupeville High School varsity girls basketball squad hit a rare pothole.

Unable to sustain much of a charge against host Mount Vernon Christian, the Wolves fell 55-24, snapping a three-game winning streak.

The loss drops Coupeville to 3-1 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 4-2 overall, heading into the holiday break.

Defending NWL champs La Conner sits atop the standings at 4-0, while CHS and MVC are tied for second-place, a game back with eight more conference clashes coming in 2022.

Coupeville is off for two-weeks plus, not playing any games, league or non-league, until Jan. 4.

Entering play Friday, Coupeville had tallied between 36 and 59 points every time out. That streak ended, however.

The Wolves fell behind 8-0 after one quarter, then were staring at a 29-2 deficit by the time the halftime break rolled around.

Coupeville’s only first half bucket came courtesy of a putback off of a rebound by Izzy Wells, and CHS didn’t score again until the 3:22 mark of the third quarter.

Trailing 39-2 when Audrianna Shaw drilled a three-ball, the Wolves found a second wind, something which pleased its leader.

“We showed up halfway through the third (quarter) and finally started to play,” said Coupeville coach Megan Smith. “It was a big learning game for us.

“I’m bummed for them, but they saw that we could play with the top dogs,” she added. “It’s all about confidence, and we finally gained it.”

The Wolves put together their best offensive showing in the fourth quarter, winning the eight-minute battle 16-12.

Delivering a nice jolt of energy was junior sniper Alita Blouin, who banged away for a team-high 11 points in her season debut.

Crashing through the defense and drawing frequent fouls on her foes, “The Assassin” revived memories of her middle school days, when she terrorized anyone who dared to step to her on the hardwood.

Running mate Maddie Georges backed up Blouin with five points, including a late three-ball, while Shaw (3), Izzy Wells (2), Nezi Keiper (1), Savina Wells (1), and Ja’Kenya Hoskins (1) also scored.

While the team’s shooting touch was AWOL early, Coupeville’s hustle and grit on defense were always evident, with Keiper and Carolyn Lhamon hitting the boards with intensity.

JV girls push undefeated rivals to edge

It slipped away.

Unable to hold on to a lead late, the Coupeville High School JV girls basketball team fell just short Friday night at Mount Vernon Christian.

Up by six points headed into the fourth quarter, the young Wolves were outscored 14-2 in the final frame, setting the final deficit at 35-29.

The loss drops Coupeville to 1-1 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 1-3 overall, heading into the holiday break.

MVC’s second squad is a perfect 4-0 after escaping from the Wolves.

With Saturday’s games at South Whidbey postponed, CHS doesn’t hit the floor again for a game until Jan. 4.

Friday, the Wolves were in control of the game for much of the night, jumping out to a 10-4 lead at the first break.

MVC closed the gap to 18-15 by halftime, but Coupeville asserted itself with a 9-6 run in the third quarter.

Unfortunately for the Wolves, that was where the buckets stopped dropping.

Meanwhile, the Hurricanes rode a big fourth-quarter performance from sophomore Kiera Link, who went off for 10 of her game-high 14 points in the final eight minutes.

Freshman Katie Marti paced Coupeville with 10 points, including a pair of three-balls, while Gwen Gustafson knocked down eight, and Madison McMillan rippled the nets for six.

Nezi Keiper (3) and Reese Wilkinson (2) rounded out the scoring, with Mia Farris, Jada Heaton, Brooklyn Thayer, Kayla Arnold, Skylar Parker, Lyla Stuurmans, and Bryley Gilbert earning floor time.
