Just when he thought he was out, they pulled him back in.

Taking a break from his cushy semi-retirement after two-plus decades at the helm of the Coupeville High School boys’ basketball squad, “Dandy” Randy King is picking up a whistle again.

The roundball guru will be teaming up with Bob Martin to run the Coupeville Middle School boys’ hoops programs this season, which kick off with the first day of practice Monday.

The Wolves play an eight-game schedule, then turn the courts over to the girls in mid-December.

The schedule:

Wed-Nov. 6 @ Northshore
Wed-Nov. 13 Langley
Mon-Nov. 18 Lakewood
Wed-Nov. 20 @ King’s
Mon-Dec. 2 Granite Falls
Wed-Dec. 4 @ Sultan

They are the future, and they have great promise.

Thirty young women, ranging from the superintendent’s daughter to the offspring of former Wolf star athletes, made up the Coupeville Middle School volleyball squads this season.

Some were beginners, others seasoned veterans, but all made their town proud.

One of my great disappointments this fall has been my inability to see any of their matches in person, as my work schedule butted directly up against the middle school volleyball schedule.

But there will be other chances, as these young women will be the players to watch in the coming years.

The rosters:

Veronica Crownover
Savannah Gilcrease-Wolfe

“We had a good season, won a couple, lost a couple, kept their grades up, worked through the drama, and thankfully, had no major injuries!”

All in all, it was a strong Coupeville Middle School football season for coach Bob Martin.

A 41-point blowout over King’s was the biggest highlight and the participation of two female players took the Wolves into new territory.

Now the squad wraps up its season with a team dinner Wednesday, at which 23 players will receive certificates and enjoy a potluck.

“I thank them for tolerating me, wrap it up and turn to basketball,” Martin said.

CMS kicks off its boys’ basketball season with the first day of practice Monday, Oct. 21.

With four teams playing (7th grade varsity and JV and 8th grade varsity and JV), the Wolves split their season, with the girl hoopsters taking the court after the boys season wraps.

Football players honored Wednesday:

Chris Battaglia

Jaushon Collett

ms5ms7ms1ms8ms4ms6ms3They finally got a chance to play at home, and they looked stylish doing it.

Celebrating breast cancer awareness, the Coupeville Middle School football team sported pink socks and pink eye-black as they battled visiting Langley Wednesday.

The game, the finale to a very successful season, was the lone home event on the schedule for the Wolves.

On the scene to document the big hits, the quick passes and the high fashion was Shelli Trumbull, who was nice enough to let us use some of her photos.
