Do not get between Ben Olsen and the basketball, unless you have your life insurance paid up in full.

The Coupeville Middle School eighth grader is a rampaging beast on the backboards, as seen in the photo that leads off this collection.

And while CMS got dinged up pretty good by Langley Wednesday (the 7th grade JV was the only one of four Wolf squads to win), Olsen’s intensity bodes well for the future.

The Coupeville Middle School basketball team packed into the school bus at noon Wednesday and headed south to face off with Everett-based Northshore.

There was barely enough room for the players, let alone fans as we packed into the tiny gym.

Anyone who complains about the size of the Coupeville gym should be sentenced to this gym for a week.

The eighth graders would be first and the seriously undermanned JV squad took the floor with only one player on the bench as a sub.

Determined performances by Kyle Rockwell and JT Quinn plus physical play from James Vidoni were outmatched by the Northshore opponents, and the two-quarter game ended 22-6.

Then it was the eighth grade varsity’s turn.

It didn’t look good out of the gate, with Northshore running up 16 points before Joey Lippo hit a jumper to put Coupeville on the board.

This was followed by points from Hunter Downes, Nick Etzell, Luke Merriman and Ben Olson, but the closest the Wolves would get would be 18-8 during a 56-26 loss.

That didn’t keep them from playing hard.

Cameron Toomey-Stout scored four points with the first two fingers of his shooting hand taped together. Merriman led the team with nine points after recovering from an injury.

All of the players played solid, physical defense. But that didn’t change the fact that the Coupeville players were exhausted at the end of the game.

As an aside, somebody needs to capture this injury bug that plagues Coupeville sports and give it a good thrashing.

“We have good talent and good attitudes, and we are willing to work hard and are progressing,” said CMS eighth grade coach Bob Martin. “Our bench is short with six varsity and six JV players.”

The six-game two-team fall ball season wrapped up and the future of Coupeville baseball looks bright indeed.

All made contributions to an undefeated season for the North/Central team, and the Coupeville players did well and learned what playing in the Juniors is all about.

Cameron Dahl, the youngest player on the team, will play Majors next year and will shine due to what he learned playing up in the Junior leagues.

During the season, he got on base about a third of the time he showed up at the plate, and then promptly stole everything that wasn’t nailed down. Playing on the shorter base paths in the Majors, he will be the bane of any catcher’s existence.

Ethan Marx and Johnny Thurston put up respectable numbers, with Ethan hitting just above .300 and Johnny hitting just below.

Ethan soaked up any ball that came near him no matter what position he played, while the speedy Johnny was a real threat on the base paths.

Clay Reilly and Joey Lippo, however, just blew the roof off the place.

Both players’ batting average was a staggering .750, and that’s not a typo. Seven hundred and fifty.

Both had 18 plate appearances, and both were walked six times.

Beyond that, they could be counted on to hit the ball every game, and neither of them ever went hitless in any game.

Joey led off with a hit almost every game, and Clay could be counted on to drive the deep ball, contributing many extra base hits and a home run. Both were successful at any position they were placed at.

The next time they will be together on the same diamond will be next year, when Joey will be in 9th grade and Clay, Ethan and Johnny will be sophomores.

Add Julian Welling, Nick Etzell and Kyle Rockwell to that mix and next year’s JV team looks very good indeed.

Swag.

Swag.

The future of Wolf football is coming, and it’s coming fast.

The Eck brothers, twins Gabe and Ty, rampaged across the field as seventh graders on the Coupeville Middle School gridiron squad this season. Among their highlights was a 41-point drubbing of King’s in which both brothers put up sparkling offensive numbers.

As CHS fans await their arrival at the high school level, we can take a look back at one of their big accomplishments.

Back in the summer, before school got underway, the duo participated in the 8th annual Offense-Defense Bowl Week festivities at the Citrus Bowl in Orlando, Florida.

Gabe, a receiver, and Ty, a running back, were selected out of a group of  thousands from across the country. Even more impressive, it was the third time the now 12-year-olds had earned the honor.

They played at Cowboys Stadium in Dallas in 2011 and at Reliant Stadium in Houston in 2012.

The Offense-Defense Youth All-American Bowl is part of a week-long series of events including the televised Offense-Defense All-American Bowl, which showcased 88 top high school seniors.

Past participants in that game include current National Football League stars like Cam Newton, Carlos Dunlap and Dez Bryant.
