Joey Lippo is on his way.

The Coupeville Middle School eighth-grader is quickly scaling rungs in the baseball world, attracting attention as he does.

Coming off successful summer little league and fall ball seasons, Lippo has been selected to attend a national level spring training program in Mesa, AZ Jan. 17-20.

The only player to represent Washington state from the 12-14 year-old category, Lippo earned his spot with a stellar performance at a tryout in Bellevue, where he beat out a field of 30 players.

His booming bat and slick glove both nabbed the eyes of scouts.

Coaches at the national event will hail from colleges at the D-1 and D-2 levels, as well as a coach from Team USA.

His father, Joe Lippo, was having trouble staying calm after the news came through. While his son has been attending informal morning practices set up by CHS players — the only middle school student to do so — the invite to Arizona is a major step.

“I can barely contain myself,” Joe Lippo said. “My entire extended family is only mildly surprised. I, on the other hand, want to make town square announcements.”

This is a quiet time for Central Whidbey sports. Sort of.

The Coupeville High School basketball teams are deep into the first week of practice and don’t start actual games until Dec. 6.

Meanwhile the middle school boys’ basketball team is on its own holiday-themed vacation and doesn’t play against another team again until Dec. 2.

But to remind you that there is, indeed, basketball activity out there, we offer up some photos from traveling photographer John Fisken.

Do not fret. The games, they will return.

Mckenzie Meyer, hanging out with cousin Leroy Meyer.

Mckenzie Meyer, hanging out with cousin Leroy Meyer.

Whenever Mckenzie Meyer sings, she remembers her older brother, Kyle.

The Coupeville Middle School eighth-grader, who deftly balances sports, drama and band in a busy life, first found music thanks to her older sibling, who passed away recently.

It will be a link that will always keep the two connected.

“Kyle got me into music and I never let go,” Meyer said. “He taught me to sing, which I find is the easiest way to express my emotion, so without him I wouldn’t be the same and I probably wouldn’t be in band.”

Now in her third year of band, Meyer started on the clarinet, before bouncing over to the saxophone.

Regardless of what kind of music she’s playing, it’s a world she enjoys at all times.

“I like all the types of music we play, especially in jazz band,” Meyer said. “I love music and band seemed like the perfect place.”

Like all musicians, she’s a work in progress, and would like to improve “definitely my sight-reading and knowing my notes. I need to work on tone.”

Away from the band, she’s always active (“I spend my spare time listening to music and climbing trees”) and has played volleyball, basketball and track for CMS, while also taking part in the school’s drama club.

Since the middle school doesn’t offer soccer, Meyer kicks up her heels playing for a team out of Oak Harbor, but is already looking forward to joining the Wolf pitch squad next year when she becomes a CHS freshman.

“I can’t wait to play in high school next year!”
