Fall sports MVP Kole Kellison, who did play-by-play, scoreboard operating, speaker  removal and just about everything else … except when he was on his lunch break. (Robert Pelant photo)

Kim Andrews is everywhere at once.

At least it seems that way, as Coupeville High School’s athletic coordinator/supervisor, usually joined at the hip by partner Aimee Bishop, bounces from soccer game to volleyball match to football game and back again, constantly going in a circle and keeping everything running.

Whether eyeballing Kole “Does this school have good insurance?” Kellison as he climbs on a rainy press box roof to remove speakers, trying to keep rowdy, vuvuzela horn-demanding Wolf fans in reasonable check or making the middle school football players get off the field in time for the CHS girls’ soccer squad to take their place, she’s a whirlwind.

But, she would be the first to tell you that she couldn’t accomplish all that she does without the help of a crew of dedicated, and often unsung, volunteers. Today, she sings their praises, in her own version of an Oscars speech.

And no, she never really called them “the little people.”

“And a HUGE thank you to Kole and Ray Kellison for helping put the very heavy speakers on top of the booth most every game. They are also working on a permanent solution to our new sound system.”

“And, of course, thank you to my co-supervisor, Aimee Bishop, who makes the job super fun! WE are an intimidating pair…”

Why a photo of Hunter Hammer? One, every middle school b-baller wants to grow up to be a hard court beast like Mr. Hammer. And two, why not? He is the Page Hit King! (Shelli Trumbull photo)

The fall sports season still rages at the high school level, but down on the middle school grounds, the sound of basketballs thunking hardwood has replaced the thwack of football helmets and shoulder pads.

Head coach Bob Martin and (unpaid but highly productive) assistant Ryan King welcomed 24 boys to the first day of Coupeville Middle School basketball practice Monday, and, in the interest of appeasing grammas everywhere, if you scroll down a bit, you’re going to see all 24 names, in easy-to-read bold print even.

The 7th and 8th grade boys’ squads begin play Wednesday, Nov. 7, and their season goes through Dec. 12. Middle school girls hit the courts after that, as CMS splits up its basketball seasons.

Games tip-off with JV action at 3 PM, followed by varsity at 4 PM. The 7th grade squads play first on Mondays and Tuesdays, while the 8th grade netters lead off on Wednesdays and Thursdays.

The complete middle school schedule (which can and probably will change at a moment’s notice):

Tue-Nov. 6 @ Lakewood
Wed-Nov. 7 host Northshore
Tue-Nov. 13 @ Langley
Mon-Nov. 26 host King’s
Wed-Nov. 28 @ Granite Falls
Wed-Dec. 5 host Sultan
Mon-Dec. 10 @ Northshore
Wed-Dec. 12 host Langley (Varsity 2 PM/JV 4 – CMS students attend)

The future of Wolf volleyball. (Amy King photos)

Tiffany Briscoe

Valen Trujillo

Toni Crebbin’s cupboard is well-stocked.

The Coupeville High School volleyball coach will lose only three varsity players (Bessie Walstad, Katie Kiel and Lauren Escalle) to graduation this spring, while an influx of talent will come in looking to replace them, when this year’s eighth-grade spikers move on to high school ball.

At the forefront are two players — Tiffany Briscoe and Valen Trujillo — who played varsity the entire season. Right on their heels are the other nine girls who alternated between JV and varsity as the eighth-grade season played out.

“It was a great season,” said Coupeville Middle School coach Amy King. “The girls were fun and hard-working, so will be missed next year, but we will look forward to them adding to the high school squads!”

Delaney Armstrong led a stellar group of servers (“Our serving got stronger as the season went,” King said.), nailing 71 serves in play during the year. Mattea Miller (66) and Trujillo (62) completed the top trio.

“We had strong overhand hitting from Tiffany, Valen, Mattea and Skyler Lawrence, with great setting from Jae LeVine, Ally Roberts, Emily Licence and Holly Mathusek,” King said.

“We had several players who were first year players (Erin Kali-Edgar, Miller, Licence, Lawrence) who really added to the program this year,” she added. “Other returners who did a great job of not complaining, but just working hard and playing the best they could on both JV and varsity courts were Armstrong, LeVine, Roberts, Samee Arrants and Mathusek.”

The highlight of the season came Oct. 15, when the Wolves stuffed Sultan 25-18, 25-17, 13-15 to win their first match dating back to their time together as seventh-graders. They also took sets off of Langley, Sultan and Lakewood and played the epic set of the year — at any level — when they were edged 32-30 in the final set by Langley.

The JV squad beat Northshore 20-16, 20-8 and split matches with Langley, Sultan and Granite Falls.

The next generation of Wolf volleyball stars is on its way.

The Coupeville Middle School 8th grade spikers feature several players who could make a serious run at being standout players in the years to come, helping CHS varsity coach Toni Crebbin to sleep a little better at night knowing her cupboard is well stocked.

Here, in photos by 8th grade coach Amy King, we get a glimpse of the awesomeness that is on its way.

“We are … COUPEVILLE!!”

Football stud (and sometimes soccer announcer) Kole Kellison is a growing boy.

The council of soccer elders is pleased.

Being awesome is thirsty work.

“We are … the future of COUPEVILLE!!”

Not much to say here, so I’ll just shut up and let you bask in the glow of awesomeness that was Coupeville sports on Thursday.

Three wins (girls’ soccer, volleyball, JV volleyball) in one night and the lone home middle school football game of the season. No rain. It was the kind of day they talk about, the kind of day where people snap pictures as fast as they can.

Thanks to our vast spy network of moms, grandmas (and dads) we give you some more of that awesomeness, with soccer photos courtesy of Robert Pelant and middle school football pics (shot by Beverly Tommasi) poached off of Barb Cope’s Facebook page. We’ll see if she notices.
