"You the man, Drew Chan!!"

Caleb Valko approves of their winning ways.

We’re gettin’ historical, folks.

Four more wins Friday at the La Conner Invitational lifted Coupeville High School freshman track phenom Makana Stone to an unheard of 25-0. A victory in the 200 and a leg on three separate winning relay teams kept her perfect, with one more regular-season meet left.

By comparison, one of the finest seasons ever put together by a Wolf runner came from Kyle King in 2008, when he won 24 races as a senior, capping his year with a state title in the 3200. Younger brother Tyler won 21 races as a junior in 2010.

The way Stone is blasting off to the heavens in her debut makes it easy to forget Wolf senior Madison Tisa McPhee is having a brilliant senior campaign as well. Three more wins Friday, as she swept both hurdles events and ran on the 4 x 200 relay team, give her 17 for the year — and she missed a meet while on vacation.

Equally impressive in La Conner was senior Jai’Lysa Hoskins, who tied Stone’s four-title day by running on all three relay teams with her younger counterpart and also found time to win the 100.

Both the Wolf boys and girls finished third in the seven-team event, with La Conner and Crescent taking the respective team titles.

While the girls racked up eight titles on the day, Nick Streubel quietly went about his business, setting PR’s in both the shot put and discus as he swept both events.

That didn’t stop the Coupeville High School track team from busting records, winning events and shamelessly playing up to the cameras, however.

Madison Tisa McPhee (middle), AKA The Terminator.

They can not lose. They will not lose.

The dynamic duo of freshman Makana Stone and senior Madison Tisa McPhee have been nearly flawless this season.

With three more wins Thursday in her only home meet of the season, Stone is an astounding 21-0 as a high school track runner. Fast enough to overcome a momentary slip on the wet track in one of her races, she continued the greatest kick-off to a CHS track career ever seen.

Hot on her heels is state meet veteran Tisa McPhee, who also collected three wins against South Whidbey and remains unbeaten in hurdles and relays this year. Back from a Hawaiian vacation, the silky-smooth speedster immediately found her groove, even with the change in weather.

Competing on a drizzly day, the duo sparked a team-wide strong showing, as Coupeville captured seven titles on both sides of the scoreboard.

On the girls side of the battle, the Wolves swept all three relay races, with Stone, Tisa McPhee, Marisa Etzell, Jai’Lysa Hoskins and Rachel Wenzel, who set a PR in the javelin, claiming multiple victories.

Josiah Campbell paced the boys, taking home three firsts (100, triple jump, 4 x 100), while Nick Streubel and Sam Landau each won twice.

Something rare is going to happen today.

No, not the rain. That happens every dang day someone refers to this as “spring” and Mother Nature laughs and laughs and laughs…

The singular event in question is the one and only home Coupeville High School track meet of the season, as the Wolves welcome Island arch-rival South Whidbey to Mickey Clark Field for a 4 PM royal rumble.

Local track aficionados can witness the wonder that is freshman Makana Stone, as she takes her 18-0 record once more onto the track. Unbeaten in sprints and relays, she is off to what is believed to be the best start to a career EVER by a Wolf runner.

Hot on her heels is senior Madison Tisa McPhee, back from Hawaii, rested and tanned and ready to resume her beat-down of anyone foolish enough to line up next to her in the hurdles. Unbeaten in hurdles and relays this season, she is cruising towards a repeat visit to the state meet.

Along with the big duo, there are tons of other story-lines to play out, from thrower Nick Streubel vanquishing his foes to whether any of the staples will pop out of fellow thrower Caleb Valko’s head if he flexes too much for his fan club.

Plus, Wolf coach Randy King will be on the mike, announcing events in his velvet baritone. So there’s that, too.

"Do I look like I would lose?!?!"

“Do I look like I would lose?!?!”

Athletic.net, you have betrayed me!

The web site which posts high school track and field results messed up Thursday and led me (and others) to believe that Coupeville High School fab frosh Makana Stone had finally discovered what it felt like not to finish first in an event.

Not so!

The original results from a four-team meet in Sultan had King’s winning the girls’ 4 x 200 race, with the Wolves, who were missing the vacationing Madison Tisa McPhee, finishing third. That would have left a (very) small smudge on Stone’s record.

BUT NOT SO FAST, SKIPPY!!

The event was posted incorrectly, and Coupeville not only won, but barely missed a school record. With Stone and fellow freshman Sylvia Hurlburt being joined by senior Jai’Lysa Hoskins and sophomore Marisa Etzell, Coupeville broke the tape in one minute, 51.79 seconds.

That means Stone’s record reverts to 18-0 through five high school meets.

So, now you know … and knowing is half the battle.
