Tyler King, breakin’ ankles and hearts.

Tyler King is getting older, but he hasn’t slowed down.

The Coupeville High School grad, now a senior at the University of Washington, is almost at the end of his college running career, but he continues to churn out top times.

Over the weekend, he finished third in the 10,000 and 13th in the 5,000 while running for the Huskies at the Pac-12 Championships in Seattle.

King tore through the shorter race in 14:07.06, finishing in the top third of a 39-man field, then kicked it into another gear in the longer race.

Covering 10,000 meters in 29:09.15, he picked up six points for the U-Dub, helping the Husky men match the best showing in program history.

Washington finished second, behind only Oregon, which won its ninth straight mens’ team title, and the 122 points piled up were the most ever by a UW mens’ squad.

The only other time the Huskies had finished in second came back in 1976, when the league was the Pac-8.

The Washington women finished fourth, which tied a mark set three times prior (1995, 1996, 1998).

The Huskies are off to Lawrence, Kansas for the NCAA West Regionals May 26-28, then compete in the NCAA outdoor championships June 8-11.

Big Ben came up big time in the spotlight.

Coupeville High School grad Ben Etzell got the start and the win Saturday as the Saint John’s University baseball squad crushed Saint Mary’s 11-4 to win its second consecutive Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament title.

The Johnnies, now 28-12 on the season, advance to the NCAA D-III tourney May 18-21.

It’s the fifth time in school history they’ve punched their ticket to the big dance.

Etzell, a sophomore, got the ball and went 5.1 innings Saturday, striking out three and scattering nine hits.

With a little help from freshman reliever Jake Dickmeyer, who closed out the game for his first college save, Etzell improved to 3-1.

He’s struck out 36 batters over 41.2 innings of work this season, after going 1-0 with two saves as a freshman.

The Johnnies gave their hurler a lot of support Saturday, rapping out 13 hits and taking advantage of five Saint Mary’s errors.

Last year Saint John’s had to come back through the losers bracket to win the MIAC tourney, while this year they took the easier route, sweeping all three games they played.

One season ends, while three others roll on.

Of the four Coupeville High School grads currently playing college softball or baseball, Monica Vidoni was the first to kick her season off, and now she’s the first to reach the finish line.

Vidoni and her Rainy River Community College (Minnesota) teammates wrapped a 28-14 season by playing in the NJCAA Region 13B tourney this past weekend.

The Voyaguers won two games, with their freshman outfielder chipping in with a pair of hits, an RBI and a spectacular, juggling catch.

Vidoni snagged a ball over her head, only to have the ball pop out of her glove. Diving down, she successfully re-snared it.

“It was a scary catch,” Vidoni said with a laugh.

She finished the season with a .310 batting average, 20 hits (including three home runs and two doubles), 12 RBI, 16 runs and seven walks.

The other three Wolf alumni playing college ball — Ben Etzell, Madeline Roberts and Hailey Hammer — started their seasons later than Vidoni and still have games left to play.

Etzell, a sophomore at Saint John’s University in Minnesota, starts the postseason this Thursday.

The Johnnies (25-12) open the MIAC tourney against Hamline University in Cold Spring, Minnesota.

Etzell is 2-1 with 33 strikeouts in 10 games on the mound for Saint John’s, while he has six hits, seven runs, two doubles, four walks and four RBI at the plate.

Hammer, a frosh at Everett Community College (15-17) has four regular season games left in her first campaign.

She has amassed 13 hits (including a dinger), six RBI, eight runs and five walks while fighting through injury trouble.

Roberts, who is closing in on the end of a two-year run at Shoreline Community College, has nine hits, five walks, four stolen bases, four runs and three RBI for a 12-14 squad.

The Dolphins have six games left in their season.

The games are getting bigger and bigger.

As college baseball and softball teams work their way towards the postseason, four Coupeville High School grads are in the thick of things.

A quick look at the stats for the former Wolves (in alphabetic order):

Ben Etzell — Sophomore at Saint John’s University (Minnesota)

The Johnnies are 25-10 with one regular-season doubleheader left before starting postseason tourney play.

On the mound, Etzell is 2-1 with 32 strikeouts in 35.1 innings, while at the plate he’s racked up six hits (including two doubles), seven runs and four RBI.

Hailey Hammer — Freshman at Everett Community College

The Trojans are 14-14 with eight regular season games left to play.

Hammer has 13 hits (including a double and a home run), seven runs and six RBI.

Madeline Roberts — Sophomore at Shoreline Community College

The Dolphins are 10-12, with 10 more games on the regular season schedule.

Roberts has slapped seven hits (including a double), scored four times, stolen four bags and knocked in a run.

Monica Vidoni — Freshman at Rainy River Community College (Minnesota)

The Voyageurs are 26-11, and, having finished as runner-ups in the Northern Division tourney over the weekend, are now off to the Region 13B tourney starting Friday.

Vidoni is hitting .310 with 18 hits, 16 runs, seven walks and 11 RBI.

She’s also shown a knack for picking up extra bases, with three home runs and a pair of doubles in her first season of college ball.

She can’t be contained.

Coupeville High School grad Monica Vidoni mashed her third college softball home run Sunday, a solo pinch-hit blast that helped carry Rainy River Community College to a 7-1 win.

The Voyageurs, who swept their twin-bill with Mesabi Range, winning the nightcap 10-6 (Vidoni singled), have won four straight and 10 of their last 12.

RRCC sits at 22-11 with one doubleheader left on its regular season schedule.

Vidoni, a freshman, has seen action in 27 games for the Minnesota-based school this spring, piling up 15 hits, 13 runs, five extra-base knocks (two doubles to go with the three dingers) and nine RBI.

Two of her former teammates are deep into their college seasons, as well.

Hailey Hammer, a freshman at Everett Community College, has played in 17 games for an 11-13 squad.

She has 10 hits, seven runs, five RBI, three walks and a game-winning home run.

Madeline Roberts, a sophomore at Shoreline Community College, has been on the field in 15 games for the Dolphins, who are 10-8.

The slap-hittin’ outfielder has four hits, four runs, four steals, three walks, two RBI and a double on her resume this season.
