Falcon’s finest set for big stage!!

Whidbey is going to the big dance.

The Washington Interscholastic Basketball Coaches Association is reaching out to the hinterlands, inviting South Whidbey senior Lewis Pope to next weekend’s All-State All-Star games.

The invitation became Twitter-official late Friday afternoon, when WIBCA released rosters for all six teams.

The event, set for Saturday, Mar. 17 at Curtis High School, down in University Place, pits 10-man teams made up of seniors against each other in three games.

Kicking things off at 2 PM will be 1B vs. 2B, with 1A vs. 2A at 4 PM, and 3A vs. 4A wrapping things up at 6 PM.

Pope, who was co-MVP in the Cascade Conference this season, will be on a 1A team which includes Nooksack Valley’s backboard-busting Casey Bauman and George De Jong of state champ Lynden Christian.

The son of Teresa and Henry Pope, Lewis averaged 23.8 points a game during his senior season, and has signed to play college ball for Central Washington University.

Wolf duo earn All-State honors!!

Coupeville High School had two of the best spikers in the state this fall.

It’s official, as seniors Lauren Rose and Hope Lodell were named to the All-State team Friday by the Washington State Volleyball Coaches Association.

The duo received Honorable Mention nods, along with Klahowya libero Maile Lueck.

King’s, which won the state title, had the 1A Player of the Year (outside hitter Alli Hansen) and Coach of the Year (Jeff Fransen).

Rose was honored for her work as a setter, while Lodell, who exits holding CHS single season and career records for service aces, was named to the team as a libero.

As part of a stellar group of seniors — The Magnificent Seven — they led the Wolves to a second-straight Olympic League championship.

Coupeville won every set it played against conference foes this season, to the tune of 27-0, tied a program single-season record with 13 victories and advanced to the state tourney for the first time since 2004.

Wolf rivals honored for stellar diamond work!!

No love for the Wolves, but some appreciation for Whidbey Island.

When the Washington State Baseball Coaches Association released its 2017 All-State teams Tuesday, Coupeville rival South Whidbey landed two players on the 1A squad.

Senior pitcher Will Simms and senior outfielder Connor Antich capped their prep careers with the honor.

The Falcons went 12-10 this spring while playing in the always-tough 1A/2A Cascade Conference, which included eventual 1A state runner-up Cedar Park Christian.

On a side note, South Whidbey did lose 7-4 to Coupeville when the two Island rivals faced off in a non-conference game early in the season.

Come on, you know I have to mention that!

Also named to All-State squads were several other players who the Wolves faced this season, including Klahowya’s Dylan Zuber.

The senior pitcher/second-baseman was the lone representative from the 1A Olympic League.

Four other Coupeville rivals were honored, with Jacob Richey and Elliot Puttkammer-Saxen from The Bush School making the 1A team, James Grubb of Sequim tabbed in 2A and Kai Herko of Friday Harbor named to the 2B/1B squad.

The WSBCA honored players at five levels, with 1A, 2A, 3A and 4A having their own squads. The best of 2B and 1B were combined to make a fifth team.

Breaking from tradition a bit, coaches did not name players of the year or divide the lists into First and Second Team honors.

Ty Singleton, who led King’s Way Christian to a state title, was tabbed as the 1A coach of the year.

Wolves sizzle at hardball all-star games!!

Kory Score joined the duo for a final day of high school baseball.

Taylor Consford was unstoppable.

The Coupeville High School senior capped his prep baseball career Thursday with an epic day at the A/B Northwest District All-State baseball feeder games in Bellingham.

Consford was a jack of all trades, tossing four shutout innings on the mound in the first game, then moving behind the plate to catch four innings in the nightcap.

He also ripped off six hits over the two games, piling up five singles and a triple across 16-1 and 26-1 wins by his Americans squad.

Two of Consford’s CHS teammates joined him in Bellingham, with Clay Reilly pulling time in the outfield in game one and Kory Score working at first-base in game two.

The duo found themselves on the opposite side of the field from Consford, playing for the Nationals squad.

Score ripped a single his first time up, and was nailed in the wrist by a pitch his second go-around.

Reilly grounded out four times, but the combination of his work in Thursday’s game and through the season for the Wolves earned him a nomination for the All-State series.

That event, which brings together seniors from all six high school classifications in Washington (4A-1B), is held in Yakima June 10-11.

The rosters for All-State are finalized after the last of 14 feeder games is played June 5.

Coupeville coach Chris Smith, having wrapped his first season at the helm of the Wolves, came away very happy with how his first group of seniors played in the spotlight.

“Taylor was clearly a standout player in the two games played,” he said. “I was very proud of how our players represented themselves and how they represented Coupeville baseball.”

Diamond days not done!!

He’ll be joined by Taylor Consford.

Kory Score makes three, bringing a smile to coach Chris Smith’s face.

Don’t turn in those uniforms just yet.

Three Coupeville High School seniors will get at least one more day on the baseball diamond after being selected to play June 1 in the Northwest District A/B feeder games.

Clay Reilly, Taylor Consford and Kory Score have been tabbed to visit Bellingham and play at Joe Martin Field.

Feeder games are held in numerous locations across the state from May 30-June 5, featuring Washington’s best senior ballplayers.

The best performers at each place are nominated for the All-State Baseball Series, and those who make the final cut travel to Yakima June 10-11.

In recent years, CHS pitchers Ben Etzell and Aaron Curtin got the All-State call, with Etzell making the trip and pitching in 2014.

Reilly, an outfielder who sometimes moonlighted at catcher, was a four-year player for the Wolves.

A feared hitter with a powerful arm, he helped lead CHS to its first baseball league title in 25 years during his junior season.

Score was also a starter on that squad, manning first base the last two seasons after moving back to town, while Consford, Coupeville’s starting catcher, transferred from Oak Harbor before his senior season.
