Ava Lucero was feelin’ it.

The Coupeville High School hoops hotshot accounted for all but one of her team’s points Friday night but a well-balanced Orcas Island squad proved to be too much to overcome for the Wolf JV girls.

Lucero banked in a game-high 18 points, hitting a pair of three-balls and tickling the twines on six of eight free throws, but the visiting Vikings had four players score eight or more as they captured a 45-19 victory.

The loss, coming in the first game for Coupeville’s JV since Jan. 12, drops the Wolf young guns to 0-5 in Northwest 2B/1B League action, 2-8 overall.

Alita Blouin’s squad had sat for a bit as neither Darrington nor Concrete — the last two CHS foes — have a JV team this season.

Orcas, which has been playing on a more consistent basis, jumped out to a 17-6 lead after one quarter of play Friday, then stretched the margin to 31-11 by the half and 41-14 through three frames.

Coupeville’s other point came courtesy 8th grader Anna Powers, who dropped in a free throw.

Cami Van Dyke, Emma Cushman, Zayne Roos, Olivia Hall, Taylor Marrs, Allie Powers, Finley Helm, Elizabeth Marshall, and Willow-Leedy Bonifas all saw floor time, bringing a fiery intensity to their defensive work.

The Wolves hit the road for two of their final three games this season, traveling to Mount Vernon Christian this coming Tuesday before hosting their home finale Friday, Jan. 30 against La Conner.

The final JV clash, set for Feb. 6, is set to go down on Friday Harbor.

Give her one more minute.

Ava Lucero went bonkers in the fourth quarter Saturday and almost shot the Coupeville High School JV girls’ basketball squad to a stunning come-from-behind win against host Morton-White Pass.

Unfortunately for the Wolves the clock ran out on them, allowing the Timberwolves to narrowly escape with a 33-29 win despite being outscored 17-2 across the game’s final eight minutes.

The non-conference loss, coming in their first game since Dec. 16, drops the CHS young guns to 1-5 on the season.

Lucero and Co. will be back in front of their home fans Tuesday for a rumble with Friday Harbor, where they’ll look to continue their torrid play.

Saturday’s game featured a slow start for the Wolves, as they scraped out just five points in the first half.

Down 6-3 after a defensive-minded first quarter, Coupeville slipped behind 19-5 at the break, before going down 31-12 through three frames.

That was when things really began to click for the road warriors, however, with Lucero splashing in a pair of three-balls as she scored 13 of her team-high 17 points in crunch time.

Zayne Roos and Olivia Hall also chipped in with buckets, while a fired-up Wolf defense limited their hosts to just two free throws in the final quarter.

Coupeville, which was missing several key players, got points from six of the eight players in uniform.

Roos (4), Cami Van Dyke (2), Anna Powers (2), Taylor Marrs (2), and Hall (2) backed up Lucero, with Allie Powers and Emma Cushman also seeing floor time.

They got tougher as the night went on.

The Coupeville High School JV girls’ basketball team played its strongest 16 minutes in the second half Friday on Orcas Island but couldn’t quite catch up to the Vikings.

Despite playing their hosts straight up after halftime, the Wolves ultimately fell 34-26 in a hotly contested conference clash.

With the loss, CHS slips to 0-1 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 1-3 overall, and heads back home to square off with Mount Vernon Christian Tuesday night.

Orcas jumped out to a 10-7 lead after one quarter of action Friday, then stretched the lead out to 23-15 heading into the halftime break.

The Wolf girls responded with an admirable show of grit, however, winning the fourth quarter 7-2 to keep the second half scoring knotted up at 11 points per team.

Ten Coupeville players hit the floor for coach Alita Blouin, with Ava Lucero knocking down 11 points to lead the scoring attack.

Cami Van Dyke (4), Anna Powers (4), Finley Helm (2), Willow Leedy-Bonifas (2), Emma Cushman (2), and Elizabeth Marshall (1) put their names in the scoring column, with Olivia Hall, Taylor Marrs, and Allie Powers also earning floor time.

They turned up the heat midway through the night.

Dominating the second and third quarters Tuesday, the Coupeville High School JV girls’ basketball team pulled away for a convincing 38-24 win over visiting East Jefferson to give coach Alita Blouin her first victory.

The non-conference triumph lifts the Wolves to 1-2 on the season heading into their first road trip of the season, which comes Friday with a trek to Orcas Island.

Tuesday’s tilt, against a 1A program which combines athletes from Chimacum and Port Townsend High School, was a close one for the first eight minutes.

Cami Van Dyke banked in a pair of buckets and Willow Leedy-Bonifas drained a three-ball in the opening frame, but the teams were locked up in a 7-7 tie at the first break.

After that, however, Blouin’s squad blew past the Rivals, outscoring them 10-3 in the second and 9-2 in the third to build a 26-12 advantage.

East Jefferson rallied a bit, scoring half of its points during a 12-12 tussle in the fourth, but the Wolves refused to break, coasting in for the win.

Coupeville got a huge chunk of its offense from the duo of Ava Lucero and Leedy-Bonifas, who went off for 15 and 11 points respectively.

Van Dyke chipped in with eight, while Anna Powers and Finley Helm each added a bucket to top off the scoring.

Olivia Hall, Emma Cushman, Zayne Roos, Elizabeth Marshall, and Taylor Marrs all saw floor time as well in the inaugural win.
