The dynasties roll on.

Columbia River and Chelan captured 2A and 1A state volleyball titles Saturday, respectively, which means a pair of former Wolves returned to the winner’s circle.

For Columbia River, which is led by former Coupeville High School coach Breanne Smedley, it’s the program’s fourth consecutive crown.

The Rapids, who were the #3 seed, toppled Orting and Ridgefield, before upsetting #2 Burlington-Edison in four sets in the semifinals.

Smedley’s crew then held off a match point against top-ranked Ellensburg in the final, rallying for a 25-19, 23-25, 13-25, 26-24, 15-8 victory.

Meanwhile, in the 1A tourney, Chelan, whose roster includes former CMS student Grace Roberts, made history by claiming a fifth consecutive title.

That ties the Washington state all-classification record, set by 4A Mead.

The top-seeded Mountain Goats didn’t drop a set across their four state matches this year.

Roberts, daughter of CHS grads Jay and Jennifer Roberts, is a sophomore middle blocker who played for Coupeville through middle school before a family move to the Eastern half of the state.

Straight out of Coupeville to a state title.

Former Wolf middle school player Grace Roberts and former CHS coach Breanne Smedley both exited the SunDome in Yakima Saturday as champs.

Roberts, daughter of Jay and Jennifer Roberts, is now a freshman at Chelan High School and was on the bench as the Mountain Goats claimed a fourth-straight 1A crown.

The #1 seed held off #6 seed Freeman 3-1 in the finale.

Roberts, whose older sister Ally played for Smedley when she coached the Coupeville High School program, was primarily a JV player this season.

But Grace was promoted to varsity for the postseason run, giving her a chance to experience the highest level of her sport.

That should bode well for her future, as she continues to progress towards her own moment in the spotlight.

“Amazing team! Happy to be a part of their program!” said mom Jennifer. “So much talent and awesome coaches!”

Smedley, who now coaches at Columbia River, led her squad to a third-straight 2A crown, knocking off arch-rival Ridgefield 3-0.

Capping an unbeaten season, the Rapids crushed it in the championship match, peeling the Spudders 25-14, 25-8, 25-7.

There were spikes, and reunions, in the air.

Bouncing between two locations Saturday, wanderin’ camera clicker John Fisken snapped a variety of volleyball-related pics.

While there were a lot of current Coupeville athletes and coaches featured in the snaps, there was also an appearance or two by former Wolves.

Former CHS spiker guru Breanne Smedley, who now coaches at Columbia River, was in Oak Harbor for a tourney.

Meanwhile, in Coupeville, Marie Bagby and her boys Mike and Jason — all top Wolf athletes in their day — gathered in the gym to watch Marie’s niece, Chloe Gaydeski, rip off spikes for visiting Forks.

Now, if the daughter of Ron Bagby’s sister, who’s just a sophomore, were to move to Cow Town to finish her stellar three-sport prep career?

A lot more family reunions and a lot more photos. And a lot more page hits for me.

Just sayin’…

The student section was small, but vocal on a sunny Saturday.

“Whoa now. I didn’t say I could dance LIKE John Travolta. I said I could dance BETTER than John Travolta.”

They smile now, but put them on the volleyball court, and they will unleash a can of whup ass on you.

She’s a two-timer.

Former Coupeville High School volleyball coach Breanne Smedley led Columbia River to the 2A state title Saturday, successfully defending a crown won last year.

With the back-to-back championships, the Rapids have won four state volleyball titles all-time.

Smedley and her crew have the 2021 and 2022 wins at the 2A level, while Columbia River also won a 4A title in 1991 and a 3A crown in 2000.

The Rapids plowed through Ephrata (3-0), Enumclaw (3-0), Burlington-Edison (3-1), and Ridgefield (3-0) at the Yakima SunDome.

The championship win was sweet revenge for Columbia River, as it suffered its only loss during a 23-1 season while playing Ridgefield for a district title.

Smedley coached select and high school volleyball during her time on Whidbey, fronting the CHS varsity program during the 2014 and 2015 seasons.

Her second Wolf squad toppled Seattle Christian in the playoffs, the first postseason win for Coupeville’s volleyball program in a decade.

That helped set the path for success achieved by her successor, Cory Whitmore, who has guided CHS to seven straight winning seasons and a trip to state in 2017.

Breanne and husband Brett, who coached high school football and middle school basketball in Coupeville, moved to Vancouver in 2016.
