Birthday buddies Luke Carlson and Brittany Powers.

They are birthday buddies, united by a cake day, a school and a love for competition.

Coupeville High School sophomores Brittany Powers and Luke Carlson, who celebrate birthdays today, are fast-rising, outgoing athletes who are even better people off the field or court.

Carlson has played football and thrown in several events as a member of the Wolf track team, but his best moments this year came around the CHS softball field.

Hanging out with pal Jordan Ford in a couch they hauled to the side of the field, or handing out Popsicle’s to his track mates as they headed back to the gym, Luke is a friendly face wherever he pops up.

Powers, who has divided time between basketball and volleyball in her days at CHS, is just as friendly … off the court.

On the hardwood, the mighty mite is a raging beast unleashed, which is just how her coach, Amy King, likes it.

One of the scrappiest of the Wolves, Brittany helped power the Coupeville JV girls by fighting for every ball, banging elbows off of people’s heads (when necessary) and being an all-around ball-hawk.

She collected an impressive set of dings and bruises for King’s Maraduers, while also showing a touch for dropping baskets that should benefit her going forward.

Both of our birthday buddies have sparkled thus far, and I’m sure in the second half of their high school careers, sports and otherwise, they will continue to excel.

Happy birthday Brittany and Luke, from all of us in the stands.

It wasn’t perfect, maybe, but it was full of positives.

A year after a very polished squad rolled through much of its competition, this year’s version of the Coupeville High School JV girls’ basketball squad was much more of a work-in-progress.

With a roster that included six freshmen, several of whom hadn’t played before, the young guns showed improvement every week, and that’s all that coach Amy King asks.

While Coupeville fell 47-31 to visiting Klahowya Saturday, the Wolves finished 7-11, including a strong 5-4 in league play.

They never had anything longer than a two-game losing streak, and featured several players who should be making the jump up to help the varsity in the coming years.

One of the first who could get the call up to the big leagues is freshman Sarah Wright, who capped her season by pounding away in the paint for a game-high 10 points Saturday.

A ferocious rebounder and enforcer, she’s joined in the let’s-pound-folks department by Brittany Powers.

Listed at a mere five-foot-two in the program — she ties Lauren “Mouse” Rose as the smallest Wolf — Powers spends her time on the floor thrashing people up one side of the court and down the other.

Saturday night was a prime example, as she twice exited, applied ice to another place she had been whacked by rogue Eagles, then charged right back on the court to repay the experience, earning a smile and nod from her coach.

The two mighty mites both tallied seven points apiece, with Powers twice taking the ball coast-to-coast for buckets, while Rose pulled off the game’s best move, slicing the defense for a runner, then tacking on the ensuing free throw.

Allison Wenzel added three, while Skyler Lawrence and Nicole Lester rounded out the scoring with a bucket apiece.

Ashlie Shank and Maddy Hilkey pushed the ball all night, running the Wolf offense, while Lindsey Laxton and Brisa Herrera both shone on defense.

Herrera, in particular, spent most of her time on the floor ripping the ball loose from Eagles hands, making sure every called jump ball she was involved in actually ended with her hands alone on the ball.

Brittany Powers live for the rush.

The Coupeville High School freshman, who’s in her second season as a volleyball player, has played numerous sports over the years.

Soccer, baseball and basketball have all captured her attention.

But right now, being on the volleyball court and directing traffic as a setter for the Wolf JV spikers, Powers has found her groove.

And what is that?

“The rush you get when you send the ball over!”

Powers picked up volleyball as an eighth grader (“so I could try something new”) and has been a quick learner.

She is fairly confident in her serving and setting, but would like to fine-tune some other areas of her game.

“I would like to work on my spiking,” Powers said. “To be a team leader and get one spike over.”

Away from the game, she enjoys going to the beach with friends and longboarding.

Her support crew, on the volleyball court and off, is always there for her, providing Powers with inspiration.

“My mom, dad and friends have always been there for me to push me to keep going.”
