College football raged across the land Saturday, and everywhere you looked, a former Wolf was in there fighting.

Four Coupeville High School alumni suited up for action in games stretching from Montana to Canada, and all had an impact.

Redshirt freshman lineman Nick Streubel and his Central Washington University teammates cruised to their first win of the season, clobbering visiting Western Oregon 40-19.

Meanwhile, freshmen defensive backs Josh Bayne and Jake Tumblin gave it their all, but couldn’t quite save Simon Fraser University from falling 16-10 to visiting Azusa Pacific.

Bayne collected six solo tackles and one assist, while Tumblin had two tackles, two assists and was in on a tackle for a loss as they and the rest of the Clan celebrated Homecoming.

Tumblin, Bayne and Streubel will be reunited next Saturday, Sept. 26, when Simon Fraser travels to Ellensburg to face Central.

Up Montana way, the elder statesman of former Wolf gridiron gods, junior Mitch Pelroy, doesn’t know what it’s like to lose these days.

Pelroy and his Montana Western squad crushed host Montana State-Northern 44-2 to go to 3-0 on the season.

The Bulldogs have won seven straight dating back to last season.

With MSN having no luck scoring, Pelroy only had one kickoff to deal with and he brought it back 22 yards.

He’s averaging 18.5 yards per return this season.

Pelroy also chipped in on defense, recording a tackle and an assist, while teammate Sam Rutherford lit up the scoreboard with four touchdowns.

Now, it’s the guys turn.

Days after Coupeville High School girls’ basketball players returned from a camp at Ocean Shores, a chunk of the Wolf boys are off on their own adventure.

Shepherded by CHS coaches Anthony Smith and Dustin Van Velkinburgh, the Wolves are headed to Eastern Washington for a camp at Central Washington University.

The camp runs June 28-July 1.

Teams are scheduled to play twice Sunday, three times Monday, twice more Tuesday, then cap things off with a two-minute tournament Wednesday.

Nick Streubel, AKA The Big Hurt. (John Fisken photo)

Nick Streubel, AKA The Big Hurt. (John Fisken photo)

There was a brief moment when Nick Streubel was a little guy.

A very brief moment.

Nowadays, the Central Washington University football lineman, and former Wolf legend, is a weight room-approved beast whose muscular outer layer (barely) disguises the easy-going, super-friendly guy he really is.

One of my most enduring memories of The Big Hurt, who celebrates the big 1-9 today, came after a basketball game.

Streubel, the most physically imposing specimen on the CHS campus, was hanging out on the court with teammates, family and friends and the young son of Wolf assistant boys’ basketball coach Dustin Van Velkinburgh was among the entourage.

Lifting the little boy up into the heavens, Nick balanced him on his shoulders and handed him a ball, then moved over under the basket so the super-excited kid could try and dunk the ball.

As attempt after attempt failed, Streubel, huge smile splashed across his face, held the boy aloft, encouraging him.

Then, success, and The Big Hurt swept the boy to the floor and high-fived him halfway across the gym.

Of course, there was also the time after a game in Port Townsend, one played on a field of mud that smelled like cow manure.

Streubel, covered head to toe in the gunk (and unable to shower as the team made a dash for the last ferry) spotted Coach V and took off after him, intent on giving him a full-body hug.

Bowling over teammates, mud flying everywhere while Van Velkinburgh, laughing hysterically, did his best to evade him, Streubel made the dock itself shake.

The point of this all is that Nick, while a top athlete (football, basketball, track and before high school, as a swim sensation), is a better person.

He’s just a good guy, and that has always shone through.

Parents David and Nanette Streubel (and proud big sis Amanda) raised him the right way, and Nicholas earned the respect, admiration and friendship of many in Cow Town.

Of all the athletes who have signed college scholarships during the 25 years I’ve covered high school sports on Whidbey Island, I’m pretty sure I was happiest to see him write his name on the paper.

Happy birthday, Nick.

It was an honor to cover your athletic exploits and it’s always been a pleasure to know you.

He may not have wi-fi all the time yet, but, other than that, Nick Streubel is adapting to college life.

The former Coupeville High School All-State lineman is currently wrapping up his first camp as a college player at Central Washington University.

After that comes a move into his dorm and then work, work and more work as he fine-tunes his game and prepares for one day knocking helmets on the college gridiron.

Having caught him during a laundry run, one of the few times when he has access to the internet right now, we were lucky enough to get this update directly from The Big Hurt himself.

In it, he discusses a position change from high school and his excitement over getting to retain his jersey number.

Yeah, they said either guard or center and right now it looks like I’ll stay at center.

I’m looking forward to trying something new on the line. And honestly I’m loving it and the challenge of it.

Yeah, I’m gonna redshirt this year, so I won’t be playing in any of the games or traveling to the away games.

I do get to be on the sideline in my jersey and the number I got was 68!

Other then that, football camp ends soon and we’re getting ready for game prep against Montana.

Things are going great over here in Ellensburg and I can’t wait to see what this year has in store for me!

Nick Streubel dotted all his I’s and crossed his T’s and is now a Wildcat.

The Coupeville High School senior lineman, a 1A All-State player this year, officially signed his letter of intent Wednesday morning to play football for Central Washington University next fall.

The Big Hurt will be on scholarship at the D-2 school, which has a new coach in Ian Shoemaker.

CWU has won the conference championship in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference seven of the last 11 seasons. They went 7-4 in 2013.

To see who else has signed with CWU, a list that already includes quarterback Jayden Croft, the grandson of Tumwater coach Sid Otton, the winningest high school coach in state history and my 9th grade Health teacher, head over to:
