“Oh, sweet revenge!”

A week after losing the season opener to their arch-rivals, the Central Whidbey Little League Juniors softball squad got the big payback, pounding North Whidbey 13-1 Monday night.

The victory, coming in their first home game, lifts the Hammerheads to 2-2 on the season.

Central Whidbey was paced by flame-throwing pitcher Savina Wells, who threw 68 pitches in the game, 45 of which were strikes.

Toss in some stellar work with the gloves, and a 12-hit attack at the plate, and Coupeville’s diamond queens were in top form.

“We played Hammerhead softball today,” said CWLL coach Fred Farris. “Great pitching by Savina, who mixed up her pitches against a very good lineup, (and the) girls played great defense!

“This group always responds well after losses. And they’ve had very few over these last four years,” he added. “They were all business and having fun while doing it!”

Mia Farris dances the dance of her people.

Central Whidbey jumped out to an early lead, pushing four runs across in the bottom of the first inning, then repeating the feat in the second frame.

Three more runs in the third and two in the fourth stretched the lead out far enough that the game was mercy-ruled after North Whidbey came up empty in the fifth.

Six different Hammerhead players collected a hit, with Mia Farris and Teagan Calkins leading the way with three base-knocks apiece.

Mia Farris had the biggest blow for Central Whidbey Monday, bashing a double.

Madison McMillan and Wells each had two hits, with Jada Heaton and Taylor Brotemarkle rounding out the hit parade.

Taylor Brotemarkle dares you to run.

Brotemarkle also had the best web gem of the day, flying in from shortstop to snag a hot shot in front of second, before making a strong throw on the move.

“She delivered to Mia, who had a perfect stretch to just get the runner and end the inning,” Fred Farris said. “Show stopper!”

Central Whidbey was superb on defense all game, with Katie Marti a standout at second base.

She opened the game by gobbling up everything in the first inning, making clean plays on three straight grounders to retire North Whidbey one-two-three.

Calkins (four runs), Wells (six RBI), Chloe Marzocca (two walks), and Candace Meek (the only Hammerhead drilled by a wayward pitch) were the stat leaders, while Anna Steckman and Mayleen Weatherford all chipped in to help bring home the victory.

Mayleen Weatherford has places to be.

“That was a fun day of softball!”

Central Whidbey Little League Juniors softball coach Fred Farris has seen more than a few games in his lifetime, but Saturday’s doubleheader in Mount Vernon was a special treat.

His Hammerheads squad ultimately split a pair of games with South Skagit, falling 9-7 in the opener, before rallying for a stunning 17-16 win in extra innings in the nightcap.

With the split, Central Whidbey improves to 1-2 on the season, with its first home game at Rhododendron Park set for this coming Monday.

How Saturday played out:

Game 1:

Savina Wells was back in the pitcher’s circle after missing her team’s opener with an injury and was firing BB’s, striking out 11 South Skagit sluggers.

Central Whidbey jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead, before a few defensive miscues hurt the cause.

Trailing 6-2 after two innings, the Hammerheads stormed back to tie things up at 6-6, but South Skagit proved wily and put together a three-run bottom of the sixth to take the win.

Mia Farris, Madison McMillan, and Katie Marti led the hit parade, each whacking a pair of base-knocks.

McMillan crunched a double and triple, with her three-bagger “a majestic fly ball that would have been 30 feet over our left field fence (at home),” while Wells also tripled.

Send out your best pitchers, cause Madison McMillan is here to do some damage.

Game 2:

Hammerheads hurlers Chloe Marzocca and Wells combined to whiff 10 hitters in a game which took wild swings on the scoreboard.

Down 14-7, Central Whidbey scored nine unanswered runs to carry a 16-14 lead into the bottom of the seventh, and (supposedly) final inning.

While South Skagit scraped out two runs in the final frame, giving the fans free softball, it was time for the Hammerheads to shine in extra innings.

Jada Heaton began the top of the eighth perched on second, then ran her opponents ragged.

First she stole third, before scampering home with what would prove to be the winning run on a groundout off the bat of Marzocca.

Things got dramatic in the bottom of the inning, but in a good way.

South Skagit also got a runner at second to begin, but Wells snapped off liquid heat, whiffing the first two hitters to come to the plate.

With the game on the line, a pitch got away from Central catcher Katie Marti for a half-second, but the granddaughter of former CHS football legend Paul Messner promptly wrote her own stirring chapter of athletic success.

Katie made a perfect retrieval of a passed ball and then a no-look flip to Savina for the game-ending out!,” exclaimed an amped-up Fred Farris. “As gutty a win as I’ve ever been a part of!”

Katie Marti, upholding the family tradition of athletic excellence.

Stats for the day:

Teagan Calkins (one run, one hit)
Mia Farris (six runs, five hits, two RBI, two walks)

“It was pure joy to see all these girls back on the field!!”

The Central Whidbey Little League Juniors softball squad opened a new season Monday — a major milestone during the Age of Coronavirus — and just getting back in action was enough to leave coach Fred Farris with a huge smile (under his mask).

While the Hammerheads fell short on the scoreboard, with arch-rival North Whidbey rallying for a 16-6 win, the CWLL coach was pleased with a lot of what he saw.

“Girls played great defense and were in good shape,” Farris said.

The diamond guru also had to tip his hat to the rival pitcher, Addison Morales, who he and CWLL assistant coach Kim Brotemarkle helped train.

“We coached her in fall ball three or four years ago and she was just learning to pitch then,” Farris said. “She has really turned into a great pitcher and pitched a great game.”

Facing off with Morales was Chloe Marzocca, who tossed a complete game for Central Whidbey and was often very effective, scattering six hits.

At the plate, Teagan Calkins and Madison McMillan had booming bats for the Hammerheads, collecting two hits apiece.

Calkins delivered a triple and two RBI, McMillan scored twice and stole five bases, while four other Central players came around to tap home plate.

Jada Heaton, Mayleen Weatherford, Katie Marti, and Mia Farris all scored, with Heaton (4), Farris (3), and Marti (2) combining for nine steals.

Taylor Brotemarkle, Anna Steckman, and Candace Meek round out the 11-player Hammerhead roster.

The two teams will meet again, with Central Whidbey set to face North Whidbey six times during a 16-game schedule.

It’s a rivalry Fred Farris embraces.

“I wanted to mention what great sportsmanship the North Whidbey players and coaches showed,” he said. “Although rivals on the field, they truly are great friends off of it.”
