On to state!

Help ’em get to Vancouver.

The Whidbey Island All-Stars juniors softball squad — a mix of Coupeville and Oak Harbor players — is off to the state tourney in early July, carrying the banner of District 11 champs.

The Inferno need your help, however.

It’s 210 miles from Whidbey to Vancouver, which sits at the bottom of Washington state, meaning players and parents will need to stay on-site for up to a week, instead of making trips back-and-forth.

But you (yes, you!) can help the Inferno with gas, food, and lodging.

If you do, than in the coming years when the players go on to be high school softball stars, before possibly playing in college and beyond, you can sit back and say, “I helped make that possible.”

So, you’d have that going for you, which is nice.

One island, ready to thump on everyone else.

North and Central Whidbey are teaming up for the next round of little league Juniors softball competition.

With seven players from each league, the Whidbey Island Inferno All-Stars are a well-balanced squad, with hopes of making it all the way to the state tourney.

“This is a really solid team with strong pitching, hitting, and depth at each defensive position,” said coach Fred Farris. “It is going to be a lot of fun watching these girls compete this post season.

“Special shout out to North Whidbey manager Shelly Ryder and Central Whidbey coaches Shawn Calkins, Bella Blazek, and Philip Brotemarkle for all their time and efforts for helping get this team ready for the post season.”

The Inferno host a combined South Skagit/Sedro-Woolley/Burlington team in a best-of-three showdown this weekend, with the winner advancing to the big dance.

All games are at Rhododendron Park in Coupeville, with Game 1 at 11 AM Saturday, June 26, and Game 2 at 3 PM the same day. The concession stand will be open.

If a winner-take-all Game 3 is necessary, it will be June 27.

The District 11 champ travels to Vancouver for the state tourney, which kicks off July 10.

They were a hit machine.

Getting base-knocks from the top of the order to the bottom of the lineup this season, the Central Whidbey Little League Juniors softball squad was a group of bash-happy young women.

And it served them well, as the Hammerheads finished 9-3 after sweeping a doubleheader Saturday from South Skagit.

The twin bill at Rhododendron Park was the regular-season finale, as Central Whidbey clinched the District 11 regular-season championship.

For some of the Hammerheads it was the end of the season, while others will join with players from Oak Harbor to form a Whidbey Island All-Stars squad which begins postseason play June 28.

As he basked in the afterglow of a doubleheader sweep and a successful season, CWLL coach Fred Farris reflected on the moment, while also looking ahead.

“Well, that’s a wrap,” he said. “All the girls contributed. So proud of this group and they’ll be fun to watch the next four years in high school!”

How Saturday played out:

Game 1:

Central Whidbey busted open a tie game, then went on to mercy-rule South Skagit 20-10.

The Hammerheads went with either feast or famine, scoring nine runs in the first, five in the third, and six to end the game in the bottom of the fifth.

In between, CWLL went scoreless in the second and fourth, yet had the visitors on the edge all game.

Savina Wells drew the start and prowled the pitcher’s circle like she owned the joint, whiffing eight batters en route to the win.

At the plate, the Hammerheads whacked 14 hits, with Jada Heaton bopping a double, Wells smacking a triple, and Mia Farris going big-time with not one, but two, resounding three-baggers.

Both of her triples came off of frozen ropes smoked to the opposite field gaps.

Game 2:

More of the same, as Central Whidbey racked up 13 hits and rolled to a 21-9 win which again was halted early thanks to the mercy rule.

This time out, it was all about the two-baggers, with five of those base-knocks being doubles.

Teagan Calkins and Katie Marti, who also “caught a solid two games,” each collected one of the extra-base hits, while Wells was liquid fire, rapping out three doubles as South Skagit had no answer for her electric bat.

Chloe Marzocca and Calkins combined to pitch the game, with Marzocca registering four K’s.

Teagan Calkins (5 runs, 2 hits, 4 RBI, 5 walks)

One of Coupeville’s best continues to kill it, halfway across the country.

Stella Johnson, who was a key player on a Central Whidbey Little League softball team which went to state in 2017, lives and plays in Danville, Kentucky these days.

A sophomore at Boyle County High School, she’s a vital part of a Rebels squad which just won a district championship, and now opens regionals this Saturday.

Johnson and Co. beat Garrard County 2-0 in the championship game of the District 45 tournament.

The Rebels, sitting at 24-6 on the season, open regional play against McCreary Central, needing three wins in as many days to clinch another title.

Johnson is in her second season on the Boyle County roster, having made her debut as an 8th grader.

Her hopes of being a five-year varsity high school player were snatched away, however, when the pandemic erased spring sports last year.

After scoring 16 runs and swiping three bases as an 8th grader for a team which advanced to state, Johnson has racked up 13 runs, six stolen bases, and three RBI in her second go-round for the Rebels.

Stella is the daughter of former Coupeville High School great Mimi Iverson, and is following in the athletic footsteps of older brother Elliott, who found success as a competitive bass fisher after the family’s move to Kentucky.

Little League picture day always brings out the best in players. (Photos by JohnsPhotos.net)

Give a little to get a lot.

When ever-wanderin’ photographer to the stars John Fisken snaps team pics, he always takes a couple of goofy ones in return for (hopefully) getting a straight one.

The glossy snaps seen above and below capture some of the many players who have suited up for Central Whidbey Little League softball and baseball teams this season.
